Why are we hooked on films about mass destruction?

18 June 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

As Independence Day: Resurgence explodes into cinemas – and obliterates most of London’s landmarks – it’s clear that the first instalment of the series 20 years ago changed the nature of summer blockbusters for ever

“They like to get the landmarks,” Jeff Goldblum in the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence. Not the most tactful comment, given that London is buried by an avalanche of alien debris two seconds later, but maybe Goldblum has seen the city demolished too often for it to bother him any more. Just this year Michael Fassbender levitated Tower Bridge into oblivion in X-Men: Apocalypse; in London Has Fallen, the rest of the capital took a battering; in GI Joe: Retaliation, Jonathan Pryce dropped a metal rod from an orbiting satellite right on to Westminster. Not that London is the only city to suffer such insensitive remodelling. The razing of national landmarks – to the accompaniment of a »

Menemsha’s 'Dough' hits $1m milestone

16 June 2016 4:43 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Exclusive: The feel-good hit starring Jonathan Pryce, Pauline Collins and Jerome Holder struck a blow for the limited distribution space as it crossed the threshold in North America on June 14.

Neil Friedman’s Santa Monica-based distributor opened Dough in nine theatres in Florida on February 12 and kept the film exclusively in the state until it expanded nationwide on April 29.

The Menemsha chief is confident it will exceed $1m by some margin. “The film is booked in cinemas for new openings in not-yet-released locales for the remainder of the summer months and is still selling out shows at the cinemas it is presently playing,” he said.

The comedy centres on the owner of an ailing Jewish bakery whose business flourishes when his young Muslim apprentice drops marijuana into the mixing dough. John Goldschmidt directed.

“These are troubling times we are living in today and everybody is looking to escape the every day realities of the world’s problems »

30 Best 'Game of Thrones' Villains

13 June 2016 5:38 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

The game of thrones may be dizzyingly complex, but there's one simple rule that still holds true: Like any competition, it requires people to root against. That's where the characters on our list of the HBO show's greatest villains come in. Sure, the story prefers to color its conflicts in shades of gray rather than black and white, but that doesn't stop it from boasting some of the best worst people the small screen has ever seen.

Some are complicated characters who've revealed both good and bad sides of themselves over time. »

‘Game of Thrones’ Recap: ‘The Broken Man’ Brings Back an Old Friend and Launches New Alliances

5 June 2016 8:33 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This post contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 6, Episode 7, titled, “The Broken Man.” To refresh your memory on where we left off, check out last week’s “Game of Thrones” recap.

Game of Thrones,” you are a cruel god. You bring us the delightful Ian McShane as Ray, the leader of a free group of people living in peace and building a simple country sept. The amiable Ray was highly entertaining as he dispensed simple wisdom and led a peaceful community not nearly as violent or as hard-drinking as the one located in Deadwood, S.D.

And then, “Game of Thrones,” you killed him. But it was hard not to see that coming. It wasn’t by chance that “The Broken Man” ended by focusing on two characters who were completely alone. This episode — like much of the rest of this saga — was about the building of strange alliances and uneasy but necessary coalitions. »

(Spoiler alert: Do not keep reading if you did not see this week’s episode of “Game of Thrones”) A new “Game of Thrones” theory could spell trouble for the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce). Viewers will recall last week that the pious leader of the Sparrows secured a powerful new alliance, as Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Margaery (Natalie Dormer) agreed to unite the crown and the faith for the good of the people. But has Margaery really found redemption through the gods or is she just playing the titular game? She’s never been one to sit back and weather abuse, »

Happy 15th Birthday, ‘Moulin Rouge!’

1 June 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It was 15 years ago today that Moulin Rouge! opened in theaters across the U.S. The opening followed a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and New York and Los Angeles premieres the month prior. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman made us all swoon with their charm and their palpable chemistry in the heartfelt, old-fashioned, tragic love story of Christian and Satine (very old-fashioned, in a sense — director Baz Luhrmann has said he drew from the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice in writing the film). The spectacular spectacular of Moulin Rogue! didn’t win over everybody — Luhrmann’s glitzy, dazzling style has been quite divisive over the years. But the film caught the attention of Oscars voters — it was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including wins for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. Beyond the technical categories, the film earned Kidman her first Oscar nomination, and with a Best Picture nomination, »

Game of Thrones Episode 6.6 Recap: Guess Who Is Back?

29 May 2016 11:52 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Episode 6 of Game of Thrones "Blood of My Blood", does not begin with Hodor miraculously alive. The gentle giant is dead, but did indeed hold the door long enough for Meera (Ellie Kendrick) and Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) to escape into the woods. Bran is still in the trance. He sees a montage of the events that led up to this point. The White Walkers are front and center, but we do get a glimpse of The Mad King and his stockpile of Wildfire in the vision. This has to be an important set up for the eventual showdown with The Night King. He wakes up as they are surrounded by the undead. Meera valiantly covers him; a masked rider swinging a mace of fire comes to their rescue. He pulls them unto his horse and they escape into the forest.

Game of Thrones Hodor Twist Is Different in the Book

After Season 5 of Game of Thrones ended last summer, fans were entering new territory, since the show had caught up with the books written by George R.R. Martin. Some had held out hope that the author would be able to release his sixth book, dubbed The Winds of Winter, before Season 6 debuted last month, but that never happened and it remains unclear when the author will be able to finish this novel. George R.R. Martin was recently in attendance at an event celebrating author Joe Hill's new book, where he revealed that a recent twist on the hit HBO TV series will be written differently in his upcoming sixth book. If you haven't caught up with this season quite yet, there will be Spoilers below so read on at your own risk.

Game of Thrones Showrunners Apologize for Hodor Twist

26 May 2016 9:25 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It's not often that those involved with HBO's hit fantasy series Game of Thrones apologize for what plays out on screen. In fact, it never happens, despite the constant deaths and heartbreak that happen every week. But this past Sunday's episode The Door was different. And for the first time ever, David Benioff and Dan Weiss felt an 'apology' was needed. Though, it might not exactly be the kind of heartfelt reparation you're looking for.

Emmy-winning writer-producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss used ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live to share their feelings on the death of beloved character Hodor. They sent in a special video message on Tuesday night. And it allows them to express their sincere regret, seeing that this latest episode certainly has had an impact. The hour ended with the unexpected demise of a fan-favorite, and some fans are still reeling. They explain why they certainly feel bad about it, »
