August: Osage County (The Movie)

7 July 2009 10:20 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

Cast This!

But before the movie... the tour! It starts in just under three weeks in Denver. I'm not getting paid for this but I'm going to shill because live theater needs to be promoted. It's so much cooler than TV ... even if Corporate America can't profit off of it as much (finite audience = number of seats in house) and thus makes it seem uncool by ignoring it or dismissing it as irrelevant.

Oscar winner Estelle Parsons, 81, headlines the August tour

And given that The Movie -- all caps because if it's any good it'll be Big -- is going to be the subject of much discussion whenever it begins to film and especially once it's in theaters, you'll want to be in the know early on. Even if you're not normally a theater person. If you haven't been following theatrical buzz and awardage these past couple of years, it's

Hamlet is a Tragedy No More...

30 June 2009 11:12 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

...for it brings Jude Law to the New York stage. Yes!

---> "Yes you will see Hamlet for the 17th time*, Nathaniel. By royal decree!"

Every year I vow to be done with Shakespeare but the movie stars keep roping me back in. You know my feelings here. To sum up: there are 1000s of brilliant old plays by 100s of great playwrights; we are rarely presented with anything but 37 by 1. Even here in NYC. Yes we occasionally get a revival by someone whose name doesn't rhyme with Schmakeschmeare. But more often than not it's Romeo & Juliet or Twelfth Night and Hamlet above all else.

In fact I just saw Hamlet for the 16th time last year with Michael Stuhlbarg as the Prince of Denmark. (Stuhlbarg is a well regarded stage actor but he's getting his first substantial shot at a movie career as the lead in the next Coen Bros picture,

Jude Law is heading to Broadway! He’ll reportedly be playing the role of Hamlet on the Great White Way starting this fall. The show will open October 6th at the Broadhurst Theater in New York, and run for 12 weeks. You’d better your tickets fast, Broadway buffs, because you can bet this show will sell out fast with Jude as the star! Law joins the original British cast who did the show previously in London. This will be Jude Law’s first time back on stage since 1995. He first appeared in Indiscretions with Kathleen Turner and Cynthia...

Take a Vow of Celibacy for Celluloid!

And if you're not needle averse... perhaps a tattoo of your favorite director.

I had totally forgotten about this roll call moment from John Waters' Cecil B Demented (2000) and I lurve it. Unfortunately the movie isn't as strong as its concept. It doesn't help that Melanie Griffith stars and doesn't seem to be in on the joke in the way Kathleen Turner was in Serial Mom. But it's Melanie Griffith, what can you do?

The highlight of the film: Alicia Witt as porn star Cherish. Around this time I really thought Witt was going to become a big star. But then she lost the Mary Jane role in Spider-Man and nothing ever seemed to fully ignite in that career. Runner up: Maggie Gyllenhaal (she sports the Kenneth Anger tattoo) as "Raven" slapping Melanie Griffith because Satan told her to. That's something I feel everyone should do when they're in a film with Melanie,

Streep Noms, #6 (1985)

26 June 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

A Note: I will be returning to reviewing Streep movies soon but for now let's return to discussing Streep's competitive Oscar fields. I'll try to wrap up the 80s pictures very soon. I knew this month would be Streep heavy I had no idea how mired down in the 80s nostalgia we'd get. See also: Farrah & Michael Jackson.

1985

Six Oscar nominations is a lot for anyone but what is perhaps even more impressive / serendipitous about Meryl Streep's 1985 accomplishment is that Out of Africa, a big hit and Oscar champ, was her third Best Picture winner in seven years. That's quite rare. She would go on to lose Best Actress to Geraldine Page who was, at that time, the most nominated performer (8) never to have won the golden boy (Peter O'Toole now holds the record since he lost on his 8th nomination). Page died a scant 15 months later at 62 years of age.

Streep Nom #3, 1981

20 June 2009 5:40 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

Streep at 60: Let's talk each Streep nomination and its competition.

Meryl Streep won the BAFTA, Golden Globe and the Lafca prize for her two part role in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) but she lost the Oscar anyway. The nominees were:

Katharine Hepburn, On Golden PondDiane Keaton, RedsMarsha Mason, Only When I Laugh

Susan Sarandon, Atlantic City

Meryl Streep, The French Lieutenant's Woman

The French Lieutenant's Woman opened.

On Golden Pond made Katharine Hepburn a four-time Oscar winner. She's still far out in front of everyone in the acting Oscar derby save Jack Nicholson who has three and could conceivably join her. He is 72 and still works far more often than Hepburn was working in her 70s when she won this.

The snubbed in '81? Sissy Spacek in Raggedy Man and Sally Field in Absence of Malice were Globe Drama nominees and Bernadette Peters was the Musical/Comedy Globe winner for Pennies From Heaven.

12 June 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

Michael Douglas was the man of the evening last night as he received an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in La. He hit the red carpet on the arm of his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, while his Ghosts of Girlfriends Past costar Matthew McConaughey brought along Camila Alves. Kiefer Sutherland and Tobey Maguire took the stage to pay tribute to their pal Michael, and Catherine even brought out her Chicago skills for a song-and-dance number in her husband's honor. Michael's been a Hollywood heavyweight for decades, but we'll see more of him on the big screen in the Wall Street sequel and, according to Catherine, a project they're looking to star in together. Romancing the Douglas

Greed has definitely been good for Michael Douglas. Douglas, 64, beamed as friends old and new shared favorite stories of the Oscar-winning actor-producer amid clips of his greatest hits. May Flowers, Kathleen Turner

May Flowers, weeknights @ 11:00

Kathleen Turner as Joan Wilder. She's a hopeless... no, a hopeful romantic. What a slam dunk star turn that was. And how galling that Romancing the Stone didn't net her an Oscar nomination. It was deglam and glam in one package. Plus it was super fun and Oscar should remember to have fun more often. Fun movies sometimes have more staying power than dutiful prestige pics. Not all the time but why eliminate them because they aren't serious? Screwball comedies were as far from serious as it gets and Oscar didn't hate those.

