Halloween 2017: Devil’s Night Double Feature – The Crow and House Of 1000 Corpses

  • DailyDead
[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]

In horror movies, things usually go so very wrong on October 31st when it comes to the Halloween-themed offerings of the genre. But what about the night before? October 30th, or “Devil’s Night”, can also bring about its own horrific consequences, which is the theme I went with when it came time to put together my double feature of Alex ProyasThe Crow and Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses. Both are coincidentally feature film debuts for each director, they feature killer soundtracks, and this pair of films is also centered around a storyline where the characters will never be the same after their experiences on the night before Halloween.

Based on the comic by James O'Barr, The Crow finds aspiring rock star Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) rising from the grave a year after his death to take revenge on the four thugs (David Patrick Kelly, Angel David,

10 Things About The Crow You Never Knew
The Crow was a massive hit when the comic book tale was eventually released in May, 1994, but sadly, its star was no longer here to witness its success. The Crow is a dark, brooding, gothic, action filled meditation on revenge, justice, love, and the afterlife, strengthened with bits of dark humor and a haunting performance by the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an on-set accident.

The Crow is remembered for Lee's brilliant portrayal of the movie's hero, musician Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to extract revenge on the Motor City thugs who murdered both him and his fianc&#233. A supernatural bird guides Draven through Detroit on Devil's Night, one year to the date after crime kingpin Top Dollar ordered his henchmen to kill the soon to be wed young couple. One by one, Eric makes his way through Tin Tin, Funboy, T-Bird, and Skank, until

Review: Benny Chan's Call of Heroes (2016)

Released recently in UK Cinema's, Call of Heroes (2016), proves to be one of the best recent Hong Kong action films released in the past few years, focusing more on good acting, excellent action sequences and as little CGI as possible. The majority of the film is set in a small town called Pucheng, which is policed by the town sheriff Yeung Hak-nan (Lau Ching Wan). Before we come to Pucheng we are informed that the Warlord Cao Ying’s crazed son, Cao Shaolun (Louis Koo) has been murdering villagers throughout the country causing Teacher Bai Ling and the children to flee to Pucheng. During this time we are introduced to Eddie Peng’s character Ma Fung, a drunken wanderer who ends up assisting Bai Ling and...

Film Review: ‘Call of Heroes’

A dauntless sheriff and a roving bladesman defend a city under siege in “Call of Heroes,” a solid, muscular action period film with an apt if overstated political allegory. Hong Kong action blockbuster director Benny Chan (“The White Storm”) gamely riffs on Westerns and samurai films, while Sammo Hung’s sinewy action choreography is a glorious throwback to the rustic vigor of Shaw Brothers films of the ’80s.Overseas buyers from multiple territories have responded favorably to “Call,” but its China opening hasn’t quite taken off. If anything, the lukewarm response confirms that mainland audiences either prefer contemporary subjects or like their period films larded with fantasy and visual effects. The film can be viewed as a 3D conversion in China.

The setting is China’s Warlord Era (1916-1928), when military strongmen commanding armies of thugs ran rampant in the north. Early on, warlord Cao Ying seizes Stone City,

Denise Richards: examining her recent straight-to-dvd movies

Kirsten Howard Jul 19, 2016

From Blonde And Blonder and You Stupid Man, through to Edmond: we go through the recent straight-to-dvd films of Denise Richards...

So far in this series of pieces that look at the straight-to-dvd or VOD movies of some of our favourite actors who have fallen on hard times, we’ve only looked at men (to date: Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Travolta). That’s because, mostly, actresses find themselves almost completely out of the game once they hit 30ish – an unnecessary full stop that a lot of us would like to see removed in the future.

Denise Richards, sadly, is no different. After marrying a man she found herself in an abusive relationship with, her career climb stumbled and she was forced back down into TV roles, where she’s currently still putting in the hours.

Richards had a sparkling, American Dream-like start in life.

Dark Side of Glitz Film Everlasting Making its World Premiere At London’s Crystal Palace International Film Festival

Anthony Stabley’s Everlasting (review) made quite the impression on us when we had the chance to catch the film prior to its upcoming world premiere. The film that deals with a young man telling the story of his girlfriend’s desire to be a model and her descent into the sometimes brutally emotional and devastatingly dangerous world that comes with it touched a nerve with me, and it was a film that really has the ability to latch onto you, making you think about it well after it’s over.

This coming week, on November 11th, Everlasting will be making its world premiere at London’s Crystal Palace International Film Festival and with an impressive cast that features Valentina de Angelis, Adam David, Elisabeth Rohm, Michael Massee, Robert Lasardo, Bai Ling, Molly Tarlov, Guinevere Turner, Yareli Arizmendi, Shayla Beesley, Cortney Palm, Kristina Ellery, Bernardo Pena, Mark Sherman and music from Crystal Castles,
