Snooki, Michele Bachmann top 'Bad Science List'

28 December 2011 10:46 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The Sense About Science (Sas) campaign has named Jersey Shore doctor of grain liquor Snooki and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann as two of 2011′s worst offenders of Bad Science. Bachmann went on TV to tell a story of a Tampa woman who claimed her daughter had become “mentally retarded” from an Hpv vaccine, and Snooki — well, Snooki’s sort of a science experiment gone wrong in so many (and some delightful) ways that I’d like to give her scientific claim its own paragraph. Let it breathe a little, like seamen amidst a gust of sea air.

After all the excitement, suspense and music of "The X Factor," there could only be one winner. And it was 19-year-old Melanie Amaro who took home the $5 million prize. The finale was very much a celebration of how far everyone had come since the singing competition began many months ago. Following the show, the contestants and mentors took a moment to talk about what they've learned and what their future holds now that the season is over.

Here's the best of what they had to say...

Simon Cowell on the moment he brought Melanie Amaro back to the competition: "It was like a marriage proposal. I said to her, 'I've made a mistake, I admit it. I'm going to give you a second chance.' And I stood there like a lemon for 30 seconds while she stared at me. And then quietly [she] said, 'Yes. I'll do it.'...All I »

‘X Factor’ Finale: Paula Abdul V. Nicole Scherzinger, Which Dress Was Best?

23 December 2011 8:18 AM, PST | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

While both stars opted for glam gowns for the finale, they went for two totally different looks -- and which one did you like best? While some of my coworkers can't stop gushing about what's going on on stage during X Factor, I found myself more interested in the dueling dressing between Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger! The finale episode on Dec. 22 was no exception, where both stars turned up all dressed up in gowns. While Nicole opted for a shimmering silver number, Paula opted for a super sexy (and very colorful) gown. Nicole's silver beaded Pamella Roland column gown was definitely show-stopping, but the silhouette also gave Nicole such a sophisticated vibe -- I definitely prefer to see her looking sexy and chic compared to some of her revealing looks! As for Paula -- oh, Paula! What was she thinking? The bright orange and hot pink gown paired with »

Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), the self-centered and hilarious fictional star of "Tgs With Tracy Jordan" on "30 Rock" would be the perfect reality competition judge. So fittingly, "30 Rock" is putting her on a fake reality show, "America's Kidz Got Singing."

Jenna, along with "Queen of Jordan" star D'fwan and John McEnroe, will judge the kids singing competition on the "30 Rock " Season 6 premiere (Jan. 12, 8 p.m. Est on NBC).

"You're weird looking, Liddy," Jenna tells the young contestant. "Even if you could sing, with that face, it would be like eating a steak that just came out of a dumpster."

Oh, Jenna. She's kind of like Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul rolled into one.

Also on tap for "30 Rock" Season 6: a new boyfriend -- played by James Marsden -- for Liz Lemon, plus Kelsey Grammer, Denise Richards and Kristen Schaal.

'X Factor' Season 1: What worked, what didn't

22 December 2011 7:00 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"The X Factor" just wrapped its first season and we know it's coming back next fall. So we have a few cheers and a few jeers about what the show did well and what the show needs to improve upon for next year.

What Worked

Hollywood Week

Actually pre-setting the groups and giving them vocal and dancing coaches was a stroke of genius. The Hollywood Week of "Idol" may be kind of fun because it's a hot mess, but honestly, we actually liked seeing the groups do well and make the eliminations hard on the judges. -- Andrea Reiher

Allowing Original Performances

Too often singing competitions turn into karaoke competitions with better backing tracks. But what made "The X Factor" interesting were the periodic original songs -- specifically those by Brian "Astro" Bradley and Chris Rene. They broke up the predictability of the show and also demonstrated that contestants have real creative talent, »

Elijah Wood: 'I was thrilled to play Frodo Baggins in The Hobbit'

22 December 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Since Lord of the Rings, the actor has avoided big-budget epics. But now he's reprising his hobbit role and starring in a lavish Treasure Island adaptation

Is that the Ring? Around the ring finger of Elijah Wood's right hand is a band of silver with strange lettering on it – probably Elvish. As a reward for his lead hobbiting services in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson reportedly gave Wood the original Ring. And he still wears it. Doesn't he?

"No. This is Hebrew, " he says, twirling the ring around his finger. "I know, it has a kind of a similar look to it."

Oh.

"I do have the Ring, but it's not inscribed, and it's gold. But I don't think it's real gold – gold-plated. But, no, I don't wear it. I keep it in a little box." Not on a chain around his neck? "I carried it for a long time, »

Who'll Get The Last Laugh?

22 December 2011 3:08 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The first night of "The X Factor" finale featured a duets competition that paired Josh Krajcik with Alanis Morisette, Chris Rene with Avril Lavigne and Melanie Amaro with R. Kelly.

Backstage, "Good Day La" (weekdays, 9Am Pst on Fox) talked to Kelly, who reflected on his performance. "Even when I was doing it in the studios, it was very challenging for me. It takes a lot of courage to get up there and do it," he said. And while Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger loved the performance, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul, who Simon referred to as "Grumpy and Dumpy," both had issues with Amaro's inability to shine next to Kelly.

Rene's duet with Avril Lavigne was special for her, since Rene's mentor, L.A. Reid, signed her to her first record deal. "To be out there, performing in front of him, it was awesome!" she gushed.

Photos: 'The X-Factor' Has Emotional Last Night

22 December 2011 11:26 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Nicole Scherzinger has collapsed into a fit of tears, Rachel Crowe has fallen dramatically to the floor, and even Simon Cowell has shown his softer side. Still, the winner of "The X-Factor" -- and a 5 million-dollar recording contract -- is yet to be determined.

The actual performances of the final three were not quite as interesting to viewers as the sad and inspiring life stories Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene, and Melanie Amaro continue to draw out. So despite Josh's nervous performance of "Uninvited" with Alanis Morissette, Chris's cringe-inducing duet with Avril Lavigne of her song "Complicated," and Melanie's rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" -- which needed more emotion, according to Paula Abdul -- the winner will likely be who everyone likes the best. Or feels the most sorry for, at least.