The Oscar Nominees that year were four previous winners and one breakthrough performer (Judy Davis)

Judy Davis, A Passage to IndiaSally Field, Places in the Heart (winner)

Jessica Lange, CountryVanessa Redgrave, The Bostonians

Sissy Spacek, The River

If I had been giving out my awards back then, the Best Actress list would not have been 60% farm wives.

Stephanie Seymour, Peter Brant in 'War of Roses'

7 May 2009 2:12 PM, PDT | From TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news

Former supermodel Stephanie Seymour is involved in a bitter “War of the Roses" divorce from polo-playing husband Peter Brant. The split is coming after 16 years of marriage and three children, but neither is apparently willing to give up the palatial home in tony Greenwich, Conn. So they are sharing it. The situation is similar to the 1989 Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner film, "War of the Roses." The parties are due in court in Greenwich on Monday (May 11). Brant is known to play hard on the polo field and he apparently is doing the same with Seymour. He's demanding custody of their three children, Peter Jr., 15, Harry, 12, and Lilly, 4, and he’s taking the low road to get it; he’s accused Seymour of being an unfit mother.

Tony Award Nominations / Movie Connections

5 May 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

The Tony Award Nominations are upon us. As is my inconsistent tradition, I thought I'd share a little bit about a movies you can rent or think about to create an unfulfilling celluloid guilty-by-association approximation of the Broadway experience of the 2008/2009 season before the TONYs roll around on June 7th. Not everyone gets to New York to see the shows. And even if you live here, like me, you don't get to them in your financially challenged years. Tony Winners Cynthia Nixon (who seems to be everywhere lately, right?) and In the Height's man Lin-Manuel Miranda are announcing them live any minute now.

If you want a reminder of what's eligible which you can use to see who got snubbed check out this eligibility chart.

Another 'Roger Rabbit' Movie Being Thought Of

29 April 2009 9:57 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

A sequel to 1988 fantasy comedy "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" could be brewing. Talking to MTV News, director Robert Zemeckis offered an interesting scoop of the matter when he confessed that he is indeed toying with the idea to bring the ill-behaved rabbit back to the big screen.

"I'll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability - the digital tools, performance capture - I'm starting to think about 'Roger Rabbit'," the 56-year-old Academy Award-winning helmer stated. Still when pressed further on the potential film's details, the "Beowulf" director responded with a rejection, "I can't give you more details."

While nothing is certain yet on the possible new installment of "Roger Rabbit" movie, the original 1988 "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" has successfully rekindled an interest in the golden Age of American animation. Combining the use of traditional animation and live action with elements of film noir,

Top 7 Body Switching Comedies

15 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | From The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

One minute you’re a pimple covered teen railing at the injustice of adults, the next you are an adult! Welcome to the improbable world of body switching comedies. Kirk Cameron and Fred Savage failed to launch film careers from such auspicious beginnings, but that hasn’t deterred Zac Efron from taking his shot in 17 Again. He’s not totally copying his illustrious predecessors, 17 Again is more of a body getting a second chance than parent-and-child-switching-places type film, but the principle’s the same. Who doesn’t wish they were an adult as a teen? What adult doesn’t consider what he or she would do differently if given the chance to be a teen again? And who doesn’t love the total wackiness that ensues? That’s what I thought. Here are 7 of the best.

Kathleen Turner and Peter Gallagher Turn Body Heat into Californication

6 April 2009 9:43 AM, PDT | From TVGuide - Breaking News | See recent TVGuide.com - Breaking News news

Californication's Hank Moody has a new literary contact and a new antagonist in the third season of Califonication, courtesy of new castmates Kathleen Turner and Peter Gallagher.

Maybe it's us, but the sultry-voiced Turner (Body Heat, War of the Roses) seems like the perfect choice to play Charlie's (Evan Handler) sexy and tough new agency head — who has a thing for him. Turner is slated to appear in 10 of the season's 12 episodes. Let the awesomely awkward sexual harassment begin!

Meanwhile, Hank (David Duchovny), who will be blundering his way through his role as a single parent to Becca (Madeleine Martin) this season, takes a new gig as a university professor. As reported last week, Numbers' Diane Farr will join the cast as a sexy teacher's assistant who gets her naughty on with Hank in several episodes.

"Van Gock"

"Van Goch! Did you hear that? She said

'Van Goch'. Like an Arab she spoke."

-Woody Allen ManhattanToday marks the 156th anniversary of the birth of one Vincent Van Gogh. Strangely I've never seen any of the film versions of his life. Neither Robert Altman's Theo and Vincent (1990) nor the César lauded French biopic Van Gogh (1991). Not even the Oscar winning Lust For Life (1956) with Kirk Douglas. Have you? The only time I've seen him portrayed onscreen was by none other than Martin Scorsese in Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990). Kurosawa began as a painter so perhaps the affinity was born there. Dreams was my first Kurosawa and I saw it, believe it or not, in Japanese with Norwegian subtitles. Not that the language barriers mattered with such a visual film... Oh and don't freak -- I've since rectified my former Kurosawalessness.

What were we talking about? Oh, Van Gogh.
