The top 10 worst movie threats faced by Texas

24 October 2011 4:06 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Movies haven't always been kind to Texas. "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" both showcased the warmhearted souls and hospitality that the Lone Star State is known for. Horror filmdom and Quentin Tarantino, however, almost as a rule tend to focus on the state's sinister side.

"Texas Killing Fields" -- now in theaters -- joins that tradition of fright and lawlessness this year, and it is no accident that the events of director Ami Canaan Mann's tale ended up being set in the rural bayous of Texas City. Despite the horrible series of killings that takes place there, the characters in the movie get off rather easy, considering everything that Texas has been through.

Here are ten of the worst things that filmmakers have thrown at Texans.

10. The Apollo 13 lunar mission, "Apollo 13" (1995)

Spoiler alert: Everything worked out in the end. Even if it hadn't, »

365 Days, 100 Films #58 - Event Horizon (1997)

4 October 2011 2:32 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Event Horizon, 1997.

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

Starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, Richard T. Jones, Jason Isaacs, Sean Pertwee, Jack Noseworthy and Noah Huntley.

Synopsis:

A missing spaceship, the Event Horizon, has mysteriously reappeared after seven years. A rescue crew go to search for survivors and to find out from where, exactly, has the ship returned.

It’s been about a week and a half since I watched Event Horizon. There’s still the occasional, terrifying flashback from it whenever I close my eyes. Some of the images must have been seared onto the backs of my eyelids. Google has not yet revealed the names of any group support sessions to treat this.

Sci-Fi and Horror make good bedfellows. Alien, Frankenstein, War of the Worlds – there’s a rich tradition there. Event Horizon is scarier than them all. It gets inside you - its cold darkness »

For the Love of Trailers - Hesher, Circumstance and Cinema Verite

11 May 2011 2:53 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

What to look forward to (or not) as Louise-Afzal Faerkel casts her eye over the trailers for upcoming releases Hesher, Circumstance and Cinema Verite...

So the royal wedding is over, the celebration of a resurrected Jesus (has he?) has taken place and it is back to work for all of us (bar the students and unemployed). This also means some of you may already have had the pleasure of seeing many of the latest trailers out there. But just in case you have not been so lucky, let me recommend (or disapprove of) a few examples...

Hesher

Directed by Spenser Susser.

Starring Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rainn Wilson, Devin Brochu and Piper Laurie.

Hesher has a good trailer. It does. It is very well put together, it is funny, it is compelling. Why the choice of such a straight and narrow, down-the-line manner of selling a movie? Perhaps this is »

Glee Recap: Rebels With All Their Flaws

27 April 2011 4:35 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Tuesday night’s 90-minute episode of Glee tackled more social issues, psychological disorders, and physical hangups than your average network drama would touch in an entire season. But that’s the beauty (and the frustration) of Ryan Murphy’s hyperactive teenage dramedy: It throws the entire pot of boiling plot-sta against the wall in the belief that most of it will stick, and eventually wind up as part of a delicious and filling (if not entirely healthy) meal.

Anyhow, if you happened to blasphemously spend your Tuesday doing something other than watching “Born This Way,” allow me to give you »

Blu-Ray Review: The Doors

19 April 2011 1:39 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Oliver Stone may forever be accused of making politically-interfering films, informed more by the director’s own sensibilities and ideological leanings than on actual fact, but in The Doors, he at least offered an appropriate- and appropriately pretentious- celebration of Jim Morrison‘s life, death and genius. This is not just a fluff piece or a vehicle simply for the kaleidoscopic music of The Doors, it is punctured and punctuated by a cautionary tale against the evils of celebrity and drugs, and as of this week it’s aiming to blow a few minds now on blu-ray.

The Doors is of course a sprawling biopic of the legend that was Jim Morrison, focusing on his childhood and college studies, his rise to fame and infamy with the band formed with fellow ex-ucla students Ray Manzarek (Kyle MacLachlan), Robby Krieger (Frank Whaley), and John Densmore (Kevin Dillon), and his untimely death »

Review: Elektra Luxx

25 March 2011 7:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Carla Gugino plays the titular Elektra Luxx, a retired porn superstar making a living teaching an adult sex-ed class ("How to act like a porn star in bed"). She's just found out she's pregnant and is having a really bad week. She's suffering an existential crisis, worried about how she can be a good mother and still explain to her child what she used to do for a living. Just as she's dealing with this, people begin appearing in her life, making her question who she is and who she wants to be.

The movie, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, looks like it would have been more suited to a playhouse stage than the silver screen. This, despite an impressive number of stars: Gugino, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kathleen Quinlan (Event Horizon, Apollo 13), Marley Shelton, Malin Ackerman, Timothy Olyphant, Justin Kirk and Julianne Moore. The dialogue, full of random non-sequiturs, »

Film Review: ‘Elektra Luxx’ Offers Middling Showcase For Carla Gugino

11 March 2011 7:44 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Sebastian Gutierrez is the sort of filmmaker who thrives best on the festival circuit. His work is just quirky and distinctive enough to garner overenthusiastic praise from jaded festival goers in the mood for markedly lighter fare. Yet when screened out of the celebratory atmosphere at SXSW, Gutierrez’s films fail to register as anything more than mediocre trifles.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Elektra Luxx” is a more assured and likable film than its lifeless predecessor, “Women in Trouble,” but it’s still nowhere near as funny or insightful (or sexy) as it thinks it is. Gutierrez seems to be fashioning these estrogen-fueled ensemble comedies after the work of cinema master Pedro Almodóvar. Imagine “Volver” as a sitcom on TV Land, and you’ll get an approximate idea of this picture’s playful, curiously amateurish tone. The gags are as broad as the drama is campy, yet what more can one expect »
