Comedy Roasts That Took It Too Far

25 May 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Saying the words "Friar's Club" without scaring away millennials who only speak in memes. Making the celeb in the chair feel honored, but just humbled enough to not jump out a window. Showcasing TV-friendly material that has enough foul language to make Quentin Tarantino blush: The comedic roast walks a whole lot of fine lines -- it's just part of the delicate mix of sick burns, underhanded compliments, and unthinkable vocabulary that makes up the cocktail. But sometimes when you shake that cocktail, it explodes right in your face. Pause to remember five roasts that did just that, and had viewers wincing between the laughs all the way.

Judd Apatow: 'Love' was made for the Netflix binge, and 'Girls' should be weekly

17 February 2016 7:10 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Yesterday, I published my review of Netflix's Love, one of my favorite new shows of the year so far. (Its first season debuts Friday.) A romantic comedy about a walking disaster of a woman (Gillian Jacobs) and the nice guy (Paul Rust) who falls for her, it was co-created by Rust, Lesley Arfin, and Judd Apatow, who between Freaks and Geeks, Girls, and his many movies (including Trainwreck, whose title he says he lifted from this project), has plenty of experience finding the most mortifying aspects of interpersonal relationships. At press tour last month, Apatow and I spoke about the Netflix experience and the many ways TV has changed since his days on Freaks and Geeks and The Larry Sanders Show, why he thinks comedy episodes shouldn't be limited to 30 minutes, how Jacobs (who had a recurring role on Girls last season) wound up in Love, and a lot more. »

E! Orders Two More Episodes of ‘Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry’

5 February 2016 11:09 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

E! has ordered two additional episodes of “Hollywood Medium With Tyler Henry,” bringing the first season to a total of 10 episodes, Variety has learned exclusively.

The extra order comes after ratings success for the reality series, which features Tyler Henry, the go-to medium to the stars, giving readings to celebrities. Snooki, Monica Potter and Tom Arnold have appeared on the show.

The second episode, which aired Jan. 31, brought in 1.8 million total viewers, delivering a 10% increase among viewers 18-49 from the Jan. 24 premiere, which marked E!’s largest non-spinoff unscripted launch in the past three years. Three airings of “Hollywood Medium” drew 3.2 million unique viewers on its Sunday night series debut.

Originally titled “Hollywood Teen Medium,” the show — which perhaps changed its title, now that Henry is 20 years old — was greenlit last July with an initial straight-to-series, eight-episode order. The series hails from 44 Blue Productions and Corbett-Stern Productions in association with Mortar Media. »
