Watch: Trailer For Willow Blu-Ray

15 December 2012 1:40 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the unforgettable classic, the swords-and-sorcery fantasy epic,Willow, has been all-new digitally restored and debuts on Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack next March 12th, 2013 from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

To promote the film starring Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley, here’s the new, good-looking trailer — Adrian Biddle‘s cinematography looks rather nicely.

Fantasy adventure film from 1988, written in part by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard is known for being the first movie to feature detailed morphing, but I agree they were right to not put it in the trailer. Unlike a lot of Ilm’s technical achievements, this one hasn’t stood the test of time perfectly and some of the sequence the quality is excellent, some of it is much less than that.

If there’s one thing that historical shows such as The Tudors, Rome, and The Borgias have taight us, it’s that no matter what period of time you go to, life is filled with shagging, swearing, and murder. This isn’t one of your quaint British tea-time/evening dramas. It’s an attempt to make history hip, cool and happening with intriguing plots and sinister characters. It’s certainly not boring, and if you came here for some cold hard facts, you may be better off watching a documentary. This is adult entertainment with an eye for detail.

Billy Bob Thornton and Edward Burns Take ‘Three Nights’; ‘Harry Potter’ Actress Evanna Lynch Serving ‘Monster Butler’

6 June 2012 5:58 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With the exception of, in some cases, Bad Santa, most would agree that Billy Bob Thornton‘s best, recent outing would have to be Friday Night Lights — he and Peter Berg are in this same camp, now that I think about it — which, having an overactive mind, gets me thinking history played a big part in this next career step. Or, maybe he just likes baseball.

According to Variety, he and Edward Burns are taking the top spots in Three Nights, director David Anspaugh‘s (Rudy, Hoosiers) big-screen take on Three Nights in August, a sports memoir from… Friday Night Lights author H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger. (Yes, that’s what I took too long to build up to.) Unlike that seminal account of high school football, however, Three Nights is a fictionalized portrayal of strategic choices made by St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony Larussa during a three-game, 2003 series against the Chicago Cubs. »

Dissecting the Miniseries: “Edge of Darkness” shines a light on the – then – future of television drama

Edge of Darkness

(317 minutes, 6 parts)

Directed by Martin Campbell

Written by Troy Kennedy-Martin

1985, UK, BBC2

The way in which Edge of Darkness reaches its final moments of grandiloquence feels like tonal prolapse; as if, in giving birth to a Cold War-sized tale of nuclear espionage and corruption, a once firm-bellied thriller with a very Northern type of English brooding pushed too hard and ended up stretching itself irreversibly. Then again, from the outset there is a sense, a feeling that the boxy reserve of the visuals will not necessarily extend to theme or narrative or intellect. Think back to the moment in Jacques Audiard’s Un Prophete when it becomes evident that the film has no interest in being your garden variety realist prison thriller. Well, while not as ostentatious or perhaps as mystical, at several points during the six stellar episodes that comprise Edge of Darkness, the show’s »

Gary Oldman and Dominic Monaghan Team With Malcolm McDowell For ‘Monster Butler’

While his recent career has mostly been consumed by major tentpoles (The Dark Knight Rises, Harry Potter) or adult-geared dramas (Lawless, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Gary Oldman is getting back to some crazier independent roots, starring in a film from first-timer Doug Rath.

THR reports that The Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan will also be joining the actor in Monster Butler, which already has Malcolm McDowell and Joanne Whalley in the cast. Oldman will play — get ready for it — a “a taxidermist with anger issues” named Wiggy. I certainly hope he’s able to chew a heck of a lot of scenery after an excellent, but subdued performance in Tomas Alfredon‘s spy thriller. As for Monaghan, »
