Egyptian Star Amr Waked Joins Sky’s Neil Jordan ‘Riviera’ TV Series (Exclusive)

23 September 2016 9:18 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Rome — Egyptian actor Amr Waked, his country’s biggest international star, has joined the cast of Neil Jordan’s “Riviera” as a French detective investigating the yacht explosion that precipitates the plot of the high-profile TV crime series.

Waked, who also played a French cop in Luc Besson’s “Lucy,” will play a detective named Delormes who is “trying to decipher a very complicated case,” the actor said. The show is being produced by London-based Archery Pictures for pan-European pay-tv network Sky.

Billionaire Constantine Clios is killed in the explosion, after which his new wife, Georgina, played by Julia Stiles, “is shocked to discover [that] the fortune that maintained his immaculate, ever-so-tasteful lifestyle is tainted with dishonesty, double-dealing, crime, and ultimately murder,” according to Sky’s press notes.

Riviera” is among the flagship titles in the pipeline of Sky’s Sky Atlantic network.

Review: "Romeo Is Bleeding" (1994); Twilight Time Limited Edition Blu-ray

By Todd Garbarini

I first became acquainted with director Peter Medak’s work in 1983 when I saw his 1980 masterwork The Changeling, one of the most frightening ghost stories shot in color. Also known for 1972’s The Ruling Class and 1990’s The Krays, Mr. Medak made the film noir Romeo is Bleeding, shot in 1992 and released on Friday, February 4, 1994. The film is told in an elliptical narrative fashion, starting with the end and going back in time to show us how the protagonist got to where he is. We first see Jack Grimaldi in a dilapidated diner, his voiceover indicative of a man full of regrets who is probably in the Witness Protection Program and forced to lead a life bereft of any true purpose or feeling. Once upon a time, he was a police officer in New York City and his partners are comprised of actors we know well today: »

2016 Emmy Contenders: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series

7 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Last year, Margo Martindale triumphed in this category with her turn on “The Americans,” a show that has been woefully underrepresented at the Emmys. While she could repeat this year, she will have to battle some fierce competitors in the form of previous winners.

Both Allison Janney [“Masters of Sex”] and Carrie Preston [“The Good Wife”] have won for their roles before. And several potential nominees are previous winners. Diana Rigg was previously nominated here for her work on “Game of Thrones”; she scored a win in 1997 for “Rebecca.” Ellen Burstyn [“House of Cards”] is an Emmy winner in this category for “Law & Order: Svu,” and has seven noms and two wins total. [Don’t forget Burstyn is beloved; she was famously nominated for her work in “Mrs. Harris,” which consisted of fewer than 20 seconds of screen time.]  Laurie Metcalf has three Emmys from “Roseanne,” but her work as the ex-wife of Louis C.K. in “Horace and Pete” is unlike anything we’ve seen her in before. Stockard Channing has won two Emmys, both in 2002, and could score a third for the final season of “The Good Wife. »

You won’t find it on the show’s IMDb page, but cocaine plays such a major role in HBO’s new ’70s drama Vinyl (premiering Feb. 14 at 9/8c) that its name ought to be wedged into the credits somewhere between Ray Romano and Olivia Wilde.
