Thora Birch fired from play; dad Jack Birch, porn actor with mom Carol Connors, allegedly threatened other actor

15 December 2010 6:50 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Four days before it was to open Off Broadway, "Dracula" has fired star Thora Birch (above, left), which was to be her New York stage debut. The New York Times reports the play's director, Paul Alexander, said it was because Thora's father Jack Birch threatened one of the other actors during a rehearsal.

Jack Birch and Thora's mother Carol Connors (above, right) were stars in pornographic movies in the 1970s. Connors is most well-known for "Deep Throat," a famous 1972 porn movie also starring Linda Lovelace.

Jack Birch has been Thora's manager for years and was frequently at the "Dracula" rehearsals without incident. But last Thursday night (Dec. 9) he confronted an actor who was rubbing Thora's back during a scene, which was part of his direction. The production claims Birch threatened the unnamed actor, but Birch says he was merely "trying to convey Thora's discomfort."

The production asked both Birchs to »

Interview: Oscar Winner Patty Duke On a Life in Duality

15 December 2010 10:14 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – In one of the most famous TV openings in the medium’s history, “identical cousins,” Patty and Cathy Lane, were introduced. Those two ends of one person were played by Patty Duke, a previous Oscar winner for “The Miracle Worker” and subsequent stellar acting career. Ironically, she also fought bipolar disorder.

Anna Marie Duke (her friends call her “Anna”) became Patty Duke after two unscrupulous show business managers took over her affairs and life when she was only eight years old. She went on to fame in the role of Helen Keller in the original 1959-61 Broadway run of “The Miracle Worker,” co-starring Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan. The film version (1962) garnered Duke the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, the youngest to ever win at the time at age 16.

I Love Lucy Costumes Popular Choice for TV Stars

1 November 2010 2:04 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

The classic sitcom starring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley may have ended some 50 years ago but I Love Lucy remains incredibly popular around the world. The characters have become recognizable icons. And, like Gilligan and the Skipper and Fred and Wilma, they're very popular choices on Halloween.

On Friday, Kathie Lee, Hoda, and Sara Haines dressed up as Lucy, Ricky and Ethel for NBC's Today Show. The ladies even got to recreate the famous wine-making scene (though Ethel was never actually in that scene).

Then, on Saturday, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin played Lucy and Ricky Ricardo at the Caaf Presents 17th Annual Dream Halloween party in Santa Monica, California. »

Blu-Ray Review: Amazing Release of ‘The Twilight Zone: Season 1’

14 September 2010 12:45 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Enter the middle ground between light and shadow with the amazing Blu-ray release of the first season of one of the best television programs of all time — “The Twilight Zone”.

Packed with remarkable special features that are all perfectly shaped around a show that has lost absolutely none of its power despite the decades since its original airing and the myriad of programs that it inspired, “The Twilight Zone: Season 1” is the best TV-on-bd release of the year to date.

Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

My personal adoration for Rod Serling’s landmark creation is hard to overstate. There was a time when I always had an episode in my DVR from one of its cable airings just in case the mood struck me right or I stumbled upon an episode I actually hadn’t seen. The program helped shape the way I look at science fiction and I believe I »

I Love Lucy: Desi Arnaz's Kids Keep Legacy Alive Through Babalu Musical

13 September 2010 3:59 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Desi Arnaz was the pioneer of many things, both musically and in television, so to have a musical honoring his contributions to music is really long overdue. While many celebrate the life of his first wife, Lucille Ball, it usually stops there. But the business that made her among the most recognizable of television stars was largely orchestrated by Arnaz. Their children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr., have now put together a musical honoring the best of his music, naming it after one of their father's most famous songs, Babalu.

Arnaz's family fled from Cuba to Miami, Florida, when he was just a boy, and he turned to show business as a means of supporting himself. He played guitar and appeared in Broadway musicals and movies, meeting Ball shortly after arriving in Hollywood. After serving in the Army, he formed another orchestra. According to daughter Lucie, »

Simon Amstell, Larry David and the rise of the 'sim-com'

29 August 2010 1:30 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

From Simon Amstell to Steve Coogan to Trinny and Susannah, today's stars simply play exaggerated versions of themselves. Does it count as acting? Mark Lawson on the 'sim-com'

There are stories of particularly intense actors who, in the interests of remaining in character, insist on being addressed on set only by the names of the person they are playing.

There's no risk of such pretension, though, on the set of Grandma's House, the BBC2 sitcom in which Simon Amstell portrays the TV presenter Simon Amstell. Or during filming of Trinny and Susannah: What They Did Next, an online mockumentary purporting to depict the daily lives of the fashion presenters. Or in the shooting of The Trip, a forthcoming TV comedy in which the names of both the actors and the characters are Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, supposedly touring Britain reviewing restaurants for the Observer.

[TV] The Mothers-in-Law: The Complete Series

25 August 2010 8:27 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

The Mother’s In Law was produced by Desi Arnaz and lasted for 2 seasons and 56 episodes from 1967-69. Arnaz brought in writers from I Love Lucy for this series, Madelyn Davis and Bob Carroll, Jr., as evidenced by the feel good slapstick comedy that’s present throughout. The Hubbards and the Buells are next door neighbors who consistently annoy one another, and whose lives change forever when their children suddenly get engaged. Eve Arden (recognized as the principal of Rydell High in Grease) plays Eve Hubbard, the sophisticated, proper wife of Herbert Hubbard, a lawyer. They clash with Roy and Kay Buell. Roy is a television writer and Kay is an outspoken Italian woman.

Although Kaye and Eve are quite different, and their husbands are as well, the comedy of the series comes from the four of them being placed in similar situations and in actuality, acting quite similar to one another. »

Ball's Daughter Reaches Deal With Auction House

18 July 2010 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A California auction house selling Lucille Ball memorabilia has reached a deal to return the late acting legend's lifetime achievement awards to her daughter.

Ball's daughter with first husband Desi Arnaz, Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill, was left items including love letters, a Rolls Royce and trophies from the star's acting career in her mum's will when the comedienne died in 1989.

However, the widow of Ball's second husband, Susie Morton, claimed Luckinbill failed to collect the items following Ball's passing, and planned to sell them off at Heritage Auction Galleries over the weekend (17-18Jul10).

Luckinbill threatened to take legal action over the auction of her late mother's personal items because it "insults her memory".

Auction bosses stepped in, and agreed on Saturday to return the awards to Luckinbill, but the other items remained in the sale.

Luckinbill plans to display the trophies in a museum honouring her mother, reports the Associated Press. »
