year in review part 5 of several
I thought it would be tasteless to drop this lump of coal on Christmas so I saved it one day. It's naughty, not nice. But before we get to the unsatisfying trends, performances, and movies of the year, some caveats. I didn't see everything and am not, generally speaking, paid to attend terrible movies. Even when I'm doing freelance gigs, nobody has ever said to me "Nathaniel, we'd love for you to write a 3,000 word essay about Yogi Bear." [Editors of the world take note: I would totally do this for money.]
Most Repetitive Actor or Actress Dear Leonardo DiCaprio, you have now done three movies in a row where you're a tortured soul with an emotionally unstable dead wife. This is an even more specific brick-wall niche then when Jodie Foster kept getting trapped in small places or when Julianne Moore kept losing her children (imaginary or otherwise).
DiCaprio's new franchise!
It's time to shake things up. »

Circle of Pain, 2010.
Directed by Daniel Zirilli.
When a friendly sparring session between an Mma champion and his best buddy goes horribly wrong, a ruthless promoter discovers a golden opportunity to set up a lucrative ‘dream clash’ between him and the fearsome new and undefeated title holder.
As something of an expert in action movies of all levels, I took up the challenge to watch and review Circle of Pain. My first impressions looking at the artwork, were that this would involve fighting and pain. True, and true! I was also under the impression that Kimbo Slice would be the star of the film as he takes centre stage on the cover. However by the time the credits were rolling, Kimbo, who for those who don’t know, is a Ufc fighter, had appeared briefly in two scenes. »

Fighting movies like Beatdown and Locked Down aspire to many not-so lofty things. Their target audience wants blood, bruises, and breasts with a soundtrack by bands who want to be the next Linkin Park. While Locked Down aspires to these goals, it is rare to see a fighting film that wants to be The Shawshank Redemption with kung fu. Locked Down is not likely to win awards anytime soon and I cannot really recommend it. However, I did not hate this movie which is much more than I expected.
In Locked Down, Danny (Tony Schiena) is an undercover cop who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Soon after he arrives in prison, he is recruited to the underground fight club where criminals fight to the death, run by boss Anton (Vinnie Jones) and Flores (Bai Ling). Danny’s cellmate Irving (Dave Fennoy) helps Danny train for the »

Image Entertainment will be releasing Deon Taylor's repetitive horror flick Chain Letter on DVD and Blu-Ray February 1st. An unrated version of the film will also be made available for viewers, on this date. Back in February of this year, this reviewer predicted that this film would be a flop (here). To use the latest technological device as the main substance of your plot will start sounding your film's death knell. The reviews are proving this premonition true.
Respected reviewer Scott Weinberg at Fearnet.com says of Chain Letter: "thus [the beginning of Chain Letter] began the inception of one of the silliest, stupidest, and most overtly inept copycat horror flicks in recent memory." A review by Michael Gingold also brings tales of non-terror: "Chain Letter's negligible terror" (Fangoria). It seems even the distributor (Image) did not want to support the title, as the release will only host a trailer as a special feature. »

.My mom said that there was more money in running whores than being one.. Love Ranch tells the tale of legalized prostitution in Nevada, but instead of focusing on the titillating aspects of it, the film looks behind the scenes at the misters and madams running the joint. Such is the tale of Grace and Charlie Bontempo. Charlie Bontempo (Joe Pesci) is the owner of the Love Ranch, a legalized brothel in the deserts of Nevada. Charlie may act the big man but it.s really his wife Grace (Helen Mirren) who keeps the hooker home fires burning by being a surrogate material figure to the girls (Bai Ling, Taryn Manning, Gina Gershon) who do the work. She puts »

As the American Film Market winds down there are only a couple films which can still be covered. One of these films is Spotlight Pictures' The Lazarus Papers. This picture is a supernatural thriller starring Bai Ling (The Crow), Danny Trejo (Machete) and Tommy Tiny Lister (Bone Dry). The film begins in Southeast Asia with an evil mercenary executing a local shaman (Trejo) without cause. A supernatural element enters, as Aroon, the shaman, awakens post-mortem. Is his journey now one of revenge or something deeper? Those interested in action thrillers can check out a new poster for this feature and an external trailer inside.
The synopsis for The Lazarus Papers:
"In the deep jungles of South East Asia a blood thirsty mercenary Sebastian, hunts for the thrill of the chase and victims to sell into slavery. In one operation he kills a peaceful local shaman Aroon, and his family. »

