‘Sweet Country’ Heads Acquisitions Slate for Saga Films (Exclusive)
Saga Films, a recently launched pan-Asian sales and distribution company, has picked up multi-territory rights to a trio of current films. Among them is Australian thriller “Sweet Country,” which won major prizes at both the Venice and Toronto festivals last month and plays this week in the World Focus section of the Tokyo International Film Festival.

October Horrors 2017 Day 22 – Angel Heart (1987)

Angel Heart, 1987.

Directed by Alan Parker.

Starring Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, Lisa Bonet, and Charlotte Rampling.

Synopsis:

It’s 1955, and New York-based private investigator Harry Angel is hired by the mysterious businessmen Louis Cyphre to track down Johnny Favourite, an elusive lounge singer who owes Cyphre a very large debt. As he investigates, Angel finds himself embroiled in a dark mystery of violence, murder, and mysticism, with the hunt for Favourite leaving many bodies in its wake.

With its dodgy dames, greasy gumshoes, dimly lit alleys, and jazzy booze soaked mysteries, noir is simply one of the coolest and most fascinating genres ever to have existed.

Noir while fascinating on its own is, in my view, at its most engaging and interesting when writers and directors try to mix it with other genres. An easy example to point to would be Ridley Scott’s melding of noir with science

Spider-Man: Homecoming Star Hints That Venom Could Show Up In The Sequel

The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming has one of the strongest rogues galleries in comic books to turn to when finding a new supervillain worthy of matching up to the friendly neighbourhood hero.

While the obvious suggestions, judging by the film’s post-credits scene, are Scorpion and the Sinister Six, Jacob Batalon – who plays Peter Parker’s best bud Ned – has a different idea. He wants to see Homecoming 2 break down the walls between universes and pit Spidey against Tom Hardy’s Venom, who’s set to appear in Sony’s solo movie.

The actor briefly chatted about his hopes in an interview with Screen Rant, saying the following:

Screen Rant: In your fantasy world what villain would you like to see next for the next Spider-Man film?

Jacob Batalon: It would be interesting to see like Venom, but that’s just me though.

Screen Rant: Alright well hopefully we

Busan: Darren Aronofsky Condemns Harvey Weinstein’s Behavior: ‘Unacceptable,’ ‘Unlawful,’ ‘Disgusting’

Busan: Darren Aronofsky Condemns Harvey Weinstein’s Behavior: ‘Unacceptable,’ ‘Unlawful,’ ‘Disgusting’
Darren Aronofsky responded to a question from Variety about the Harvey Weinstein scandal at the Busan International Film festival on Thursday, saying: “Sexual abuse of any type anywhere is unacceptable, it is unlawful, it is disgusting and it needs to be battled by everyone — men and women have to have absolutely no tolerance for it.” Aronofsky was speaking ahead of the gala screening of his polarising film ‘Mother” at the festival. Recently, Weinstein was fulsome in his praise for the film, describing it as “brilliant”. Responding to a question about criticisms that he pushes his female actors too far, Aronofsky said, “I push male actors as much as I push female actors, there’s no difference. Mickey Rourke gets butchered in the movie. Jared Leto loses an arm, Natalie Portman dances to her death. I am interested in humans, and humanity. And I have always been less attracted to making movies with so-called Hollywood endings where things

Oscar Opportunity: Why There Are So Many Last-Minute Entries in the 2018 Awards Race

Oscar Opportunity: Why There Are So Many Last-Minute Entries in the 2018 Awards Race
Way back in 2008, Fox Searchlight jumped into Oscar action with Toronto pickup “The Wrestler;” it yielded two 2009 Oscar acting nominations for Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei. Similarly, having lost “Birth of a Nation” as a viable candidate, Searchlight picked up “Jackie” at Tiff 2016 and landed three nominations including Natalie Portman for Best Actress. Last-minute Oscar-hopeful buys are relatively rare; awards campaigns aren’t meant to be rush jobs. However, it sometimes pays to be opportunistic and the 2018 race looks like one of those years.

Eager to prove itself, rising indie Neon plunked down $5 million for North American rights to “I, Tonya” (December 8), even though Margot Robbie and Allison Janney will go up against intense competition in the two Actress categories.
