Paige Turco plays a lesbian (again) in "The Stepfather"

22 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

It's probably safe to say that most of those heading to theaters to see the remake of The Stepfather are going for its young male star, Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley. But maybe some viewers have also heard that Sela Ward plays his unsuspecting mother who falls for the killer (Dylan Walsh) trying to destroy her family, and they want to see her in action.

Another incentive to seeing The Stepfather, besides it being close to Halloween and prime scary movie time, is that Paige Turco shows up as Sela's sister, Jackie, a lesbian in a relationship with Sherry Stringfield (ER).

Jackie is a realtor who hires the stepfather to do some work for her, but begins to grow weary of him. Lesbians: We're so skeptical smart.

You may recall Paige as Officer Abby Sullivan, NYPD Blue's resident lesbian cop for a season.

Or, perhaps you can only think »

Horror Review: ‘The Stepfather’

19 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The Stepfather is a remake of a 1987 movie that starred Terry O’Quinn (Lost) as a deranged man looking for the perfect family. Of course, no such thing exists, and when a family doesn’t live up to his impossibly high standards, they meet a most unfortunate demise. He then disguises himself, moves to a new city, and sets up the cycle once again.

In this updated version, director Nelson McCormick (Prom Night 2008) tries to coax scares from the premise once again, but the movie too often wanders into camp (unintentionally, I’m sure).

Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck) steps into the stepfather shoes as David, and unfortunately, he is about as menacing as a teddy bear. I like Walsh, but I have the same problem when they try to make him do something deviant on Nip/Tuck, I just don’t buy it. That is not to say he is a bad actor, »

Movie Review: “The Stepfather”

17 October 2009 9:38 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: October 17, 2009

The players: Director: Nelson McCormick, Writer: J.S. Cardone, Cast: Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward, Penn Badgley, Amber Heard, Sherry Stringfield

Facts of interest: Another remake...

The plot: A crazy dude pretends to be the sweet stepfather but ends up going nuts and killing entire families.

Our thoughts: To tell you the truth, I could have done a way better movie with every single dollar they wasted on Nelson McCormick’s disastrous remake “The Stepfather,” a film so ridiculously predictable and boring, it really made me want to get up and tear the screen apart. Yeah, it is really That bad! »

‘The StepFather’ Movie Brought Edgy Suspense & Thrills

17 October 2009 7:04 PM, PDT | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

Screen Gems' new horror movie, "The Stepfather" brought some very edgy suspense, drama, and thrills in its debut weekend. It stars Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley, along with: Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward, Sherry Stringfield, Jon Tenney, Paige Turco, and Amber Heard. This movie was a lot better than I thought it would be,and had a very good buildup, and story plot. "The Stepfather" mostly focused on David Harris who is a serial killer that preys on divorced women and their families. He apparently looks for families that he can be apart of,without them finding out about his secret of being a serial murderer, but somehow the secret seems to always reveal itself ,and he has to kill the family to clear his trail. »

The Stepfather Reviews

16 October 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Stepfather was not screened for critics, which is almost always a bad sign. But a few still got out over lunch to see it, and here's their takes.

"The trouble with the movie, apart from its rather monotonous dourness of tone, is that everyone in the family, especially the reformed-delinquent high school son (Penn Badgley), comes off as tougher, smarter, and quicker on the draw than the stepfather who's supposed to be outfoxing them."

Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"A lazy PG-13 redo of the enjoyable 1987 R-rated suspense flick about a serial killer in search of the perfect family."

Luke Y. Thompson, E! Online

"This remake turns a fondly remembered horror/thriller into a mild and tedious suspense film."

— Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter

"...sets the bar for pointlessness, not just for extracting the social metaphor (and, incredibly, the one shock remembered by everyone who’s seen the '87 version), but »

The Week in Film: "Wild Things," a date for "A Single Man," and trailers galore

16 October 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

My high school reunion wound up being not at all traumatic, so I'm not certainly not going to let the week's movies get me down.

This week marks the long-awaited premiere of Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, adapted (by Jonze and novelist Dave Eggers) from the beloved children's book by gay author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. I can imagine audiences being widely divided over this movie — after all, even the book has had its detractors over the years — and I can say that I definitely liked it without ever really loving it.

