Blu-Ray Review: Don’t Miss Joaquin Phoenix in Excellent ‘Two Lovers’

6 July 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | From HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news

Chicago – James Gray’s highly underrated and tragically underseen “Two Lovers” will undoubtedly find a loyal and loving audience on Blu-Ray. Joaquin Phoenix’s totally obnoxious behavior overshadowed what is arguably the best performance of his career in this ’70s-esque drama about a man caught between what he has and what he wants.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0 Happiness is not having what you want, it’s wanting what you have. Poor Leonard (Joaquin Phoenix) can’t figure out either in “Two Lovers,” a daringly old-fashioned drama with an undeniably ’70s style but themes as old as the written word.

Two Lovers was released on Blu-Ray on June 30th, 2009.

The series will be a co-production with Sci Fi Channel (soon to be renamed Syfy). It will debut on Movie Central and The Movie Network in spring 2010.

The Phantom was created by Lee Falk and first appeared in 1936 as a newspaper strip. Since then a character with that name has appeared in comic books by numerous publishers throughout the world. The Phantom has also starred in animated and live-action screen adaptations. The latter include a 1940s movie serial, a 1996 theatrical film and a 1961 TV pilot. Another feature film adaptation, The Phantom: Legacy, is also in the works.  Speaking to Moviehole, screenwriter Tim Boyle said that the movie is still at the scripting stage and he believes it will go into pre-production

Gettin' The Goods On Da Candidate

So many are running for the job of Manhattan Da that there aren't enough felons to go around.

Every day brings announcements of some lunch, dinner, tea, cocktail party, snack or bagel shop opening. I've done a sitdown with Cy Vance Jr., whom Robert Morgenthau has almost anointed. I attended a breakfast for Leslie Crocker Snyder with her slavishly devoted friends. Now a Richard Aborn fund-raiser.

If only Aborn's limitless in-laws alone vote, he could win. Pia Lindstrom, Ingrid Bergman's daughter, gave a reception. Isabella Rossellini, Pia's half-sister via Bergman's second husband,

Rossellini Tortured The Paparazzi

22 May 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress/model Isabella Rossellini spent her childhood "torturing" the paparazzi who camped outside her family home in Italy.

The 56-year-old star is the daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, whose marriage attracted vast amounts of press attention.

But the young Rossellini was bemused by the constant presence of photographers outside their home as she was growing up - so she waged a "war" against them with her siblings.

Rossellini, her twin sister Isotta, and brother Roberto would spend their days pelting snappers with rocks and water - much to the horror of their mother Bergman.

She says, "The paparazzi were always there. We threw stones at them, and water. We had a war with them. My mother was just like, 'Stop! Stop! They will think I have some savage children and it will be my fault!' But we had a ball torturing them."

Salute Your Shorts: Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno

14 May 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

Salute Your Shorts is a weekly column that looks at short films, music videos, commercials or any other short form visual media that generally gets ignored.

There are stranger films then Isabella Rossellini’s Green Porno series of shorts for the Sundance Channel. But I challenge anyone to find any others that are as interesting as they are just plain odd, and unlike something thrown together for YouTube just to freak people out, Rossellini’s shorts have actually been shown on television. Hell, the series has even been mentioned on The Colbert Report, not an easy feat for any non-bear-related piece of entertainment. If anything, that more than a few people have watched and enjoyed the series makes the whole thing even weirder.

'Prop. 8' musical spoof among Webby Award winners

5 May 2009 2:46 PM, PDT | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

FunnyOrDie.com's "Prop 8: The Musical" starring Jack Black and Neil Patrick Harris as well as the Sundance Channel's "Green Porno" starring Isabella Rossellini are among the notable recipients of Webby Awards, which were announced today. Oh, yeah, and Paris Hilton was among the losers. Her video reply to John McCain's campaign ad claimed neither a jury nor people's voice prize. What's notable about the current crop of Webby Awards winners is the overlap — and disagreement — between those sets of awards. For example, both sets of kudos agreed that 1000 Awesome Things was the best culture/personal blog. However, in terms of humor websites, the jurors preferred TheOnion.com while regular Web users voted for FailBlog. Check out the full list of recipients here. Winners will receive their honors at a ceremony held on June 8 in New York City, hosted by "Saturday Night Live" star Seth Myers.

