'Sex' and the City Lights slate

9 December 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

NEW YORK -- City Lights Pictures, the Big Apple-based production arm of City Lights Media Group, has added A History of Sex, a documentary about controversial artist Andres Serrano, to its slate, along with Laurie Anderson's Songs and Stories From Moby Dick, by Mike Figgis. Other City Lights film projects include the Nicholas Ray biopic Interrupted, to be directed by Larry Clark and penned by Oren Moverman (Jesus' Son), and the feature Torn Apart. The company is also teaming with cult director John Waters on an upcoming film. Directed by Michael Coulter, "Sex" follows a 1997 Serrano exhibition at the Netherlands' Groninger Museum. Figgis' Moby Dick, in postproduction, documents Laurie Anderson's musical reimagining of the Melville novel at London's Barbican Theatre in May 2000. Specializing in film, television, video and commercial production, City Lights also runs the largest Avid editing facility in New York. "We are now capitalizing on what we have developed in the service industry, and we are looking for associations with people who interest us and projects that we can get off the ground," City Lights president Danny Fisher said. The company has also signed Serrano to direct several of its upcoming commercials and music video projects. »

'Citizen Kane' Named Top Film (Again)

9 August 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Classic movie Citizen Kane has been voted the top film of all time yet again - in not one but two prestigious polls. The Orson Welles-directed cinematic landmark topped both a critics' poll and director's list in Britain's highly-regarded Sight And Sound industry magazine. The 1941 flick, which pioneered the use of wide-angle lenses, lighting and design in Hollywood, has now topped the critics' poll, run every decade, for the past 40 years. A total of 144 critics and 108 directors, including the likes of Michael Mann, John Waters and Bernando Bertolucci, took part, with Citizen Kane appearing in most lists. Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo came second in the critics' list and sixth in the directors' - although his prolific output probably prevented him reaching a higher placing, with so many votes split between his many masterpieces. Others in the critics' list include The Godfather Part II at four, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey at six and Singin' In The Rain at 10. In the directors' poll, The Godfather flicks came second, ahead of Federico Fellini's 8 1/2, Lawrence Of Arabia and Dr Strangelove. The most recent was Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull, made in 1980 and seventh in the directors' list. »

Waters Says No One Cares About Indie

25 March 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Maverick movie maker John Waters paid tribute to America's independent filmmakers at the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California, Saturday but reminded them no one saw their films. The iconic director, who hosted the 17th annual awards, decided honesty was the best policy as he began his duties. He says, "We've had a tough year. Do you know some nights in some theatres, not even one person comes to see our films when they're playing. A lonely Monday at the 10pm show, somewhere in mid-America, every seat is empty. You've done the press junket, you've gained all that weight for the role, worked for scale to prove how serious you are about your craft, but still not one single person cares. No one came." »
