5 Movies of 2010 That Should Have Been Awesome

31 December 2010 1:02 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

On the whole, I think the year of 2010 was fairly positive for film.  We saw plenty of great movies that made us visit the entire spectrum of emotions, and tell a powerful story (Black Swan, Inception, Scott Pilgrim, etc.) but unfortunately there were quite a few stinkers this year.  The saddest part about some of those movies, however, is that they were supposed to be great!  Some of the most hyped movies, failed.  While not all of them were terrible they failed to deliver on the expected level of excellence.

So instead of a standard best/worst of 2010 list, I've decided to compile a list of the movies this year that should have been awesome...but weren't.

Iron Man 2

This is one of the movies that falls into the the 'wasn't terrible' category.  Honestly, I really quite liked this movie (even though plenty of fans didn't), and I put »

2010 In Review: Phil’s Films of the Year

31 December 2010 4:19 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Well this is it. The end of 2010, and a last chance to look back on just what films made the year for me. There’s bound to be some surprises for some of you out there – although if you’ve been reading Blogomatic3000 for the past year you’ll no doubt have a good idea where this list is headed!

This list is compiled of all the cinematic releases of 2010, not the DVD or Blu-ray releases, you can check that list out here.

10) Machete

The type of film that has been long-missed in my house: a loud, gory, Ott, macho arse-kicking extravaganza that ticks all the good action movie boxes and isn’t afraid to be politically incorrect, sleazy, sexist and even racist! Compared to the glut of PG-13 rated PC action movies that we’ve seen on the big screen in recent years, this film is a breath of fresh air. »

Hangover 2 Stunt Driver in Coma

27 December 2010 7:39 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Misfortune has struck the production of Warner Bros. and Todd Phillips' The Hangover Part II which is currently shooting in and around Bangkok, Thailand.

As first reported by Australia's The Daily Telegraph, stunt driver Scott McLean of Queensland was injured during a stunt on December 17 and is currently in a coma. His car apparently collided with another vehicle, also driven by a stunt driver, at a high rate of speed.

Warner Bros. followed up the report by confirmed the second unit accident occurred near Bangkok between a car and a truck and that the driver involved was immediately taken to a hospital where he is receiving "advanced care."

The Hangover Part II stars the original's core drunken cast of Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha and Ed Helms with cameos by Liam Neeson and Bill Clinton at minimum. It hits theaters on May 26, 2011. »

Hangover 2 Stunt Man In Induced Coma After Stunt Goes Wrong

27 December 2010 6:01 PM, PST | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

While Todd Phillips' The Hangover was one of the pleasant surprises of 2009 - in that it was a comedy that was actually funny and then that the actually funny comedy was rewarded by becoming a huge financial success - the in-production sequel is proving to be rather troubled.

On a PR front there was, of course, the Mel Gibson cameo debacle that ended with members of the cast and crew simply refusing to work with the man and Gibson's prompt replacement by Liam Neeson.

And now, on a much more practical and substantial level there are the sever injuries suffered by stunt man Scott McLean while working on the film. While details are just coming out now the incident occurred on December 17th when McLean was leaning out the window of a moving truck when he was struck by an oncoming car. The car was a planned part of the stunt, »

“Hangover 2″ crash lands stuntman in Thai hospital

27 December 2010 7:57 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: We’re not going so far as to say the “Hangover 2” production is cursed – it’s certainly no “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” — but the sequel has had a fair share of problems since getting underway.

The latest involves stuntman Scott McLean, who currently is in a Thai hospital recovering from serious injuries after a high-speed stunt on the film’s set went wrong, according to the Daily Telegraph. Pop Eater goes one step further, reporting that McLean is “in a coma.”

The Telegraph reports that two cars “travelling at high speed crashed into each other in Bangkok as part of the stunt.”

“Hangover 2” made headlines earlier this year when Mel Gibson was tapped by director Todd Phillips to play a tattoo artist in a cameo, but an uproar from the cast and crew reportedly led to Gibson’s dismissal. He was replaced by Liam Neeson. »

Liam Neeson’s Muhammad comments anger conservatives Catholics (IrishCentral)

27 December 2010 3:31 AM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Right wing Catholics are  taking aim at Liam Neeson over comments he made about Aslan, the Lion character he plays in the movie of the Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S Lewis. Lewis, a devout Catholic also from Northern Ireland is a major hero figure for many conservative Catholics. Neeson has upset his supporters  by saying that Aslan not only represents Christ but also Muhamand Neeson stated "Aslan symbolizes a Christlike figure," ... "but he also symbolizes for me Muhammad, Buddha and all the great spiritual leaders and prophets over the centuries." William Oddie  the former editor of the Catholic Herald. calls Neeson's comment "a betrayal of Lewis' intention and a shameful distortion" of Lewis' work. Oddie stated "Aslan is clearly established from the very beginning of the [series] as a Christ figure. I can't believe that Liam Neeson is so stupid as not to know [this]." The best feature films of 2010

26 December 2010 11:23 PM, PST | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

David Fincher's "The Social Network"is emerging as the consensus choice as best film of 2010. Most of the critics' groups have sanctified it, and after its initial impact it has only grown it stature. I think it is an early observer of a trend in our society, where we have learned new ways of thinking of ourselves: As members of a demographic group, as part of a database, as figures in...a social network.

