Sonia Saraiya’s 20 Best TV Shows of 2016

9 December 2016 10:03 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

2016 has been the year of the regnant half-hour. We are in the thrall of genre-defying 30-minute episodes, whether they are particularly brilliant broadcast sitcoms or cable and streaming comedies with the heart of independent film and the budget of prestige drama. Some are animated, some are auteur-driven; sometimes these shows boast sitcom joke structure, while others can barely be thought of to be funny at all. But whatever the case, they are all over this list — from premium cable, streaming services, the broadcast networks, and across the pond.

Dramas are a little bit less reliable. Peak television appears to suit nimble shows with a lot of room to adapt; dramas, with their longer runtimes and broader ambitions, are close to floundering. Many of the dramatic hours on my list aren’t even traditional dramas, but anthology series — a format that has stretched our definition of television even as it has proven irresistible to the viewing public.

Another episode, another priceless Kenny moment.

Kenny somehow manages to spice up every activity on The Real O'Neals, and this week is no different.

Exclusive: The Young Stars of 'The Real O'Neals,' 'Modern Family and More Reveal Halloween Memories

Et has an exclusive look at Tuesday's episode, in which Kenny (Noah Galvin) and his mom, Eileen (Martha Plimpton), hit the gym -- O'Neal style.

"Oh! They have a monthly unlimited plan! Do you think we should just go ahead and sign up for that right now?" a clearly entranced Kenny asks his mom as they enter the gym for the first time.

"No way! They're always a rip-off. Plus, we haven't even seen what it's like yet," Eileen reasons.

"I'm pretty sure I know what it's going to be like," Kenny replies as he enters the gym of his fantasy... eerily similar to the music video for Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical." Yup -- »

The Goonies 2: “I don’t think it’s going to happen”

Martha Plimpton on how the mooted Goonies sequel isn't getting any closer...

It looks like it might be time to finally call off The Goonies 2 hounds. They were unleashed a few years back, when director Richard Donner revealed that he and Steven Spielberg were considering a fresh sequel. Chris Columbus, who penned the original, was then back involved, but nothing really has been heard for a good year or two. Well, save for Corey Feldman throwing doubt on whether the film would ever happen.

Now, though, another of the original film’s stars, Martha Plimpton, has already expressed her doubts. In an ask me anything session at Reddit, she was asked about the sequel, and was pretty candid.

“I can tell you that I really wouldn’t expect it”, she wrote. »

Goonies 2 Is Probably Not Happening Says Martha Plimpton

15 November 2016 2:52 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After Corey Feldman pretty much confirmed that The Goonies 2 was dead in an exclusive interview with us this past summer, co-star Martha Plimpton has arrived to hammer another nail deep into the coffin. She doesn't believe the sequel to the hit 1985 family adventure will ever get off the ground. And she believes it's all been a ruse laid out by director Richard Donner to get back at the kids for being such a pain in the ass on set.

It certainly doesn't sound like the Goonies will ever ride again. Martha Plimpton, who stars in the ABC sitcom The Real O'Neals, recently conducted a Reddit Ama. One fan desperately wanted to know where the heck the Goonies sequel was. Plimpton, who played the nerdy Stef, and served as direct inspiration for Barb in Netflix's Stranger Things, decided to drop some pretty rough news. She explains.

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn Star in Beyoncé ‘Formation’ Parody Video — Watch

21 October 2016 1:07 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It would appear that Amy Schumer was thirsty for her own version of Beyoncé’s “Lemonade.” Schumer and Goldie Hawn have released a new video parodying “Lemonade’s” closing song “Formation,” Pitchfork reports.

The video, entitled “Get in Formation,” features Schumer and Hawn lip-syncing to Beyoncé’s “Formation” and performing a similarly provocative dance routine, though comparison of the pair’s moves to Beyoncés is probably a bit of a stretch. “Get in Formation,” which includes farm animals and a Chihuahua, is not the first “Formation” parody video, as Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden have also done similar versions. Schumer’s video is also reminiscent of Aziz Ansari and Eric Wareheim’s parody of Kanye West’s “Famous.”

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.

The actor: Though he’s the son of an actor (John Carradine), the brother of two notable actors (Robert and David Carradine), and a man with three kids—Martha Plimpton, Cade Carradine, and Sorel Carradine—who have all grown up to be actors, Keith Carradine originally had no plans to pursue the life of a thespian himself. Thankfully, he eventually succumbed to the inevitable and changed his mind, resulting in a long and prolific career which has seen him earning acclaim for his work in film (Nashville), television (Chiefs), and Broadway (The Will Rogers Follies), even making his way into the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 (“I’m Easy”).
