Power Women Go Head-to-Head in Lead Actress Oscar Race

Power Women Go Head-to-Head in Lead Actress Oscar Race
The roles in the lead actress category run a wide range, from the precocious 6-year-old Brooklyn Prince in “The Florida Project” to 82-year-old Judi Dench playing the queen (again) in “Victoria & Abdul.” Other powerful women include previous nominees Jessica Chastain as a poker queen in “Molly’s Game,” Kate Winslet as a cheating wife in “Wonder Wheel” and Saoirse Ronan in the beloved coming-of-age tale “Lady Bird.” (At the age of 23, it’s interesting that Ronan could amost play the overdue card; she has two previous nominations and came close to winning with 2016’s “Brooklyn.”) They could battle previous winner Jennifer Lawrence; never underestimate the Academy love for her, even if “mother!” didn’t light up the box office. Other winners: Frances McDormand, delivering a fierce performance as a mother searching for justice in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and, of course, Meryl Streep. No matter that “The Post,” in which Streep plays Washington Post publisher Kay Graham

Beach Rats (Eliza Hittman)

Burgeoning sexuality is the basis for nearly all coming-of-age films, but with her specific eye, Eliza Hittman makes it feel like we’re watching this genre unfold for the first time. With only two features to her name, she’s captured the experience with a sensuality and intimacy nearly unprecedented in American independent filmmaking. Following 2013’s It Felt Like Love, the writer-director follows it with

Four Mother-Daughter Movies Could Dominate Awards Season

Four Mother-Daughter Movies Could Dominate Awards Season
Mother-daughter relationships have always been the stuff of great drama. And the Oscars are no exception. Three decades ago the “Moonstruck” acting duo Olympia Dukakis and Cher both won gold for playing a strong-willed New York Italian mother and her feisty daughter. Six years later, as a mute Scottish teacher and her de facto interpreter in New Zealand, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin repeated that twofer triumph with Jane Campion’s “The Piano.”

Onscreen mother-daughter conflict has resulted in other dual Academy Award nominations: selfless Barbara Stanwyck tricked Anne Shirley into marrying rich in tearjerker “Stella Dallas” (1937); Meryl Streep’s big mouth inspired a rebellious Julia Roberts in “August: Osage County” (2013); Piper Laurie was literally crucified by Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” (1976). At the start of this decade, Mo’Nique won an Oscar portraying the sexually abusive parent of fellow “Precious” nominee Gabourey Sidibe. Back in 1984, both Shirley MacLaine and

Lff 2017: ‘The Lovers’ Review: Dir. Azazel Jacobs (2017)

The Lovers review: The romantic comedy movie gets flipped on its head in this new, very original feature from Azazel Jacobs.

The Lovers review by Paul Heath.

“They hate each other. Watch them carefully, and if you see me acting like either of them, punch me in the face.” These are the words of young student Joel (Tyler Ross), speaking to his girlfriend Erin (Jessica Sula) about his parents Michael (Tracy Letts) and his wife Mary (Debra Winger), as they board a train to visit home for a few days. That one statement perfectly sums up the relationship of the married couple, and provides the basis for this film, a very witty, often funny insight into the later days of a lifelong relationship – a romantic comedy flipped on its head with fantastic lead performances and very clever screenplay.

Here Are 59 Actors Who Landed Oscar Nominations For Portraying Characters With Disabilities

Here Are 59 Actors Who Landed Oscar Nominations For Portraying Characters With Disabilities
Triumph over adversity is drama defined, and Oscar nominations often go to actors whose characters find victory over physical or mental afflictions. The earliest example goes back to 1947; that was the year that non-pro Harold Russell won Best Supporting Actor and a special award for “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Russell was a WWII veteran who lost both of his hands while making a training film. Of note: Of the 59, 27 of these nominations went on to a win. This year’s roster of stars playing afflicted characters includes Jake Gyllenhaal as bombing victim Jeff Baumer in “Stronger,” Andrew Garfield as polio survivor Robin Cavendish in “Breathe,” Bryan Cranston as a millionaire quadriplegic in “The Upside,” and Sally Hawkins in two roles, as an arthritic painter in “Maudie” and a mute lab worker in “The Shape of Water.”

Check out Oscar’s rather astonishing legacy of afflicted contenders below.

‘Rachel Getting Married’ and the First-Person Humanism of Jonathan Demme

Kym (Anne Hathaway) carries herself with the foresight that she is damned. She takes a drag from her ever-present cigarette as she tries to compose herself before the arrival of her family, who are on their way to pick her up from rehab. Her clothes and body language, however, tell a different story. She wears a ratty emerald green coat at all times — a coat that appears a size too large as it hangs listlessly on her frail body. Kym has a perpetual downward glance that can only be achieved through shame and internalized self-hatred. Kym bears her scars for the world to see and, despite her best efforts, she cannot slip away from the glances of everyone around her who can obviously see that she is damaged in a fundamental way. She hasn’t seen much of her family over the past few years, but she’s clean now,
