The Pact was released today on VOD and hits theaters on July 6th from IFC Midnight. I had a chance to interview Caity Lotz, the star of the film, who talked to me about how she became involved with the project, getting into character, and her experience at Sundance:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. Can you tell me how you became involved with The Pact?
Caity Lotz: I got sent the script and I thought it was really interesting, because it was different from a slasher horror movie. It had all of these thriller elements and the character wasn’t like anything else I had played. I met with the director, read for the part, and he said that he knew I was the one he wanted as soon as I walked in.
I play the character Annie, whose mother passes away. She »

Horror films with hauntings and malicious ghosts at their center have been around for ages, but the last couple years have seen an odd trade-off happening onscreen. Movies like Insidious and the Paranormal Activity series have successfully increased the number of scares per minute while losing ground in other areas like narrative or character development. The Pa films have some brilliantly executed scares, but none of the characters are memorable in the slightest. And Insidious is scary as hell and loaded with fun moments, but the story takes a giant dump on the audience in the final few minutes. The Pact is a far lower profile release than either of those, and as such it takes a step back from their more bombastic approaches and instead finds a real balance between the scares, the characters and the story. Nicole and Annie (Caity Lotz) are grown siblings whose overbearing and abusive mother has recently died. Annie »

Stars: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Agnes Bruckner, Haley Hudson | Written and Directed by Nicholas McCarthy
There’s nothing wrong with a film not being groundbreaking, particularly in the horror genre, and Nicholas McCarthy’s The Pact certainly isn’t. And that’s not a problem if you do all the stereotypes well, and give your audience a good scare.
Following the death of her abusive mother, Nicole (Bruckner) returns to her childhood home to sort through her mother’s things. The following morning, her sister Annie (Lotz) very reluctantly joins her, but Nicole is nowhere to be found, and shortly after arriving, their cousin Liz also goes missing. What follows is Annie’s search for her sister and the secrets she uncovers along the way. Based on McCarthy’s own short, the film doesn’t set out with the intention of doing anything different with the genre. »

Kellan Lutz (photo), best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies, and Resident Evil actress Spencer Locke, will star in the performance-capture 3D movie Tarzan, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale, and to be directed by Animals United’s producers / directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe. Needless to say, Lutz will bring Tarzan back to life, while Locke will play Jane. The screenplay was written by Klooss, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs‘ Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo, whose sole listed credit on the IMDb is Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments, currently in pre-production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it updates Burroughs’ story by having Tarzan’s parents killed in a plane crash, the CEO of Greystoke Energies as the film’s chief villain, and Jane as an environmentally conscious heroine. Come to think of it, the first "update" isn’t something really new: Boy’s »

Earlier in the week Thn brought you the new trailer for director Nicholas McCarthy’s intense new horror The Pact. The film stars newcomer Caity Lotz, Agnes Bruckner and Casper Van Dien, in the story of a pair of sisters, who when reluctantly travelling back to their childhood home, come up against a malevolent force, unwilling to let them leave.
The trailer does indeed look a step above the usual tripe like The Devil Inside and Paranormal Activity, so popular in the genre nowadays. The Pact is a fleshed out version of McCarthy’s independent short film of the same name and below we have the new UK quad poster, as well as the fearsome first clip. The film hits cinemas 8th June.
