'Bloodline': Netflix series picked up for Season 3

13 July 2016 10:21 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

There’s good news for fans of the Rayburns and the Netflix series Bloodline. It’s been picked up for a third season. The streaming service today announced that the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated show, about a Florida family with dark secrets (isn’t this true of every family in Florida?), received a 10-episode order. While the first season of the show was 13 episodes, last year was decreased to only 10 episodes. So perhaps that’s going to be the norm going forward for Bloodline. In a statement, Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content for Netflix, said that producers “have created a riveting family saga…We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds.” Bloodline stars Emmy winner Kyle Chandler, Oscar winner Sissy Spacek, Ben Mendelsohn, Linda Cardellini and Norbert Leo Butz. The series will return in 2017. »

Bloodline renewed for season 3 by Netflix

Chris Longo Jul 15, 2016

Netflix is making a commitment to Bloodline season 3, even if they need to relocate production on the series...

Despite uncertainties surrounding its shooting location and an underwhelming sophomore season, Netflix has confirmed Bloodline season 3.

The Florida-set family thriller, from creators Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler, is set to return in 2017 for 10 episodes. Stars Kyle Chandler, Sissy Spacek, Ben Mendelsohn, Linda Cardellini, and Norbert Leo Butz will return to the cast.

A third season nearly didn’t happen as the Florida-shot series would be far more costly to produce after the state’s tax incentives program expired earlier this year and the state legislature voted against replenishing the funds. According to THR:

Bloodline, along with Miami-set HBO football comedy Ballers, had scooped up the last of the monies from the $300 million the state had allocated in 2010, allowing both shows to get through their most second seasons with financial breaks. »

‘Carrie’: Brian De Palma’s Empathetic Reflection of Abuse

6 July 2016 10:08 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Brian De Palma‘s Carrie begins in the soft-haze of a high-school girls’ locker room. The camera lingers of the naked bodies of Carrie’s (Sissy Spacek) abusers and clearly sets them apart from the frail girl who showers by herself. As the others frolic and laugh among themselves, Carrie rests inside of her own body. In close-up, Carrie washes her face, breasts, and abdomen until she reaches her inner thigh. She drops her bar of soap and the lilting score from composer Pino Donaggio changes key into something more sinister when it is revealed that Carrie has begun her first period and menstrual blood slides down the side of her leg. She screams at the arrival of the punishment of Eve, and blood will be a harbinger of everything to come for one Carrie White.

Kyle Chandler Is the Supple Spine of ‘Bloodline’ (Emmy Video)

27 June 2016 12:21 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bloodline” Season 2, now streaming on Netflix, is a must-see. And much of the credit goes to its star, Kyle Chandler.

From “Damages” creators Todd and Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman, the feverish Florida neo-noir is a dysfunctional family drama that reveals how and why three siblings would turn on their oldest brother (Ben Mendelsohn). The writers were fascinated by the roles taken on by each member of a family, from the black sheep to the fixer. When volatile wild card Danny Rayburn re-enters the scene, he disrupts the Rayburn family, led by its hotelier and matriarch (Sissy Spacek) and local detective John Rayburn (Chandler). (Mendelsohn and Chandler both scored acting Emmy nominations for Season 1.)

In Season 2, John and his two agitated siblings (Linda Cardellini and Norbert Leo Butz) must deal with the aftermath of Danny’s murder. Danny haunts them in more ways than one, not only messing with their heads, »

Why I Can’t Love Brian De Palma (Though I’ve Always Wished I Could)

26 June 2016 4:50 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Back when I was a kid, and a lot more naïve about how the motion picture industry works, I had expectations of filmmakers that were completely unreasonable in their very reverence. If I saw a masterpiece, and then placed the person who directed it high atop my superstar pedestal of art heroes, I longed for him or her to go forward and make 10 or 20 more masterpieces (hey, why not!), and I always felt keenly disappointed if it didn’t work out that way. It was hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that even a movie as enthralling and visionary and apparently brilliantly orchestrated as “The Godfather” or “Nashville” was, among other things, a kind of fantastic accident: a coming together of elements that even the director isn’t always (or ever) in full control of.

But when it came to the art heroes who let me down, »

The Fury: Brian De Palma’s underrated, explosive movie

Director Brian De Palma followed Carrie with another gory vaunt into the supernatural. Here's why The Fury deserves a revisit...

When it comes to telekinesis and gory visual effects, the movie that generally springs to mind is David Cronenberg’s 1981 exploding head opus, Scanners. But years before that, American director Brian De Palma was liberally dowsing the screen with claret in his 1976 adaptation of Carrie - still rightly regarded as one of the best Stephen King adaptations made so far. A less widely remembered supernatural film from De Palma came two years after: De Palma’s supernatural thriller, The Fury.

The Fury was made with a more generous budget than Carrie, had a starrier cast (Kirk Douglas in the lead, John Cassavetes playing the villain), and it even did pretty well in financial terms. Yet The Fury had the misfortune of being caught in a kind of pincer movement between Carrie, »
