Consider my ticket bought. Variety reports that Phase 4 Films have acquired U.S. distribution rights to Electrick Children, the debut feature from writer-director Rebecca Thomas. The movie stars Julia Garner as a 15-year-old girl brought up in a conservative Mormon family deep in the heart of Utah. Three months after hearing rock music for the first time through a forbidden cassette tape, she ends up pregnant and tells everyone that it’s an immaculate conception brought on by the music; she then runs away from her family, to Las Vegas, to search for the source of the rock music. Rory Culkin, Liam Aiken, and Billy Zane (yes) co-star, and Electrick Children will be released simultaneously in theaters and on VOD sometime later this year.
Having heard nothing about Electrick Children before, I searched out the trailer in order to better understand the movie Phase 4 picked up, and… wow. It looks, »

For someone who's considered one of the greatest filmmakers in history, Sergio Leone was not especially prolific. While he worked extensively as an assistant director (with credits including "Bicycle Thieves," "Quo Vadis" and "Ben Hur"), he was only credited on seven films across his thirty-year career (with uncredited direction work on three others -- "The Last Days Of Pompeii," "My Name Is Nobody" and "A Genius, Two Partners and A Dupe").
But given that those films include some of the greatest Westerns -- the Man With No Name trilogy, and "Once Upon A Time In The West" -- and a wonderful crime epic, "Once Upon A Time In America," it's hard not to mourn that we didn't get more films from the director, who passed away 23 years ago today, on April 30th, 1989. But it wasn't for a lack of trying, as there were a number of other projects that Leone considered, »

The Paperboy, the forthcoming adaptation of Pete Dexter’s 1995 novel, has just had its pre-release buzz jumpstarted by a slew of new photos. A few months back, the poster was released to the delight of many a crime-film and ’60s film poster enthusiast. These new pictures give us looks at more of the cast which includes Zac Efron, John Cusack, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, and David Oyelowo.
A star-studded cast is attractive enough, but the more I read about the story, the more highly intrigued I get. Efron’s character, Jack, is a lowly paperboy, while his brother Ward (McConaughey) and Ward’s partner Yardley (Oyelowo) are up-and-coming investigative journalists. Jack aids them in a story that helps free a man wrongly accused of murder (Cusack), but this silver lining has an extremely dark cloud. The setting of hot and steamy Florida sounds perfect for this tale of injustice, pride, »

So how did you honor the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking? Did you refrain from Titanic 3-D jokes for 24 hours? Maybe sport your ‘I Heart Titanic’ tank top for a day? What you probably didn’t do, unless you’re this person, is place binoculars at the grave of the Titanic’s lookout along with a note saying “Sorry these were late”: Love the unintentional Ghostbusters 2 ‘Titanic – better late than never’ reference, but this seems just a tad on the unnecessary side. Unless the real-life Frederick Fleet was the Billy Zane character (or knew the Billy Zane Character or was ever anywhere near him), in which case, peeing might even be in the cards. Also, no disrespect, Mr. Fleet, but are you sure you want “Titanic Lookout” prominently displayed on your grave? Maybe keep it as just, “Boat Enthusiast”? (Pics via Splash News) »

There’s truly no place quite like Hollywood. For the third straight year, the TCM Classic Film Festival was staged in the historic center of the world’s film industry. The event once again united a great community of film fans. The 2012 event celebrated style in the movies, from fashion to architecture and everything in between and lined up great films, terrific guests and many special events.
There were so many classic films to choose from over the 4-day festival, it was nearly impossible to decide what to see! Here are a few of my favorites from the weekend.
Auntie Mame (1958) .
Fantastically restored, and screened at the legendary Egyptian Theater, this Rosalind Russell classic was easily a fan fave at the festival. Even at 9am on a Saturday morning, the house was packed. The screening was hosted by two-time Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Scholar Cari Beauchamp, »

Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Titanic Box Office: Guy Pearce / Maggie Grace's Lockout Bombs, Julia Roberts / Lily Collins / Armie Hammer's Mirror Mirror Resilient The Titanic 3D rerelease hasn't broken any box-office records in North America, where it has taken in an estimated $44.41 million after 12 days. Overseas, however, it's another story. This weekend (which includes Wed./Thu. in some territories), Titanic 3D topped the international box office, collecting an estimated $98.9 million at 9,889 theaters in 69 territories (representing more than 100 countries), according to Box Office Mojo. In China alone, James Cameron disaster / romantic epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and veteran Gloria Stuart drew $67 million, an official record for that country (not adjusted for inflation / currency fluctuations). For comparison's sake: several years before China became a box-office powerhouse for Hollywood movies — one likely to surpass the United States in the not-too-distant future — Titanic earned $43.92 million during its initial run in that country. »

Not since James Cameron's "Avatar" has a movie been No. 1 for fourth consecutive weekends. That is, until, "The Hunger Games."
Moe, Larry, and Curly were beaten to a pulp, and Joss Whedon's "The Cabin in the Woods" was ultimately scared to the No. 3 position by the phenomenon known as "The Hunger Games."
Based on Suzanne Collins' young-adult novel, "The Hunger Games" stayed at No. 1 with $21.5 million. So far, the film has accumulated $337.1 million at the domestic box office and has earned $531.1 million worldwide!
Meanwhile, the re-imagined "The Three Stooges" from the Farrelly brothers, debuted at No. 2. Starring Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso as Moe, Larry and Curly, "The Three Stooges" nyuked nyuked its way to No. 2 with $17.1 million.
At No. 3 was the fantastic horror film "The Cabin in the Woods" from producer/co-writer Joss Whedon and his partner-in-crime, Drew Goddard. The R-rated film, also from »

