Younger Interview: Darren Star and Debi Mazar on Letting Go of the Secret & More

24 September 2016 5:00 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

At the Atx Festival this summer, I had the privilege of sitting down with four different sets of couples who make up the wonderful talent behind Younger.

The first interview we're running is with series creator Darren star and one of the stars, Debi Mazar, who plays Maggie. It speaks for itself!

I hope you enjoy the conversation.

What was the genesis of Younger?

Darren: Well, it was originally a book that I found several years ago, and I was always really intrigued by the premise of a woman who left the workforce to have kids and raised a family and then, basically, 14 years later wanted to get back to work and found that doors were closed and she was too old. I knew women who had basically had that same experience in Hollywood. You know, after 12 years or even longer, you come back and find it's really tough...

Emmy Awards voting has never been more complicated, with more series than ever vying for those coveted few slots in 2016. And while the usual suspects will naturally get attention, it’s those hidden gems that tend to get buried in the stacks of “For Your Consideration” mailers. To cut through the clutter, Variety’s TV team has selected a few favorites that we think deserve your vote.

Starring Zach Galifianakis as “non-identical” twins Chip and Dale, Louie Anderson as their Costco obsessed mother, Christine, and 47-year-old acting novice Martha Kelly as the romantic lead, Martha, FX’s “Baskets” is not like any other comedy, or show, on television. The funny-sad serialized storytelling of showrunner Jonathan Krisel takes all of these characters on unexpected journeys full of emotional discoveries, pratfalls, bittersweet self-reflection and fart jokes. TV Land’s Younger Closes Second Season With Higher Ratings Than Ever

29 March 2016 8:50 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

If you still aren’t watching Younger, it’s time to get on board, and apparently a lot of people are. The second season finale aired recently, and managed the show’s best ratings.

That’s a good trick for a show these days, especially when it isn’t one that can manage an insane marketing budget. It’s all down to the writing with this one, and Sutton Foster‘s charm. When I initially reviewed Younger, I was impressed, but was a little nervous that the show might fall too hard for its own shtick. While the show obviously focuses on the inherent problems of keeping up the lie, it has managed to build characters worth watching without playing for ridiculous drama. The idea creates enough problems without trying to milk it, and the attention to dialog has been refreshing through two seasons.

If you don’t know who Debi Mazar, actress on the hit series Younger is, you’re clearly living under a rock. She’s been in Hollywood acting and doing her thing for decades. She’s been in some of the most famous movies around, and she even has her own cooking show with her husband on television. She is a star, and she’s not afraid to tell you that it takes hard work, dedication and a major ability to let things go and roll right off you if you plan on being successful. She’s good at that, and she’s also kind of awesome.

Younger Season 2 Review

7 January 2016 3:29 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

In season 1, Younger only got better as it went along. The fusion between creator Darren Star’s bubbly vision of New York, Sutton Foster’s implacable charisma, and some mouth-covering gags only built and built the longer protagonist Liza (Foster) kept up the charade of being a 26-year-old publishing assistant (her real identity: a 40-year-old divorcée). The show’s glitzy charm is still readily available for fans planning to tune in to the second season premiere this month and, better yet, Star doesn’t rest on his laurels the second time around.

The show immediately ups the ante by bringing home Liza’s daughter Caitlin (Tessa Albertson) from her time abroad in India. She packs herself into Maggie’s (Debi Mazar) aggressively rustic Brooklyn loft, and there’s some fun tension between Liza’s internal battle of divulging every secret to her daughter »