My best films list also appears on my main site, but I am posting it here on the blog so that you can comment on it. In response to the reader protests of recent years, I've returned to the time-honored tradition of ten films arranged in order from one to ten. After that, it's all alphabetical. The notion of objectively ordering works of art seems bizarre to me.

Here are the year's best feature films: »

Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

The A-Team Blu-ray Under $13 at Amazon

24 December 2010 7:01 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

If you're looking for a last minute Christmas Eve plan to come together then Amazon.com has the ticket.

Amazon has cut the price of The A-Team on Blu-ray starring Sharlto Copley, Bradley Cooper, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Liam Neeson down to $12.99 from up around $20 where it had been previously selling at. The disc came out just a few weeks and includes a new extended cut of the film not seen in theaters.

I can't tell if this is an Amazon Christmas-related deal or if this is the price The A-Team will be at going forward. Either way it's a pretty good deal.

8 Terrible Cinematic Birthdays

23 December 2010 9:25 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

I'm not one to toot my own horn, but my loyal readers here at Shadowlocked may be interested to know that today is my birthday. I'm not going to get into how old I am, but let's just say that I am now the atomic number of arsenic and leave this particular thread of conversation on that joyous note. Anyway, while initially deciding that I would take a day off from the chaotic party life that is Shadowlocked, the writing gnome in my mind took over and thought that the arrival of my birthday might be an enjoyable segway into a list of sorts.

Many movies have had a birthday party scene. Sometimes it's inconsequential filler and sometimes it's a key scene of foreshadowing or character development. Usually it is a festive occasion and a bonding moment between family and friends. But now and then, it's a clever tool for »

Blu-ray Review

The A-Team – Blu-ray

Directed by:Joe Carnahan

Cast: Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

Running Time: 1 hr 57 min

Rating: PG 13

Plot: A group of former Special Forces operatives led by Col. John “Hannibal” Smith (Liam Neeson) are framed for a crime they didn’t commit and put into a military prison. They break out and begin the search for the evidence that will clear their names.

Who’S It For? Action fans, of course, anyone who likes fluffy entertainment, and non-militant fans of the original TV series.

Movie: As I’ve stated previously, I’m a bit of an action movie wh#re: I usually can’t get enough and I’m not that picky. Therefore, you may have to take everything I say with a sizable grain of salt if you’re at all worried about strength of plot, plausibility, quality of the dialogue, »

Steven Spielberg: World War II Revisionist

23 December 2010 4:03 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With the acclaimed mini-series The Pacific released this year, Santosh Sandhu presents an updated look at the influence of World War II on filmmaker Steven Spielberg's body of work...

Steven Spielberg’s father was a pilot in World War II and his stories formed a strong part in his son’s upbringing. Spielberg began making movies at the age of 15 and even at this young age his films Fighter Squad (1959) and Escape to Nowhere (1962) used World War II as a backdrop. It seemed inevitable that when Spielberg became a major Hollywood player he would make films about this war. Despite coming from the Vietnam generation, Spielberg has constantly revisited World War II throughout his career.

Having suffered anti-Semitism as a teenager, Spielberg sympathised with the civil rights movement but never felt comfortable with his own generation. He had little time for the counter-cultural movement of the late 1960s. With regard to filmmaking, »

The A-team Blu-ray Review

23 December 2010 12:23 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

They don’t make action movies like they used to. Two decades ago, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jean-Claude Van Damme were movie stars. Now action movies are mostly event films, so they tend to deal with fantasy situations. Comic book heroes using superpowers, et cetera. Or in Stallone’s case, direct pleas of nostalgia. Where the standard action movie – something like Red or The Losers - is considered second tier material (both also based on comic books). Such may explain why Joe Carnahan’s massively entertaining The A-Team was not a hit. Starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and Sharlto Copley as the titular team – they are military vets who are set up for a crime they didn’t commit. Patrick Wilson and Jessica Biel also co-star. My review of the Blu-ray of The A-Team after the jump. The film opens as the four come together. Hannibal »
