Napa Valley Film Festival Rises After Fires Devastate Region
Watching as Northern California’s wine country became engulfed by flames that scorched 220,000 acres and claimed the lives of 42 people, Napa Valley Film Festival co-founders and directors Marc and Brenda Lhormer teetered on the brink of canceling this year’s fete.

“During the first days, we only were hearing and fearing the worst,” says Marc Lhormer of unfounded rumors that partner wineries and hotels had been destroyed. “Brenda and I actually left our home and, living out of a suitcase for nine nights, kept moving things forward.”

He adds that two days after the fires erupted, the couple gathered their team. “We went around the room asking if everyone, and their families and loved ones, was Ok, and we discussed how we could help each other. Then, we had to determine if we were all mentally and physically up for putting on the show, a show everyone had worked so hard on, full time, all

Toronto Film Review: ‘Who We Are Now’

Toronto Film Review: ‘Who We Are Now’
For a significant portion of “Who Are We Now,” an exemplary indie drama from writer-director Matthew Newton (“From Nowhere”), the lives of its two main characters never intersect, almost to the point where it feels like two short stories that are barely tethered together. This is a risky narrative strategy, to say the least, but it also reveals the depth of Newton’s commitment: He wants the audience to understand these two women completely — their jobs, their families, their turbulent emotional states — before they get to know each other. By the time that finally happens, the stakes are extraordinarily high and the performances, by Julianne Nicholson and Emma Roberts, have a combined power that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Low-concept, modestly scaled indies are always a hard sell, but authentic passion and a steady accumulation of detail sets “Who We Are Now” apart.

Recently released from prison after a long stretch, Beth

Kelly Lynch Turned Down Sharon Stone's Iconic Basic Instinct Role — Why She Says 'I Don't Regret a Bit of That'
Kelly Lynch knows why she was cast in 1988’s Cocktail.

“It was one of those parts that models get because my audition was various bikinis,” the actress, whose background was in modeling and children’s theater, tells People.

After acting opposite Tom Cruise, she got steamy with Patrick Swayze in 1989’s Road House. “To do your first two films with Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise, who are both — were, in Patrick’s case — really amazing sweet and kind, guys, I loved working with both of them,” says Lynch, now 58. “They were really, really fun.”

But it wasn’t until the

Newswire: On tonight’s A.V. Club TV show, Lea Thompson and second acts

  • The AV Club
This week’s episode of The A.V. Club TV show is about second acts. On the episode, John Teti will demonstrate the best way to orchestrate a second act if you are a celebrity in crisis, and Lea Thompson will talk about her own personal second act. But, since our show is only a mere half hour, we can’t fit in all the things we want to talk about. So I will write about those things on this weekly entry. Behold, my picks for Best Second Acts of 2017 So Far.

Master Of None, season two

I was not on board for Master Of None season one. I wasn’t emotionally invested in Aziz Ansari’s “tragically single nice guy” character, Dev. Despite this, I had to show up and support the half-hour comedy created and starring numerous people of color as it entered its second season. I ...

Newswire: Howard The Duck star Lea Thompson dubs herself “the first Marvel queen”

  • The AV Club
Guardians Of The Galaxy sort of introduced classic comic icon Howard The Duck to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his first big-screen adventure came out more than 30 years ago. Now, the human star of Howard The Duck, Lea Thompson, is staking a claim for her place as “the first Marvel queen.” Thompson gave herself that title during a Facebook Live interview with Yahoo Movies, which briefly touched on Howard The Duck and the “resurgence” that the movie is enjoying these days.

“People love that movie,” Thompson said, adding that she loves Howard The Duck fans because “they’re iconoclasts” and they “don’t like to be told what to like and what to hate.” Thompson played a very ‘80s singer in the movie who helps the eponymous duck adjust to life on Earth, and though she’s happy with its legacy, she does regret that the film is “a ...

‘American Fighter’ Film Launches With Tommy Flanagan, Bryan Craig, Sean Patrick Flanery

‘American Fighter’ Film Launches With Tommy Flanagan, Bryan Craig, Sean Patrick Flanery
Producers Forrest Lucas and Ali Afshar are launching the underground fighting drama “American Fighter” with Tommy Flanagan, Bryan Craig, Sean Patrick Flanery, Parviz Sayyad, and George Kosturos attached to star.

The Esx Entertainment movie is a sequel to “American Wrestler: The Wizard”, which starred John Voight, William Fichtner, Lia Marie Johnson, Afshar, and Kosturos.

Shaun Piccinino is directing “American Fighter”, which revolves around a desperate teenager who is forced into the dangerous world of underground fighting to win enough money to save his ailing mother. He finds out what he’s made of in the face of hungry competitors.

Afshar, Christina Moore and Anna Zielinski are producing the film, based on Afshar’s story. Principal photography begins this month in Northern California.

“Continuing down the line of a ‘Rocky’ meets ‘Karate Kid’ story, this new ‘American Wrestler’ movie remains a very heartfelt project for me,” Afshar said. “The response to my true story was extremely motivating so I wanted to keep the story going in a consistent manner and tone and have the right script and cast to rekindle the magic of the first film. The sequel is an original story and not based on my life – I don’t think I would have excelled as an underground fighter.”

Lucas, founder and owner of Lucas Oil Products, teamed with actor-producer Afshar in 2015 to launch the production company Esx Entertainment. The slate includes action-drama “Ride,” starring actor and rapper Chris “Ludacris” Bridges; the drama “Dirt” starring Kevin Dillon and DeRon Horton; and “The Dog Lover,” a drama starring Lea Thompson, James Remar, Allison Paige, and Jayson Blair.

Flanagan’s credits include “Sons of Anarchy” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” Craig won a pair of daytime Emmys for “General Hospital.” Flanery starred in “Boondock Saints” and “Powder.”

Exclusive: A Convo About Pickles and Sex With Lea Thompson and Madelyn Deutch

Exclusive: A Convo About Pickles and Sex With Lea Thompson and Madelyn Deutch
It’s a cliché to start an interview by describing what the subject is eating, but for this story, it feels necessary.

Writer-actor Madelyn Deutch has been coming to Art’s Delicatessen in Studio City for all 26 years of her life. She ate her first pickle here and made a face that her mother, actor Lea Thompson, who’s been in Hollywood classics like Back to the Future, Some Kind of Wonderful and All the Right Moves, describes by squishing her whole face inward. Thompson started frequenting Art’s 35 years ago, when she first arrived in Los Angeles from suburban Minnesota.

“Can I have some old pickles?” Deutch asks a server she seems to know from her many visits to the restaurant. “They’re saltier,” she says to explain the request. “I'm a real weirdo because I come here to get the old pickles and a chocolate egg cream, which is chocolate milk and seltzer mixed together
