Spider-Man: Homecoming closing in on $600 million worldwide

2 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Spider-Man: Homecoming may be slipping down the box office charts, but the film is marching towards the $600 million mark at the global box office, with its domestic and international haul this weekend pushing the Marvel and Sony blockbuster to $571.7 million.

It hasn’t been completely plain sailing for the web-slinger; in its second weekend, Homecoming suffered a 61.3% drop domestically – the biggest weekend-to-weekend drop for any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s currently only the twelfth highest-grossing chapter of the McU behind Iron Man on $585.2 million, and the lowest grossing Spider-Man movie to date.

To avoid that distinction, it needs to pull in a further $137.3 million, although it is yet to open in several markets, including China and Japan.

Some early concept art for Spider-Man: Homecoming has surfaced online via Twitter, showing that Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man may not have been the only Avenger featuring alongside Tom Holland’s Spidey in the wall-crawler’s first solo McU outing, as Tony Stark was originally going to call in some help during the Staten Island Ferry sequence in the form of Vision and War Machine. Take a look at the concept art here and let us know in the comments below whether you’d have liked to see these characters making an appearance in the scene…

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened. »

Spider-Man: Homecoming almost featured the “With Great Power…” line

20 July 2017 7:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While Uncle Ben was entirely absent from Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man reboot, screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have revealed that an early draft of the script for Spider-Man: Homecoming would have featured a nod to Ben’s iconic “With great power comes great responsibility” line.

“At the end when Happy [Jon Favreau] is in the boy’s room in school we had him say, ‘Oh yeah, Tony wanted me to tell you, “With great power comes… something, I forgot,”‘” Goldstein tells Yahoo Movies. “It was a little too meta.”

Perhaps we’ll get to see Uncle Ben passing on his wisdom in a flashback in the sequel, which currently has director Jon Watts in talks to return.

Jon Watts in talks to direct Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel

19 July 2017 2:44 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

This probably won’t come as too much of a surprise given the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man: Homecoming, but THR is reporting that Jon Watts is now officially in talks with Marvel and Sony to return to the director’s chair for the as-yet-untitled sequel.

The Homecoming sequel is already earmarked for release on July 5th, 2019, meaning it will launch Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has previously revealed that Spidey is the perfect character to launch the next wave of Marvel movies, and that the plot will explore how Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is affected by the events of Avengers: Infinity War as he returns to high school for his junior year.

Watts had previously directed the horror film Clown and indie thriller Cop Car before making the leap to blockbusters with Homecoming.

‘We warn each other’: how casting-couch culture endures in Hollywood

17 July 2017 10:59 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Despite A-List actors speaking out, harassment is so rife in the film industry that a manifesto has been launched to stop women being propositioned at auditions. Can it work?

It seems every female actor of a certain status has perched uncomfortably on the casting couch at one time or another. Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, Alison Brie, Susan Sarandon and Emmy Rossum have all recalled creepy come-ons from powerful men that took place early in their careers. In an interview in March, Jane Fonda revealed that she had once been fired “because I wouldn’t sleep with my boss”; Zoe Kazan recently described sexual harassment from a producer: “He’d say, ‘Oh, it’s a joke, ha ha.’ But he was also paying my cheque and then watching me from the monitor as I made out with another actor.” Thandie Newton has a particularly horrifying story about how she was persuaded, »

Spider-Man: Homecoming screenwriters discuss original plan for The Vulture

17 July 2017 4:35 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Warning. Spider-Man: Homecoming spoilers follow…

Having originally been earmarked for Sam Raimi’s abandoned Spider-Man 4, Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. The Vulture, finally made his big screen debut this month in Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and chatting to Yahoo screenwriters Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have revealed how they originally envisioned their take on the character.

“Once we started talking about Vulture, it was clear that the version in the comics wouldn’t do, where he was this bald old man,” said Goldstein, revealing that they chose the Vulture from a possible 40 characters. “It just never felt terribly scary on film to us. So we thought, ‘All right, let’s make him more of a middle-aged guy.‘”

Daley went on to state that the original plan was to have the Vulture as a science teacher at Peter’s school: “He was still stealing from Damage Control, but »

Alan Cumming Wants to Make a Sequel to ‘The Anniversary Party’ and Play Unlikable Characters

13 July 2017 12:34 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

With his devilish smirk and playful demeanor, Alan Cumming has always been a charmer. Exuding an uncommon blend of boyishness and gravitas in high-profile roles like “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and “The Good Wife,” to his tour-de-force one-man “Macbeth” on Broadway, Cumming has built a reputation as one of the most versatile, provocative, and charismatic actors working today. Which is why it’s unsettling to see him play a character who is, as he put it, “kind of not very nice.”

The film is “After Louie,” and the role is Sam Cooper, a prickly visual artist who spends his days paying for sex with younger men and sifting through archival footage of a friend who died of AIDS. Based on the experiences of writer/director Vincent Gagliostro, Sam is one of the lucky few survivors who lived through the AIDS epidemic and came out the other side. »

Cream cleansers? Oh, no you don't. According to celeb aesthetician Vanessa Hernandez, your face wash could be thing that's standing in the way between clean pores and gunky ones. The skin-care pro, who calls Amber Valletta, Grey's Anatomy star Jessica Capshaw and even goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow as clients, says your creamy face wash is...well...skin deep. "At night to wash, I recommend a bubbly, foamy, gentle cleanser—no cream cleansers, no oil cleansers, because they don't really work," advised the pro. "Try using a cream cleanser. After drying your face with a towel, you'll see that you'll still have—if you're wearing makeup—stuff left over." »
