Fall 2016’s Most Anticipated Films

16 hours ago | | See recent news »

So many goodies in the cinemas candy store this upcoming Awards Season! Oh,boy, oh boy.

It’s “Good Movie Season” when we get Hollywood heavy-hitters (both top popcorn entertainment and Oscar wannabees), and the best of the film festival circuit, most recently from Toronto. Many films will have an awards qualifying run in 2016 and open officially in 2017.

While we have not seen some of these (although we have seen some trailers), some movies are sure to disappoint. That said, here is Wamg’s list of highly-anticipated films, both big blockbuster entertainment and seriously meaty cinema.

Let's Talk About How Ridiculously Cute Justin Timberlake Looks at the Latest Trolls Premiere

17 hours ago | | See recent Popsugar news »

Justin Timberlake has been zigzagging the globe to promote the new DreamWorks animated film Trolls, and he hit the rainbow carpet for a premiere of the flick in La on Sunday. The singer, who provides his voice for the movie, looked devastatingly handsome as he posed for photos, took video of fans on his phone, and linked up with costars Anna Kendrick, James Corden, and Zooey Deschanel. Between his press rounds for Trolls, Justin has also been filming an untitled Woody Allen movie with Kate Winslet and Juno Temple; we've gotten a glimpse of his character in full '50s-style getups (including an old-timey lifeguard uniform) and shooting an intense scene with Kate at Coney Island in NYC. He also celebrated his fourth wedding anniversary with wife Jessica Biel after making their first joint appearance together in months. »

Relief for Lead Actress Rivals as Viola Davis Goes Supporting for ‘Fences’

24 October 2016 5:30 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It hasn’t just been Oscar-watchers on the sidelines paying close attention to the campaign details of Viola Davis’ “Fences” performance this season. Rival campaigns have had their eyes glued to the scenario as well.

The lead actress contest is incredibly competitive with performances from Emma Stone (“La La Land”), Natalie Portman (“Jackie”) and Annette Bening (“20th Century Women”) considered top-tier players, and everyone from established perennial Oscar favorites (Meryl Streep in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” Amy Adams in “Arrival”) to impressive newcomers (Ruth Negga in “Loving”) clamoring for a seat before the music stops.

Any of the campaigns behind those contenders would be eager to see Davis, who won the lead actress Tony for the play’s revival six years ago, vacate the category. They got their wish over the weekend.

After finally seeing the film herself last week, Davis felt her performance as Rose Maxson was a supporting one, »

Arthouse Audit: ‘Moonlight’ Soars to Near-Record Levels; ‘The Handmaiden’ Beats the Odds

23 October 2016 11:05 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The slumbering specialized world woke up this weekend.

Critically acclaimed “Moonlight” (A24) pulled a sensational response far beyond its already high expectations. But it wasn’t the only positive story: “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) beat the odds against subtitled films. And Michael Moore’s election special “Trumpland” (Dog Eat Dog) scored strong numbers in theaters along with its iTunes debut.

Moonlight” (A24) – Metacritic: 99; Festivals include: Telluride, Toronto, New York 2016

$413,175 in 4 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $103,685

In a lackluster year at the specialty box office, even a $30,000 initial platform per theater average for Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” would have looked great. Instead, with a rare 99 Metacritic score, ahead of any other film this year, the opening PTA of $103,685 is sky high and among the top initial results ever.

How good is it? It is second only to “The Revenant” (which opened on Christmas weekend) among releases over the last two years. »

The Hollywood Reporter

“There’s this theme of faith, family and forgiveness in all of them,” Tyler Perry, the actor and director who is the most commercially successful black filmmaker in history, says of his nine Madea films as we sit down to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. No, the 47-year-old never has been the subject of much awards chatter — and won’t be for his latest installment, Boo! A Madea Halloween, which opened nationwide on Friday — but he has as loyal a following as any filmmaker working today, and that makes him interesting nonetheless. “I don’t want to just do movies to do movies,” he continues. “I’d like to leave people with something that would lift them in some way or another, that makes them laugh and encourages them in some way or another. »

“I think anybody who sees this movie cannot fail to be deeply affected by it,” says actressNaomie Harris in reference to Moonlight — the new film, in theaters Oct. 21, for which she is a frontrunner to win the best supporting actress Oscar — as we sit down to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. In Barry Jenkins‘ low-budget indie drama, the stunning 40-year-old Brit, heretofore best known for her work in two Pirates of the Caribbean and two James Bond blockbusters, plays the crack-addicted mother of a young gay boy over the course of 20 tumultuous years. Justin Timberlake Films His New Movie the Day Before Celebrating His Wedding Anniversary

19 October 2016 7:33 AM, PDT | | See recent Popsugar news »

Justin Timberlake has been hard at work on the set of a new Woody Allen project in NYC for the last few weeks, where he's been spotted filming a scene as a lifeguard (in an amazing, old-timey bathing suit) and having a heated argument with costar Kate Winslet. The film is reportedly a romantic drama set in the 1950s, which accounts for all of the vintage ensembles he's been sporting lately. His Tuesday filming session with Kate and actress Juno Temple was no different. The actor, who celebrates his fourth wedding anniversary with wife Jessica Biel on Wednesday, looked like he'd stepped straight out of a time machine as he shot some scenes while rocking high-waisted khakis and a white polo. If anything, this only proves that Jt would look damn good in any era. Related:Jessica Biel "Scrabblebrags" During a Game Night With Justin Timberlake »

