Hey, What's Coming Out in January 2010!?

28 December 2009 4:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By now you're surely sick of high-quality films. You're fed up with James Cameron and Squeakquels and year-end Oscar push movies. By this point you're itching for January, a movie month that only a true genre geek could enjoy. Or someone who loves the geeky risk of maybe seeing a really rotten flick. Yes, January offers that much and more!

Week 1

Daybreakers (Lionsgate) -- A nifty horror sci-fi mash-up that played Toronto and Fantastic Fest and played 'em well.

Leap Year (Universal) -- Amy Adams and Matthew Goode in a romantic comedy about romance. I'll rent it one day because Amy Adams is cute 'n' sexy.

Youth in Revolt (Weinstein) -- The Weinsteins still release films? Yes, but only ones that have been sitting on their shelf for over a year. In this one, an uncomfortable Michael Cera tries to woo a girl. (Oh, you've seen it already?)

Week 2

The Book of Eli »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Owen Gleiberman's 10 Best Movies of the Decade

25 December 2009 10:48 AM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

I confess, looking back, that I have no great generalizations to make about the movies that came along this decade. Except for this: There were more films of extraordinary and inspiring quality than I can count -- or include on this list. Without any trouble at all, I could easily have compiled a Top 100 list. Yet there's something about that magical arbitrary number 10 that focuses you, disciplines you, forces you to ask yourself what matters. Here, in order of preference, are the movies of the last 10 years that thrilled, moved, delighted, fascinated, and meant the most to this critic. They're »

Randy Quaid, wife arrested in Texas

20 December 2009 9:15 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Actor Randy Quaid was arrested on Sunday in Marfa, Texas, RadarOnline reports. His wife, Evi, was also taken into custody the day before. The pair has been absent from court hearings in Santa Barbara regarding fraud allegations they skipped out on a hotel bill. Randy, brother of actor Dennis Quaid (pictured), was reportedly arrested a day later because the Marfa Police Department did not have an active warrant for him when they took in his wife. Quaid has been moved to Hudspeth County jail for booking because Marfa does not have holding facilites. A bench warrant was issued for Evi and Randy on December 15. »

New Clips from Legion and Daybreakers

19 December 2009 7:43 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Guess what sci-fi/action/thriller fans? We’ve got a double dose of awesome for you today. That’s right, we’re bringing not one, but two clips for you to geek out over. No thanks needed, it’s our pleasure to serve.

The first clip comes from the Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid film, Legion. If you’ll recall from our previous coverage (including the Red Band trailer we shared back in August), Legion is the story of a diner full of people who attempt to fight off an apocalyptic army of angels sent by God to destroy humanity. Among the characters is the Archangel Michael (played by Bettany), who, for some reason which I hope the film will explain, decides to ignore God’s bidding and help save humanity instead. Dennis Quaid (looking craggier than ever) and Tyrese Gibson also star as two of the diner’s denizens »

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)

Paramount Plans Doc Holliday Film

17 December 2009 10:12 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Like a zombie that just won't stay down, the Western is looking to make another return. Paramount is betting that it can revive the genre as a Pirates Of The Caribbean-style tentpole franchise thanks to an action adventure pitch called The Further Adventures of Doc Holliday. There are no plot details yet, but with that name in the title, you know it will involve the legendary, tuberculosis-ridden gunslinger John Henry "Doc" Holliday, a man still best known for his friendship with fellow bullet-flinger Wyatt Earp and his involvement in the Gunfight at the Ok Corral. Many of you might also remember him from the likes of 1993's Tombstone, where Val Kilmer played him with typically quirky flare, or when Dennis Quaid took on the role in the following year's Wyatt Earp. He's certainly a juicy character for any Johnny Depp-alike character actor looking to make a studio breakthrough, and with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing, »

Rene Russo Reigns As A Goddess In 'Thor'

17 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

There are times when certain big name performers just seem to drop off the face of the earth... you hear their name a few years later and you instantly wonder "wow... whatever happened to them"?

One such name for me is Rene Russo  who we haven't seen on the big screen since 2005's "Yours, Mine and Ours" in which she appeared with Dennis Quaid.

Well, she's back in a big way.

It is being reported that Russo has landed the role of Frigga, wife of Odin in the upcoming comic book film "Thor " being directed by Kenneth Branagh.

The movie already sports an insanely impressive cast with the likes of Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins (who will play her husband Odin), Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Kat Dennings.

"Thor" is set to thunder into theaters May 20th 2011.

Peter Bradshaw on talking in films

16 December 2009 2:15 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

'When it's perfectly Ok to talk during a film'

Is it all right to talk during a film? Of course not! My personal rule is that, as the lights dim, the audience is allowed to conclude any discussions quickly in the faintest whisper. Then silence. But it's complicated. We'd all agree that it's Ok to respond to what is happening on the screen by crying or laughing. Angie Errigo, of Empire magazine, was sitting next to me once during a horror film. At one scary moment, she actually shouted: "Oh, No!" Angie is in a noble tradition. The New Yorker's legendary Pauline Kael would often get carried away during thrillers, crying out, "Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!" at increasing volume.

In press screenings, wisecracks are always acceptable. One film, I remember, was produced by a Us company with a classy, British-sounding name: Hyde Park Entertainment. When their logo flashed up – bafflingly featuring London's Tower Bridge, »

First Legion Clip

14 December 2009 4:59 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A few weeks ago I got to see about twenty minutes from Screen Gems upcoming movie Legion.  While I didn’t see enough footage to say if the final film is going to be worth our time, one of the clips they showed us was great, and it just so happens Screen Gems released a clip from the scene today.  Since I’d rather not spoil it, hit the jump and check it out.  But I will say it involves a grandma named Gladys…

If you enjoy the clip, watch the trailer further down the page as it has a bit more from the scene.

If you’re not familiar with Legion, it’s a supernatural action thriller where an out-of-the-way diner becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race.  When God loses faith in Mankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. »