Good evening America. It has recently come to my attention that I enjoy the nein•a•dees. I came upon this realization on Saturday whilst watching Titanic (1997) starring Billy Zane, The Unsinkable Annie Wilkes... and Suzy Amis. After removing my misty used 3D glasses sponsored by The Lion King, I gazed wistfully at photos of blk dnm's "leather jacket 8" modelled by Juliette Lewis and Chloe Sevigny. In two dimensions.
Later indulging in buttery spaetzle, courtesy of Hallo Berlin and nein-a-dees university mates, we considered trapeze lessons and discussed the puzzling career of Mira Sorvino before spotting Primal Fear's Edward Norton in the 10th row at "The Lady From Dubuque" starring four time Oscar nominee Jane Alexander. She twirled her angelic shawl with all the grace befitting an Albee abstraction. Or Stevie Nicks at a Fleetwood Mac reunion tour.

A Night to Remember
Written by Eric Ambler
Directed by Roy Ward Baker
UK, 1958
Marking the 100th anniversary of the disaster, the two most famous films about the Titanic sinking have received the restoration and re-release treatment, albeit one of them on a much grander scale. The 1958 British production A Night to Remember, from director Roy Ward Baker, has been given a new digital restoration, receiving blu-ray treatment in North America courtesy of The Criterion Collection and a limited theatrical run in select cities in the United Kingdom. James Cameron’s Titanic, meanwhile, has been converted into 3D for a worldwide re-release. This revival of the world’s previous highest grossing film allows for re-evaluation on the part of its critics, re-familiarisation for its fans, and a chance for those who missed it on the big screen the first time round, like this writer, »

Everyone knows that not paying taxes can become a celebrity’s legacy. (Go with me on this.) When someone mentions Willie Nelson or Wesley Snipes, if you don’t automatically make a joke about weed or Passenger 57, the next easy go-to in your bag of Nelson-Snipes jokes is totally about tax evasion, I just know it. But stars who don’t abide by the tax code are such a common thing that it’s not that shocking anymore once you hear who’s been in hot water for it. Martha Stewart. Snoop Dogg. Val Kilmer. Teri Polo! Clearly she wasn’t reporting her income from being a Miss America judge. So sure, lots of celebs get in trouble for it, but haven’t we all wondered who the sexiest tax evaders are? We sure have: 12. Burt Reynolds This centerfold was no angel (see what I did there?), Burt »

A few quick mid-week updates.
Eric Stoltz directed tonight's episode of Glee, "Big Brother," which airs at 8 pm on Fox. His next episode will be 3x19, "Prom-a-Saurus," which airs next month.
He also wrote a guest column in this week's Entertainment Weekly. Snippet:
When I first came to the Glee set last season, I could tell they’d been through a great deal - the actors were close-knit and a bit guarded, and rightly so. Who was this redheaded stranger coming into their world, asking questions and taking notes? Before I started directing a show, I try to spend a few weeks hanging around the set, getting to know the crew and talking to the actors about how they like to work. Who is fussy? Who is left-handed? Who wants to go home early, and who is the perfectionist? There is no “right” way to work, and familiarizing myself with »

While Shannon Elizabeth was back on the big screen last weekend in "American Reunion," reprising the role of Nadia that made her famous, an entirely different side of the actress will be on display in the upcoming biopic "A Green Story."
Joining Elizabeth are Ed O’Ross, Annabella Sciorra, George Finn, Malcolm McDowell, Billy Zane, Louis Mandylor, Debbie Matenopoulos and Alessandra Toressani in the film that tells the true story Van Vlahakis, a Greek immigrant who arrived in America with only $22 in his pocket and eventually founded the multi-million dollar green company, Earth Friendly Products. The trailer for the film which is unveiled below provides an interesting mix of true-life biopic and the quest for the American Dream. The film was shot on location in both Los Angeles and Greece, and certainly provides a bit of a different story to what is currently in the news about the state of Greek economy and politics. »

To spend so many years of your life not knowing about the Titanic until the director of True Lies tells you about it is almost as tragic as the event itself. But there’s no one that doesn’t know about the sinking of the Titanic, right? Right? In usual Internet and Twitter fashion, the impossible has been proven not-at-all-impossible. Kids and teens across the nation, a.k.a. these 12 concerned Twitterers, are currently in a state of shock and terror because 100-year-old news doesn’t travel fast enough. Not only are these fine citizens worried if people actually died, but more importantly if dear Jack made it or if Billy Zane got his comeuppance. Nikki Finke’s insiders estimate it’ll take ten years for them to figure out both Jack and Billy Zane weren’t even real people. Expect more #mindblown tweets that day. James Cameron’s Titanic is one of the most successful movies of all time, and I have no problem saying that it’s also one of the most beloved movies ever made. (We’re now in the era when success doesn’t always hinge on deep fan love; witness The Phantom Menace, the Transformers films, or Khloe Kardashian.) Where Titanic may well be unique in the history of cinema is that it is also, arguably, the most hated beloved movie ever made. Any number of celebrated films, of course, have provoked backlashes. Just think of the strain of carping snootiness that has always gathered, »

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Passes $300m? Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $21.5 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. That's quite a bit lower than the $25 million some had been expecting as late as Friday evening, or the near-$30 million predicted by Box Office Mojo a few days ago. If those estimates are correct, Universal will surely claim that American Reunion easily surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. In 2012 dollars, however, American Pie would have earned approximately $29 million. And what that means is: many more tickets were sold for American Pie than for American Reunion. Also, remember that American Reunion cost a »
