First Wave of Berlinale Titles Announced; ‘Flowers of War’ and New Herzog Documentary to Play

19 December 2011 8:59 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Now that the fall “awards festival” circuit is finally at a close — but with Sundance looming in the distance — it’s easy to forget about Biff — the Berlin International Film Festival, that is. (See, I even have to give the name.) This might have something to do with their less-than-huge lineup; in terms of films playing in competition, last year’s biggest art house title was The Turin Horse, while the most mainstream was probably Margin Call. Nothing too slim, but not much compared to Cannes, Venice, or Tiff.

The first round of titles to play this coming February (via Twitch) do carry a few major titles, though. Among them are The Flowers of War (which we were quite ecstatic about), Guy Maddin‘s Keyhole, Extremely Loud…, Kevin Macdonald‘s Bob Marley documentary, and an expansion of Werner Herzog‘s Into the Abyss. A few other foreign titles carry potential, »

First trailer for Guy Maddin’s gangster noir ‘Keyhole’

9 December 2011 6:06 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

One of the most distinctive filmmakers alive today arrived at Tiff this past September with one of the most divisive films of the fest. Canada’s very own Guy Maddin unveiled his latest, Keyhole, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey. The film had my colleagues divided, with some hailing it as his best work and others dismissing it altogether. We previously posted two clips, but now a trailer has arrived.

Synopsis: A gangster and deadbeat father, Ulysses Pick (Jason Patric), returns home after a long absence. He is toting two teenagers: a drowned girl, Denny, who has mysteriously returned to life; and a bound-and-gagged hostage, who is actually his own teenage son, Manners. Confused Ulysses doesn’t recognize his own son, but he feels with increasing conviction he must make an indoor odyssey from the back door of his home all the way up, one room at a time, to the »

‘Keyhole’ Trailer – Guy Maddin Tackles Homer and ‘The Odyssey’

9 December 2011 1:31 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After a low-key (because…) premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Guy Maddin‘s Keyhole is beginning to make its way toward a theatrical openinng. Although new trailer (via Twitch) doesn’t provide a release date for the Canadian feature, it’s still an effective-enough look at the film that should generate interest in more adventurous audiences.

A black and white, noir adaptation of Homer‘s The Odyssey that’s set in one house, Keyhole boasts an impressive cast that includes Jason Patric, Isabella Rossellini, Udo Kier, and Kevin McDonald. That eclectic lineup and fascinating concept would be enough to get me on board, but the preview sells the uniqueness of Maddin‘s latest work in just a couple of minutes. I only hope this hits a nearby art house theater in the near future; I think it’ll look great on a big screen.

Homer's Odyssey goes gangster in trailer for Guy Maddin's Keyhole

8 December 2011 9:25 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

How I do love Kids In The Hall comedian Kevin McDonald, but he's not the kicker here. The train of Homer's Odyssey derails into a hallucinatory gangster tale in Keyhole which stars Jason Patric who looks dapper as a gangster. It also has Isabella Rossellini and one of our personal favorites here at Qe, Udo Kier. Watch him wander through his house in classic Maddin black and white style and then watch a clip.

After reading a report on MTV.com, fanboys (and girld) kept their fingers crossed that the FX superhero series Powers, based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, would soon see the light of day after FX execs ordered a January re-shoot of the pilot to reportedly boost the show’s special effects. Jason Patric joined the show as Christian Walker, a cop who works and lives in a world where superpowers are common and he deals with crimes involving the superhero community. 'Powers' Television Pilot Sent Back For Reshoots

18 November 2011 2:34 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

FX and AMC networks are slugging it out for supremacy in the hip, new drama department. While AMC landed the increasingly popular "Walking Dead" adaptation, FX has set its sights on Brian Michael Bendis' "Powers," hoping the show might make a nice addition to popular programming like "Sons of Anarchy." News of a pilot in production broke a few months ago, but things have fallen silent since.

Now, it seems as though FX is sending the potential show's producers back to the drawing board, ordering the pilot to undergo a re-shoot.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Powers" was facing off with southern organized crime-family thriller "Outlaw Country," the premise of which reminds me quite a bit of another FX show, "Justified." Well, it seems the network decided to pass on "Outlaw Country," which means "Powers" is back in the limelight.

