La Barbe’S Open Letter On Women & Cannes

18 May 2012 9:31 AM, PDT | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

The French feminist collective known as La Barbe (French for “The Beard”) printed an open letter in France’s daily newspaper Le Monde earlier this week addressing the complete absence of films directed by women in the Competition section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. La Barbe is made up of actress Fanny Cottençon, writer/director Virginie Despentes and director Coline Serreau, who have also set up an online petition which has been signed by numerous luminaries, including feminist icon Gloria Steinem and filmmakers such as Ry Russo-Young, Gillian Armstrong and Ava DuVernay.

The British newspaper The Guardian ran a translation of the open letter, which reads as follows:

“What has changed in cinema? Everything has changed!” exclaimed Gilles Jacob, president of the Cannes film festival, during the presentation of the 65th Cannes festival film nominations. Everything?! For one second, we trembled. But for no reason, it turned out, »

Where Are The Female Filmmakers At Cannes?

18 May 2012 12:05 AM, PDT | FilmInk.com.au | See recent FilmInk.com.au news »

This year's Cannes competition line-up has unsurprisingly proven to be another testosterone-driven affair, with not a single female director in the running for the Palme d'Or. Not content to sit back and accept this as the way things simply roll at Cannes, a growing chorus of critics - including acclaimed Australian director Gillian Armstrong - have joined forces to protest this year's line-up. »

Gillian Armstrong backs campaign for transparency in Cannes selection criteria

17 May 2012 10:31 PM, PDT | Encore Magazine | See recent Encore Magazine news »

A group of Australia’s top film-makers have joined international counterparts in asking where all the women are in the Cannes Film Festival selection.

After not one film by a female director was selected at the Cannes Film Festival, film-maker Gillian Armstrong, along with other film-makers from Australia and around the world have ask the festival to reveal its selection criteria.

Led by Melissa Silverstein, founder of the Women and Hollywood blog on the Indiewire Network the campaign asks for transparency from the festival.

Silverstein said: “While the typical Cannes stories focus on the glamour, clothes and celebrities on the red carpet, this year many articles are focused on whether the festival is sexist. The fact that the festival’s director, Thierry Fremaux, as well as the jury had to address this issue at the opening is a big deal.”

Cannes 2012: 700 Protesters Sign Petition Demanding More Women Directors

16 May 2012 3:50 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

A growing chorus of critics is attacking the Cannes Film Festival for this year's all-male competition lineup of directors. On May 16, a group of 250 people including producer Darla K. Anderson (Toy Story 3), director Gillian Armstrong, actress-director Rachel Ward and feminist icon Gloria Steinem signed a petition sent to Cannes officials, headlined, "Where Are the Women Directors?" By May 17, the petition on Change.org had about 700 signatories. The effort is the brainchild of Melissa Silverstein, founder of a blog called Women and Hollywood and co-founder of New York's Athena Film Festival. Photos: Cannes Film Festival:

On The Rise 2012: 10 Directors Who Look To Be Bright Sparks Of The Future

15 May 2012 11:33 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.

So, hot on the heels of our On The Rise pieces focusing on actors, actresses and screenwriters, we've picked out ten directors who've arrived in a big way in the last year or so, and look set for even greater things in the near future. Any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments section below. »

Kirsten Dunst On The Road Poster

20 April 2012 4:36 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Kirsten Dunst/Camille On the Road poster If this isn't an all-out smile, I don't know what is. Those sparkling white teeth and healthy-looking gums belong to Kirsten Dunst. What a world! What a life! What a dentist!. I'm assuming Dunst's is the last On the Road "character" poster we're adding, as every major On the Road character has already gotten his/her poster. Dunst's actually came out before the ones for the film's three leads, Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, and Kristen Stewart. We're just late posting it. In On the Road, Dunst plays Camille, the wife of Dean Moriarty (Hedlund), who leaves her behind to go on the road with the much younger Marylou (Stewart). Camille is based on Carolyn Cassady, the first wife of the sexually adventurous Neal Cassady (Moriarty in the novel/film). Sissy Spacek played Carolyn Cassady in John Byrum's Heart Beat, based on Cassady's 1976 book of memoirs, »

9 February 2012 7:51 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Annette Benning is set to star in Gillian Armstrong’s "The Great", an irreverent comedy inspired by the life of 18th century Russian empress Catherine The Great for Macgowan Films and Lago Films reports Screen Daily.

The most renowned and the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, Catherine II ruled during the second half of the 18th century and revitalised the country into one of the great powers of Europe. Much like with Elizabeth I in the UK, Catherine's reign is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and the Russian nobility.

Marian Macgowan and Marco Mehlitz are producing from a script by Tony McNamara. Shooting kicks off in September. »

Annette Bening To Star In Gillian Armstrong Comedy 'The Great,' Inspired By Life of Catherine The Great

9 February 2012 8:20 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Annette Bening has never been the most prolific of actresses. Whenever she's appeared in the last decade or so, she's tended to make a splash, but she's rarely made more than one film every couple of years, preferring, totally understandably, to focus instead on raising her children with Warren Beatty. But her Oscar-nominated turn in "The Kids Are All Right" seems to have revived her interest in acting: she's got as many as four films on the way, including "Imogene," "He Loves Me," "Bomb" and Beatty's gestating Howard Hughes picture. And she's just added one more to her dance card. Screen Daily reports that Bening will star in "The Great," a comedy from Australian filmmaker Gillian Armstrong, the director of "My Brilliant Career," "Little Women," "Oscar & Lucinda" and "Charlotte Gray," among others. The film, set up at British company Bankside Films »