HarperStudio: A New Book Publishing Model That Pays Authors 50-50

24 April 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | From Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news

Julia Cheiffetz Senior Editor HarperStudio New York, New York Julia Cheiffetz, 30, edits books at HarperStudio, a new imprint of HarperCollins that's trying to rethink both the format of books and the business model. HarperStudio will publish just two books a month and offer authors 50-50 profit sharing, rather than a traditional 7% to 15% royalty.

"There's this sense of doom and gloom in the publishing business, but this is an amazing moment. Ultimately, technology is going to not only enable people to read more but also enable new art forms. At HarperStudio, there's an R&D element to what we're doing. For instance, we gave all of our authors Flip cameras and asked them to start video blogging, opening up their writing process and cultivating an audience as soon as a book is acquired. We're looking at multimedia packaging, such as including a DVD of Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno films along with her new photo book.

Garbage Moguls: The Trashiest Reality TV Show Ever [preview]

22 April 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | From Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news

Reality shows are often classified as trashy TV. Now things have come full circle with a reality program focusing on--you guessed it--garbage. Garbage Moguls, premiering today on The National Geographic Channel, follows a team from "upcycling" start-up Terracycle as they take different waste products and figure out how to turn them into products that can be sold to retailers.

Terracycle, founded in 2001, got its start selling natural plant food made out of worm waste products. Now the company takes waste products of all stripes that can't be recycled and upcycles them into backpacks, pencil cases, folders, and more. Earlier this month, Terracycle inked a deal with Mars, Inc. to recycle waste packaging from cell phone holders and laptop sleeves into messenger bags.

The first episode of Garbage Moguls features Oreo wrappers and Coca-Cola billboards transformed into kites and messenger bags that are ultimately sold to Wal-Mart and Office Max. As with every reality show,

Green Porno Returns!!

"Nature is scandalous." Isabella Rossellini

I don't know how I missed this, but the wonderful, strange, and brilliant world of Green Porno isn't over. (You know, the short film series cooked up by Isabella Rossellini where she dons costumes and acts out the sexual techniques of the wild kingdom?) In fact, we've got two more helpings on the way! And here I thought the brilliance of insect mating was all we'd get.

The second season of Green Porno focuses on marine life, and it is already available for our viewing pleasure over at SundanceChannel.com. This time, Isabella starts off by musing about the many penises that exist on our wonderful Earth (many brilliantly recreated with paper), and then dips into the sexual appetites and practices of whales, starfish, limpets, anglerfish, and barnacles. Better yet, that's not all. In a funky interview with Bust (which you can watch here), Rossellini

Rossellini Calls For Older Beauty Models

15 April 2009 5:10 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Italian actress Isabella Rossellini has called for a complete makeover in cosmetics advertising, insisting she has no desire to see a young model promoting wrinkle cream.

The Death Becomes Her star was dropped as the face of French beauty firm Lancome in 1992 - the same year she entered her 40s.

Rossellini was replaced with a younger model - despite having represented Lancome for 14 years.

And the beauty is convinced the move alienated the brand's older customers, who want to see women their own age featured in ad campaigns.

Rossellini says, "I understand advertising is about selling dreams but I'm not sure that women dream of staying young. I don't. I dream of being elegant and sophisticated.

"After Lancome let me go it took them some time to find a substitute. All research indicates that women were actually pleased to have somebody in her 40s advertising anti-ageing cream because a girl in her 20s doing so doesn't feel right.

"Ageism has put women in a situation where they feel uncomfortable with the idea of getting older."

Ryan Carnes is 'The Phantom'; Plus Costume Sketches

10 April 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | From CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news

According to The Hollywood Reporter Sci Fi (Syfy) Channel's The Phantom telemovie has cast four actors, including Doctor Who veteran Ryan Carnes — also known for Desperate Housewives — in the leading role, and Alias star Isabella Rossellini as the villain.

If the telefilm follows the established fable, Carnes will presumably star as Kit Walker, the 21st man to bear the mantle of The Phantom. Rossellini will play the guest-villain role of Lithia, who is overseeing a mind-control experiment.

Cameron Goodman (Mad Men) and Sandrine Holt (24) have also joined the cast in unspecified roles.

According to the trade, the network envisions this four-hour re-imagined Phantom as a potential series, but hasn't seen fit yet to give it the green light; obviously waiting to see how the telefilm performs.

In related news, a set of concept designs arrived online earlier this week, giving us at least a general sense of what the latest
