24 March 2017 6:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

When The Good Wife spinoff was first announced, few could have predicted Sarah Steele's role in it.

Introduced as Eli Gold's outspoken daughter for a two-episode arc in season two of the original series, Steele returned for a major arc in season six when Marissa became Alicia's famed "body woman." Steele quickly became a fan-favorite and ultimately appeared in 22 episodes of the network drama. But since her scenes were almost exclusively with Julianna Margulies and Alan Cumming, a role in the Christine Baranski-led offshoot seemed unlikely.

Offscreen, Steele was busy as well, winning rave reviews in the Tony-winning Broadway »

The Weinstein Company 2017 Release Calendar: Here’s the Oscar Hopefuls, and the Damaged Goods

9 March 2017 9:29 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

May 2015 was the last time Harvey Weinstein hosted a Cannes presentation at the Majestic Hotel. Among the titles was a preview of Justin Chadwick’s “Tulip Fever,” with the then white-hot Swedish actress Alicia Vikander on hand. A romantic triangle period piece costarring Christoph Waltz and Dane DeHaan, Weinstein later pushed the release from July 2016 to February 2017. Now, two years later, it’s booked for August 25 — the dog days of summer.

Last year, the Weinstein Co. had so few bonafide Oscar contenders on the docket that they didn’t mount their usual Cannes show-and-tell at all. Garth Davis’s “Lion” did yield six nominations and, like critics’ darling “Carol” the year before, no wins. The lengthy awards season did pay off for “Lion” at the box office; it’s made $103 million worldwide. However, it also represents a rare tick in the ‘win’ column for TWC, which is struggling to maneuver in these challenging times. »

Producer-Director Brooke Kennedy on Challenges of Moving From ‘The Good Wife’ to ‘The Good Fight’

17 February 2017 9:51 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Brooke Kennedy has produced hundreds of hours of television, much of it in New York City. But of all her experiences in the trenches, nothing quite compares to directing the first episode of “The Good Fight” at a Park Avenue location on the night of Nov. 8, as Donald Trump pulled off his stunning political upset in the presidential race.

As Christine Baranski and Delroy Lindo got to work on a particularly emotional scene in “The Good Wife” spinoff — which premieres Sunday on CBS All Access — Kennedy looked out and saw the darkness around the edges of the office-building set flecked with the blue-ish glow of smartphone screens.

“Everyone in the crew was on their phones, and you could start to read it on everybody’s face,” Kennedy recalls.

As horrified as Kennedy was on a personal level (she’s no Donald Trump fan), her first instinct was to protect the actors from the news to allow them »

TV Review: ‘The Good Fight’ on CBS All Access

14 February 2017 12:42 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s appropriate that “The Good Fight” has a slightly more jagged and splintered atmosphere than “The Good Wife,” the long-running CBS drama that starred Julianna Margulies.

The Good Wife” debuted eight months after the inauguration of Barack Obama as America’s 44th president, and implicit in its worldview was the idea that a technocratic, centrist elite could solve almost every problem. Even in the midst of the thorniest cases, the show had a smooth assurance about how the world worked; undergirding its sprightly energy and acrobatic storytelling was a confidence that only rarely tipped into frustrating hubris. Watching smart lawyers enjoy their verbal jousting and engage in subtle but sexy flirting was often fun, and even when they lost cases — or messed up their love lives — they could safely retreat to an upscale bar to drink pinot noir and find solace in barbed irreverence and prickly friendships. No matter how badly things went for Alicia Florrick »
