Laura San Giacomo and Sandra Bernhard talk playing a lesbian couple on "Hot in Cleveland"

7 December 2011 10:43 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Hot in Cleveland debuted in 2010 as the highest-rated series TVLand has ever aired. The sitcom, starring Betty White, Valerie Bertinelli, Wendy Malick and Jane Leeves, follows four single women described as "past-their-prime" as they attempt to find themselves (and find husbands) in Cleveland, Ohio. At the end of Season 2, the Emmy-award winning show has delved into lesbianish territory, with Wendy's character, Victoria, marrying Jane's Joy in Canada. Of course, they aren't lovers — it was "accidental" and alcohol-induced.

Last week, Hot in Cleveland returned for a third season, and Joy and Victoria are still married, begrudgingly. But when Victoria is invited to discuss her past soap career on talk show The Chatter, she decides to use her marriage as a career-reviver after host Christal (played by Kathy Lee Gifford) says they are looking for a fourth co-host but she has to be a lesbian ("to compete with the Rosies and the »

Morning Meme: Gays Weird Out Guy Fieri, Joe Manganiello's Revealing "Magic Mike" Tease, and Wilson Bethel Gives a Shirt

18 October 2011 4:51 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

The breaking news for television today is lesbians. They're everywhere. Let's have a rundown.

Just Shoot Me!'s Laura San Giacomo is guesting on Hot In Cleveland as Valerie Bertinelli's estranged lesbian sister, who is involved with Sandra Bernhard's character. Meanwhile Wendy Mallick has been pretending to be a lesbian to restart her soap opera career.

Meanwhile, on The New Girl, June Diane Raphael is going to recur as one of Zooey Dechanel's friends, a lesbian Ob/Gyn who prescribes some pills for Nick. Somehow archery is going to factor into all of this.

Moving from lesbians to gays, the new NBC comedy 33-1/3 will feature a woman who moves back in with her mother after a failed marriage proposal and has to deal with her slacker gay brother who lives in the basement. Is Max on Happy Endings sparking a new trend of slacker gays?

Morning Brew - Monday, Oct. 17: A lesbian doctor comes to "New Girl," a lesbian couple on "Hot in Cleveland"

17 October 2011 7:03 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Good morning! I hope you had a great weekend.

June Diane Raphael has scored a recurring role on Fox's New Girl as Jess' "smart, slightly intimidating but helpful lesbian friend who is an Ob/Gyn by day and a skilled archery player by night." June, for those of you who don't know her, is a hilarious actress who is also Bff with Casey Wilson (Happy Endings). They are readying their buddy comedy, Ass Backwards, that has a huge lesbian scene and I am still waiting patiently to see it. I'll probably see June play the Obgyn first! (Aka I'll have to start watching New Girl.)

Wait — more lesbians on TV? Sandra Bernhard and Laura San Giacomo are coming to Hot in Cleveland as a couple! (I love Laura — she was so good in Sex, Lies and Videotape.) From TVGuide:

"I play Valerie's [estranged] sister, Caroline," says Laura. Caroline reveals she's a »

The TV Land sitcom is a solid hit that has given 89-year-old Betty White yet another show – and another Emmy!

It also stars three other sitcom vets who know how to deliver the laughs: Wendi Malick, Valerie Bertinelli and Jane Leeves.

Production on the show’s third season began this week with new episodes set to premiere on Nov.30.

TV Land has announced an impressive roster of guest stars for the upcoming episodes: Kathie Lee Gifford (“Today With Kathie Lee & Hoda”), Sandra Bernhard (“Roseanne”), Laura San Giacomo“Just Shoot Me”), Gilles Marini (“Sex and the City”) and many more. Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace”), who serves as executive producer of the show, will also guest star.

Harry Potter director David Yates looks set to take a Stand

11 August 2011 6:05 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With his wizarding adventure drawing to a close this past month with the release of the billion-dollar grossing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, director David Yates now looks set to turn his attention to another novel, Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic epic The Stand. Yates, whose four Potter outings – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and 2 – have pulled in almost four billion dollars at the global box-office, is set to reunite with screenwriter Steve Kloves (who penned all of the Potters barring Order of the Phoenix), with HitFix reporting that Warner Bros. are close to finalising a deal with both parties.

Originally published in 1978, The Stand sees approximately 99.4% of the world’s population killed by a ‘superflu’ virus known as ‘Captain Tripps’. As society breaks down, two groups of survivors emerge »

The Curious Cameography of Woody Allen

5 April 2011 12:53 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

With reports out of France that Woody Allen is shooting a cameo for the film "Paris Manhattan," a comedy from first-time director Sophie Lellouche in which part of the plot revolves around a pharmacist (Alice Taglioni) so obsessed with his work she prescribes DVDs of his films to patients, the 75-year-old filmmaker continues a tradition of picking peculiar projects to appear in outside of his own.

In a career that's entering its fifth decade, Allen has starred in just six films he hasn't directed ("Play It Again, Sam," "The Front," "Scenes From a Mall," the 1996 "Sunshine Boys" TV remake, "Antz" and "Picking Up the Pieces") and limited himself to a handful of other uncredited cameos. Though he's scarcely performed in anything in recent years - his last role as an actor was in 2006's "Scoop" - some of his most intriguing roles have come in the films in which he's scarcely seen, »

CBS Films Remaking King's 'The Stand'

1 February 2011 10:47 AM, PST | Filmology | See recent Filmology news »

Stephen King's epic novel of world-ending disease and the ultimate battle between good and evil, The Stand, was the first adult book I read. And boy, was it ever adult. Sex, sickness, suicide, murder, the Devil, drugs, cannibalism-in classic King fashion, it was all there.

Maybe that soft spot it has in my heart is the reason I don't think anyone could really make a movie out of The Stand. Remember that godawful TV miniseries back in 1994 with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald? And Just Shoot Me's Laura San Giacomo? With the exception of Rob Lowe as the sexy deaf-mute Nick (homeboy is best when he doesn't talk), what the hell was up with that casting?

Stephen King’s The Stand Headed to the Big Screen

31 January 2011 6:31 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Randall Flagg is back. Stephen King’s massive tome “The Stand” is one of the few Stephen King novels that I have read cover to cover. It’s got a killer premise, and it moves very well despite its huge size and ginormous ensemble cast. I also enjoyed the mini-series from the ’90s, starring Rob Lowe and Gary Sinise, not to mention Molly Ringwald and Laura San Giacomo. Now Warner Bros. and CBS Films are teaming up to bring King’s post-apocalyptic/horror story to the big screen, though it’s unsure if they’re planning a single movie, or a series of movies. The studios will be deciding that when they start meeting with writers to hear ideas in the coming weeks. Given that the original novel clocks in at a whopping 800-plus pages, the notion of squeezing all of “The Stand” into a single movie seems a tad ambitious, »

Where Everyone Has Gone Before #27: 'Sex, Lies and Videotape'

Welcome to Where Everyone Has Gone Before, the weekly column where I continue my film education before your very eyes by seeking out and watching all of the movies I should have seen by now. I will first judge the movie before I've watched it, based entirely on its reputation (and my potentially misguided thoughts). Then I will give the movie a fair chance and actually watch it. You will laugh at me, you may condemn me, but you will never say I didn't try!

The Film: 'Sex, Lies and Videotape' (1989), Dir. Steven Soderbergh

Starring: James Spader, Andie McDowell, Peter Gallagher, Peter Gallagher's eyebrows and Laura San Giacomo.

Why I Haven't Seen It Until Now: You see, I had my friend's birthday party and then I had to pick my mom up from the airport and I was really, really tired and I had work »
