Say what you want about Supergirl: Being Super, but it’s giving the titular heroine some much needed exposure in the comic book realm outside of her in continuity title when she could certainly use it. After all, with a hit TV show airing in prime time, having more than one book for longtime and potentially new readers to take in is certainly anything but a bad idea.

As I alluded to a moment ago, this four-issue miniseries by way of writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Joelle Jones takes place outside of DC continuity proper and explores Kara’s formative years in greater detail than we’ve seen otherwise. Actually, I’d kind of liken it to Smallville, only with Kara in place of Clark. Granted we could’ve done without seeing her »

Trailer Watch: Elle Fanning Is a Transgender Teen Fighting to Transition in “3 Generations”

10 April 2017 8:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

“3 Generations”

The hardest part of my day is knowing everybody still sees me as a girl,” says Ray (Elle Fanning) in a new trailer for Gaby Dellal’s “3 Generations.” While Ray is part of a progressive family — he was raised by his mother, grandmother, and his grandmother’s partner in New York City — the transgender teen’s decision to transition is still met with some resistance. “Why can’t she just be a lesbian?” his grandmother Dolly (Susan Sarandon) asks. As his mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), is forced to remind her, Ray’s not a lesbian — he’s a boy.

Maggie supports Ray’s journey, but the single mom needs to track down his biological dad (Tate Donovan, “Damages”) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. “She’s a kid. What if she changes her mind?” Ray’s dad questions.

“About Ray” has been given an “R” rating by the MPAA. The Weinstein Company is challenging the classification. Dellal commented, “As a mother and a filmmaker, I want to speak to kids, to parents, and to grandparents everywhere in a common language of love and inclusion about a subject matter that is not only real and complicated, but one that is important and alive today. There are kids all over this country that are still too fearful to speak out and to step out; they’re too alone to fight, lacking the kinds of support that would let them feel free to be themselves,” she observed. “Our story wants to humanize this family experience, and to take the mystery out of the secrets. I hope the MPAA will reconsider this ‘R’ rating and encourage children to see this story and feel connected.”

The project has been met with mixed reactions since it was announced. While many are happy to see a film centered on a trans character, the fact that a cis-gender actress was cast for the role of a trans boy received a lot of criticism.

Dellal’s previous credits include “Angels Crest,” “On a Clear Day,” and “The Ride.” She co-wrote “3 Generations” with Nikole Beckwith (“Stockholm, Pennsylvania”). The film hits theaters May 19 and will open the Bentonville Film Festival May 2.

NBC’s head of movies and miniseries Quinn Taylor has departed the broadcast network and joined Atrium TV, a new venture from former Sony USA chief Howard Stringer and U.K. distributor Drg.

Taylor left NBC in January at the end of his contract, Variety has learned. The exec had joined the network in 2013 to restart its longform programming division, developing movies and miniseries.

“We loved working with Quinn at NBC,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke. “He’s a fantastic executive and will be a tremendous asset to Atrium TV.”

Taylor jumped to NBC from ABC, where he spent more than 15 years, at a time when the Peacock was struggling to establish new scripted series and was dependent almost exclusively on the ratings success of “The Voice” and “Sunday Night Football.” But in the years since, NBC has found its series-development footing with dramas such as “This Is Us,” “The »

Jennifer Aniston has located her next project – and it’s moving at a brisk clip.

Anne Fletcher (Hot Pursuit, 27 Dresses, The Proposal) is behind the lens, directing a script from Kristin Hahn. Aniston, meanwhile has reportedly landed the role of Rosie, a former beauty pageant queen who now runs the local Texas pageant.