Max Records stars as Max, the wolf-suited boy who misbehaves and runs off to an island inhabited by monsters who make him their king. The movie offers delightful visuals, a sweetly plaintive score by Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Carter Burwell, and terrific performances by Records and Catherine Keener, along with the voices of James Gandolfini, »

Amber Heard has spent the last few years solidifying her career in Hollywood and these days her name is often at the top of every casting director's list. The actress is wanted for her eye-catching looks, professionalism, and her keen acting abilities that have drawn much attention as of late. The native Texan has scored some stellar roles in the past few years; she played Seth Rogen's girlfriend in Pineapple Express, shared the silver screen with Sean Faris in Never Back Down, and has a slew of Hollywood blockbusters waiting to be released. ScreenStar spoke with the actress about her onset chainsaw mishap, working with Penn Badgley, and the excitement surrounding The Stepfather. The stunning Amber Heard has had a very busy year; she had a cameo in the runaway hit Zombieland, wrapped playing Johnny Depp's love interest in The Rum Diary, and this weekend she stars alongside Gossip Girl stud Penn Badgley. »

The Reject Report Goes Where the Wild Things Are

16 October 2009 11:34 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Welcome to another Reject Report, and this weekend we look forward to the much-anticipated Where the Wild Things Are, based on the best-selling children's book. Also rolling out is The Stepfather and Law Abiding Citizen, plus we have a Paranormal Activity update as well. All that and more in this weekend's edition! We might as well start with Paranormal Activity, which continues to roll at the box office in limited release. Last weekend it clawed its way past $7 million, and by the middle of this week it was ranking as high as third place in the overall box office. Not bad for a flick that was in 159 locations. Well, the campaign to roll this movie out in wide release has succeeded: Paramount got the 1,000,000 demands they wanted from the fans, so the movie is going wide in 760 locations. I'm doing a quick calculation here and by my estimation that should mean a haul in the neighborhood of »

The Stepfather (2009; Film Review)

16 October 2009 11:24 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Every horror fan has their own idea about the worst-case scenario and result when it comes to the remaking of a classic ’70s or ’80s fright film. Some rue the day Michael Bay grabbed the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; others can’t abide what Rob Zombie did with Halloween. For me, it was the day the team behind last year’s execrable Prom Night got their hands on the superb 1987 psychothriller The Stepfather. The result isn’t quite as awful as Prom, but it is a flat, one-dimensional movie that significantly dumbs down what was previously a provocative and genuinely chilling narrative.

It also robs the title character of the complexity and depth of the 1987 film’s Jerry Blake, played so memorably by Terry O’Quinn. David Harris (Dylan Walsh) also wants a perfect family, charms his way into the lives of widows or divorcees with kids and »

Penn Badgley On New Movie 'The Stepfather': It 'Really Terrifies'

The 'Gossip Girl' star also jokes about his many shirtless scenes in the flick, in theaters Friday.

Penn Badgley's character has it pretty easy on "Gossip Girl." But in his latest flick, The Stepfather," a remake of the classic '80s horror movie, Badgley's big-screen life is much scarier than anything Dan Humphrey has to deal with.

Badgley plays David Harris, a young man who comes home from military school to find that his mom's (Sela Ward) new husband (Dylan Walsh) has moved in. And he quickly realizes his new stepfather isn't as nice as his mom makes him out to be.

But instead of looking to the original film for inspiration, Badgley avoided it so that he could bring his own spin, saying this update is more psychological thriller than horror movie. "You know, I haven't »

Review: The Stepfather

16 October 2009 1:10 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

As if by magic, The Stepfather is almost exactly like the outward persona of its main character - it's likable, good, and mostly knows what to say, but it's not lovable, great, and its definitely not without its flaws. Essentially, on the metaphorical amps in my mind, everything here has been cranked up to 6. Perhaps the most apt description of the film is that it's competent commercial filmmaking, but nothing at all special. David Harris (or whatever his name is going to be with the next family (Dylan Walsh)) leaves a murdered family behind to go find a new one, and stumbles upon Susan (Sela Ward) and her two kids in the supermarket. A few months of courtship later, he's moved in just in time for her oldest son Michael (Penn Badgley) to come home from military school for the summer. Can they be the perfect family, or will have to kill them all and move on »

Critics Consensus: Where the Wild Things Are Is A Wild Rumpus

15 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

This week, we've got a wild rumpus (Where the Wild Things Are, starring Max Records and Catherine Keener), a legal skirmish (Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler), and some unconventional parenting (The Stepfather, starring Dylan Walsh and Sela Ward). What do the critics have to say? Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are is one of the most beloved classics of modern children's literature, but the brief text doesn't necessarily lend itself to feature-length cinematic treatment. Critics have largely praised Spike Jonze for maintain the spirit of the book while adding some visually daring touches to bring... »

Sela Ward isn't a scream queen, but she takes a stab at it in The Stepfather.
