Gillian Armstrong was born on December 18, 1950 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia as Gillian May Armstrong. She is a director and producer, known for Little Women (1994), Oscar and Lucinda (1997) and Charlotte Gray (2001). She is married to John Pleffer. They have two children.

She was a part of the movement dubbed the "Australian New Wave" by the press. They were a group of filmmakers and performers who emerged from Down Under at about the same time in the early 1980's and found work in other parts of the world. Other members included actors Mel Gibson and Judy Davis and directors George Miller and Peter Weir.
She was awarded the A.M. (Member of the Order of Australia) in the 1984 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to the film industry.
Gave birth to her 1st child, a daughter Billie Armstrong, with her husband John Pleffer.
Gave birth to her 2nd child, a daughter, with her husband John Pleffer.
Directed one Oscar nominated performance: Winona Ryder in Little Women (1994).
