Revenge Finale Thoughts and an Alias Comparison

Now that’s how you do a cliff-hanger and Revenge has left us with one humdinger of a finale with several twists to the story (for a full round up head here). The ultimate shocking moment is what Nolan (Gabriel Mann) has discovered in the evidence that would convict Conrad Grayson (Henry Czerny) of hiring someone to murder David Clarke (James Tupper). Warning spoilers ahead for Revenge and Alias.

The huge reveal is that Emily’s mother is still alive and is somehow involved in the overall conspiracy of the show. There is a certain Alias vibe to this and there are also shared characteristics between Emily and Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) that we will be exploring.

For most of the first season of Alias we were led to believe that Sydney Bristow's mother had died in a car crash; this wasn't the »

That 'Revenge' finale: My. Dear. God. Is [Spoiler] really a goner?

23 May 2012 8:25 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Revenge has packed more twists and turns into its first 22 episodes than the most winding Hamptons highway. But in the promotional build-up to tonight’s finale, “Reckoning,” ABC seemed to be setting the bar impossibly high with a series of ads touting it as “mind-blowing,”  ”earth-shattering,” and “unbelievable” among their more sedate superlatives. Now it seems like they were underselling it. “Reckoning” featured the deaths of possibly three major castmembers, one wholly unexpected return, a breakup, a showdown with über-villain The White-Haired Man, and a revelation about Emily’s parentage. But not the revelation about Emily’s parentage you thought you saw coming. »

14 May 2012 9:15 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Hawaii Five-0" seemingly reached an endpoint last week, when McGarrett finally got his hands on Wo Fat and watched a prison cell door close on his nemesis. But while McGarrett's quest ended up involving Kono as well, the final chapters of it didn't exactly engage the whole Five-0 team.

That was not the case with "Ua Hala" ("Death in the Family"), which presented everyone with huge stakes, from Danny's custody battle to what was on the other side of the door in Shelburne's hideout (more on that in a bit). But it was what happened to Chin Ho that really hit hard.

The case of the week involves a presumed-dead bank robber shooting and killing Chief Fryer (so long, Tom Sizemore), blowing a police building to smithereens and then shooting it out with the Five-0 team. The team traces a connection to imprisoned dirty cop Frank Delano, and we eventually »

The Films Of Sidney Lumet: A Retrospective

9 April 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It has been a year since Sidney Lumet passed away on April 9, 2011. Here is our retrospective on the legendary filmmaker to honor his memory. Originally published April 15, 2011.

Almost a week after the fact, we, like everyone that loves film, are still mourning the passing of the great American master Sidney Lumet, one of the true titans of cinema.

Lumet was never fancy. He never needed to be, as a master of blocking, economic camera movements and framing that empowered the emotion and or exact punctuation of a particular scene. First and foremost, as you’ve likely heard ad nauseum -- but hell, it’s true -- Lumet was a storyteller, and one that preferred his beloved New York to soundstages (though let's not romanticize it too much, he did his fair share of work on studio film sets too as most TV journeyman and early studio filmmakers did).

His directing career stretched well over 50 years, »