In the deep jungles of Southeast Asia, bloodthirsty mercenary Sebastian (Gary Daniels) hunts for the thrill of the chase and victims to sell into slavery. In one operation he kills a peaceful local shaman, Aroon (Danny Trejo), and his family. As Sebastian leaves with his catch, Aroon dies… only to come to life the next day. Something has happened to Aroon, a gift to some, but a curse to him – for he cannot die. Full of despair and unable to cope with life without his family, he attempts suicide. After each attempt he dies, only to be reborn the next morning. Trying to understand what prevents him from dying, »
Staying abreast of red carpet trends has yielded quite an eyeful lately. Seriously, the changing room at Victoria's Secret hasn't seen this much action. Elizabeth Hurley, Bai Ling and Sofia Vergara have all put the girls on display—spilling out of their respective outfits while they hit up events in London and L.A. seemingly without any sense of mammary modesty. Two-bit Bai is actually at a fashion show called Stop Staring! Sorry, we can't. Meanwhile, Liz spilled out of her fur vest at a private Elton John party. (If she was gonna club a baby seal, couldn't she have picked a bigger one to cover these up?!) And while we applaud Sofia for attending the 6th Annual Glsen (Gay, Lesbian, »
It’s that time of year again: when women of all ages dress up in as little clothes possible, paint some whiskers on their face and call their costume a “sexy cat.” While we’ve participated in our share of “Slutoweens” (dare we confess: we dressed as an actual prostitute for Halloween in 7th grade), celebrities just seem to nail the sexy-spooky look better than we normals ever could. Sure, we’ve tried to pull of the skanky mermaid costume for years now. But Mariah Carey will always do it better, you know? Mimi, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, CoCo, Selita Ebanks, Ashley Greene - all these ladies have sexed it up on October 31st, but only one can be awarded the crown for Sexiest Halloween Costume of All Time. We pick a winner below! 20. Heidi Klum 19. Ashley Greene 18. Jenny McCarthy 17. Monique Coleman 16. Paris Hilton 15. Briana Evigan 14. Carmen Electra 13. Lydia Hearst »

Betsy Russell talks Saw 3D and Chain Letter On October 29th, the seven-part horror anthology Saw comes to its rousing conclusion with the highly anticipated final chapter Saw 3D. Director Kevin Greutert is promising one of the craziest entries ever seen in this series, upping the ante tenfold with all new traps that will have even the toughest splatter junky cringing in his seat. It's going to be a gory mess, and a bloody good time that will have you covering your eyes for a good duration of the movie's runtime.
We recently caught up with series' star Betsy Russell, who has long-played Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) empathetic wife Jill Tuck. The recently released trailer promises us her demise, but is it all a ruse? We recently caught up with the lovely Ms. Russell to find out just what fans can expect when Saw 3D hits theaters this Halloween, and if this is, »

The careers of most Hollywood actors can be plotted along a bell curve: anonymity, attention, success, stardom, struggle, decline, anonymity. Most of the recognizable stars who've appeared in movies featured thus far in this straight-to-dvd column have been at the tail end of the bell curve. This week's a little different. We've got a movie starring a guy right on the cusp of a breakout: Boris Kodjoe, one of the leads of J.J. Abrams' new series, "Undercovers." That's fortunate timing indeed for the makers of "The Confidant," released to DVD just in time to take advantage of his increased exposure. And if the show takes off at all, he won't be making too many more movies like it. At least not until he gets to the other side of the bell curve.

Oscar winning English actress Dame Helen Mirren is best known for her portrayal of real-life, upper-class, women such as Sofya Tolstoy in The Last Station, Queen Elizabeth I in the HBO mini-series Elizabeth I and of course ... Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, for which she won her Academy Award. So it only makes sense that when her husband, acclaimed director Taylor Hackford (Ray, Proof of Life), decided to make a film loosely based on the true story of Nevada's first legal brothel entitled, Love Ranch opening in theaters on June 30th, that he would cast his wife, one of the worlds most regal and accomplished actresses, to play the brothel's Madame, right? In another stroke of casting genius, Hackford recruited none other than Oscar winning actor Joe Pesci (Goodfellas, Casino), who came out of his own self-imposed retirement to appear in the film, as Mirren's womanizing, brothel owning husband. »
Director Taylor Hackford.s Love Ranch opens its doors on Wednesday, June 30th, and M&C.s giving away a prize pack from the film that includes a poster from the film autographed by Helen Mirren, Taylor Hackford, Elise Neal, Taryn Manning, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Scout Taylor Compton, Bai Ling and writer Mark Jacobson. Love Ranch is a bittersweet love story that turns explosive when the players in a romantic triangle lose control and cross the line. Set in the late-1970s, depicting larger than life personalities living on the edge, Love Ranch stars Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci as Grace Bontempo and Charlie Bontempo, the husband and wife team who own and run Nevada.s first legalized brothel. Their lives are suddenly »