“I’m excited about this opportunity in my career to really grow and almost get my second wind,” the actor Mahershala Ali tells me as we sit down at the Empire Hotel in New York to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. Ali is in town for the U.S. premiere of Barry Jenkins‘ indie drama Moonlight, in which he plays a drug dealer who becomes something of a father figure to a sexually conflicted young boy, and for which Ali — a 42-year-old heretofore best known for playing the slick political operative Remy Danton on Netflix’s House of Cards — already has received some of the best reviews of his career. “I’m so appreciative that people have begun to recognize my work in a way where it can afford me more opportunities, »

Arthouse Audit: ‘Shin Godzilla’ Stomps Delicate Indies ‘Certain Women’ and ‘Christine’

16 October 2016 11:29 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The traditional fall season of award-season releases gets a late start on Friday with “Moonlight” (A24) and “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) leading the way. It can’t come a moment too soon.

This weekend, top-quality films “Certain Women” (IFC), “Christine” (The Orchard), “Miss Hokusai” (Gkids) and “Aquarius” (Vitagraph) competed in limited openings. All nabbed good or better reviews. But none scored at the level likely to lead to the sort of wider response and multi-million grosses that normally come along regularly at this time of year.

The weakness can be seen among later-week grosses as films expand. There hasn’t been a breakout crossover release of any significance since “Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate), which is still grossing better than most recent releases.

Shin Godzilla” (Funimation) showed strength with a midweek opening in a mixed plan of bookings. Similar to “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” (Abramorama), out-of- the-box distribution seems to be finding positive results. »

Love, Time And Death Are Woven Through First Poster For Collateral Beauty

13 October 2016 12:43 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

When asked to adequately sum up Collateral Beauty in a single sentence, director David Frankel (Dear Diary, The Devil Wears Prada) referred to his starry Oscar contender as a “screwball drama.” Upon viewing last month’s poignant first teaser, it’s not too difficult to see why. Two months out from release and we now have the first theatrical poster to pour over, teasing the ways in which we are all connected.

So, what’s the pitch? Well, Frankel’s picture places Will Smith in the shoes of Howard Inlet, a high-flying New York advertising executive circling the jaws of depression following the sudden death of his young daughter. Crushed, Howard comes dangerously close to losing the will to live, retreating into grief as his home and work life spiral out of control. His co-workers Claire (Kate Winslet), Simon (Michael Pena) and Whit (Edward Norton) quickly draft up a plan »

Collateral Beauty Poster: Will Smith Connects with Love, Time and Death

13 October 2016 11:19 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When Will Smith opened Seven Pounds way back in 2008, he declined to discuss the plot beforehand, believing his sheer star power was enough to open a mysterious movie on. The actor is back up to his old tricks with the similarly themed Collateral Beauty, which tackles a lot of the same ideas as that previous drama about the power of redemption. Today, we have a new poster for Collateral Beauty. It doesn't really tell us much, except that Will Smith has surrounded himself with some outstanding co-stars.

The new Collateral Beauty one-sheet carries the tagline 'We're All Connected'. And it unites Will Smith with an award-winning ensemble cast. Included are Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Pe&#241a, Naomie Harris,&#160Jacob Latimore, Kate Winslet, and Helen Mirren. Positioned to debut on December 16, the movie is sitting smack-dab in prime Oscar real estate.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind: TV series in development

Chris Longo Oct 12, 2016

Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is being remade for TV...

Sometimes when you beg to Hollywood, “please, let me keep this memory,” they go right ahead and zap it from your brain anyway. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen with Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, the 2004 cult hit, and latest victim of television’s reboot era.

The Oscar-winning best screenplay from Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth is being adapted for the small screen by Anonymous Content, according to an exclusive report from THR. Steve Golin, one of the original producers, is spearheading the project, and Zev Borow (Forever, Chuck) is in talks to write the script.

The film centers around Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet), former lovers who both undergo a memory cleanse of their turbulent, imperfect two-year relationship. Winslet earned an Oscar-nomination for »

‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ TV Show: 5 Ways to Make It Work

10 October 2016 1:20 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

A lot of things were lost in the shuffle when those Trump tapes hit the internet on Friday afternoon, but one of them was a story that would undoubtedly have made bigger waves in the film community if not for the unfortunate timing of its announcement: “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is being turned into a television show. That’s right, Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman’s wickedly creative and widely beloved modern classic is being developed for the small screen, and — unsurprisingly — neither of them will be involved in this new take on their high-concept romantic drama. In fact, very little is known about the project, which will be produced by Anonymous Content and written by “Chuck” scribe Zev Borow.

Needless to say, we’re a bit trepidatious about the whole idea — it worked out well for “Fargo” (and potentially “Westworld”), but not every movie can be so easily distilled, »

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind To Be Repackaged For Television

10 October 2016 10:07 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindMichel Gondry’s oddball 2004 favorite, is the latest feature film in line to be repackaged for the small-screen, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Anonymous Content, the production house behind such bankable hits as Mr. Robot and the dormant True Detective, is developing the TV spinoff series, enlisting a helping hand in Steve Golin – producer on the original genre mash-up – to help oversee production. It’s early doors on this one, according to THR, though we understand screenwriter Zev Borow (Forever, Chuck) has opened negotiations to ink the script. Exactly who Anonymous and Universal Cable Productions plan to cast as estranged couple Joel and Clementine – originally portrayed by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, respectively – is up for question,

Established IP continues to be fertile ground for broadcast and streaming outlets, and one need only look toward the stacked TV lineup going into the fall season »