That is, if the Sony Television production team can »

FX Passes On Pilot ‘Outlaw Country’, Will Retool ‘Powers’

17 November 2011 5:01 PM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

FX has passed on its Nashville-set drama pilot Outlaw Country while keeping its other pilot, Powers, alive. Powers, based on the comic book of the same name, will undergo retooling and reshoots. The decision on Outlaw Country comes after it too went through tweaking and reshoots on the original pilot. The crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime and Nashville royalty starred Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes. It went through a long and arduous process: it was originally ordered to pilot in April 2010, which was filmed last fall and then put through reshoots this past April. In March, FX president John Landgraf indicated that he wanted to launch a new drama series this coming winter, with Outlaw Country and Powers as the main contenders. That won’t happen. Based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, »

Bad News as FX's Powers Will Undergo Redevelopment and Reshoots

17 November 2011 4:15 PM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Let me start by saying that lots of shows get retooled after their pilots have been shown to executives, so it's not the end of the line for FX's Powers. Although, it's not good news either. The pilot is used as a test to determine if the show should be picked up, and how many episodes to order. And when a retooling of a show is required that means some or all of the cast could be out the door. Or, it could be as simple as adding a character to change the dynamic of the show. As of right now the show has Jason Patric (Lost Boys)as the lead playing Detective Christian Walker. Playing the role of Walker’s new partner, Deena Pilgrim, is Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher, Dinner for Schmucks). And the girl in the pink dress in those T-Mobile commercials, Carly Foulkes, is playing the superhero, »

Watch Two Strange Clips From Guy Maddin’s ‘Keyhole’

10 November 2011 4:58 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

So Michael Fassbender isn’t the only male actor appearing i movies completely nude this year. Check out this very strange clip from Guy Maddin’s Keyhole (via Twitch). And if that ins’t enough, I’ve included a second clip for the film below. Keyhole had mixed reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival and a swarm of walkouts. Strangely, some of my colleagues who love Madden’s previous, work disliked Keyhole, while some of my other peers who are not usually fans, ended up liking it. Judge for yourself. Here are the clips.

Are you part of the regular cast if gets picked up? Yes, I am. If anybody doesn’t know Powers, look it up because it’s a wonderful comic by Brian Michael Bendis. Powers is basically a cop drama set in a world where people have powers. These people have different levels of powers. … I’m playing one of the very powerful ones. I play Zora. She’s lived for thousands of years. She’s very strong. Very badass. Doesn’t give an eff about anybody. She’s not trying to be liked by anybody. [It's a] very gritty pilot. Jason Patric’s in it. Vinnie Jones is in it. Lucy Punch is in it. We have some really, »

Alona Tal Previews Her Supernatural Return and Dean and Jo's Unresolved Feelings

14 October 2011 6:50 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Last time we saw hunter Jo Harvelle in Season 5 of Supernatural, she was sacrificing herself for the greater good as hellhounds descended upon her rigged-to-blow hideout. But in this week’s episode (Friday, 9/8c on The CW), Jo returns much more at peace, says her portrayer Alona Tal. It helps that she’s, you know, dead.

TVLine chatted with Tal about what brings Jo back to the Supernatural world (duh, Dean), her final moments pre-death — yes, we’re talking about that kiss! — and her buzzy new FX pilot Powers.

With Street Kings 2: Motor City out on DVD this week (review here), which stars Ray Liotta and Shawn Hatosy as a pair of detectives investigating a spate of cop killings, we thought we’d take a look at star Ray Liotta’s most memorable roles on both the big, and small screen. So here it is, our Top 10 most memorable Ray Liotta roles…

10) Turbulence

A film that makes the list purely because of the insane performances of everyone involved, none more so than Ray Liotta as Ryan Weaver a murderer who is part of a Christmas Eve transfer of prisoners on a transcontinental 747 commercial flight. Of course once the aircraft takes off Liotta and his motley crew hijack the plane, with only stewardess Terri Halloran (Lauren Holly) to stop them And land the plane!

9) Hannibal

Another Liotta flick that only makes the list beacuse of it’s sheer ridiculousness »

As the end of HBO’s Entourage has come and passed (pending possible movie adaptation plans), we are left with a huge void to fill in our TV viewing. However, why should the fun end with HBO’s decision to bring the series to an end? Let’s take an in-depth look at the fictitious films Vinny Chase participated in and let you decide which would have been the most wanted film!

Lets begin where it all started….

A Walk To Remember

Although we don’t get to see Vinny’s role in this movie is a large influence on his Aquaman participation was based on his onset romance with co-star Mandy Moore. This is our one and only film that is not fictitious and has actually come to fruition.  Vinny’s role was a small role.
