Will Bai Ling Ever Get to Run The Gauntlet?

28 December 2009 12:05 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

One flick that's been poking around for the better part of two years is the new Bai Ling film, The Gauntlet, which was directed by Matt Eskandari. Though there is still no official word on when, or hell, If, we're ever going to see this flick, dozens of new stills have shown up online to get us all worked up. How we hate being teased.

We'll try our best to dig up some more on the flick, but the folks behind it are being scarily tight-lipped. In the interim check out the stills below by clicking on the image, and look for more whenever we get it.

Synopsis

In a sunken castle underneath the earth, six strangers wake. They have no food. No memory. No water. And no way out. These strangers are from every normal walk of life; yet, they each have a secret. They don't know it yet, »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Behind-the-Scenes Featurette for Daniel Zirilli’s Circle of Pain

9 November 2009 12:59 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Anyone who’s a fan of mixed martial arts shouldn’t have a hard time finding a movie on the subject these days. Even if you blow through your local video store’s entire selection, there’s plenty more on-deck for next year. Daniel Zirilli’s “Circle of Pain” is yet another entry into the increasing popular genre, and judging from the behind-the-scenes featurette courtesy of the dedicated ladies and gentlemen at MovieSet, this particular outing look promising. Seriously — no joke. You may understand once you’ve seen the clip provided below. Then again, maybe not. The film, which stars Tony Schiena, Dean Cain, Heath Herring, Louis Herthum, and Bai Ling, follows the adventures of a retired fighter and his journey back to glory. And while it certainly sounds like every other Mma-related movie currently on the market, none of them have Bai Ling And Kimbo Slice amongst their cast. »

Exclusive: Bai Ling on 'Gauntlet' and 'Confidant'

5 November 2009 6:00 PM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

A movie premiere just isn't a movie premiere without Bai Ling...  At this week's red carpet  for The Black Waters of Echo's Pond I chatted with the ubiquitous actress about her two upcoming thrillers, The Gauntlet and The Confidant. Read what she had to say after the jump. "Gauntlet was shot in China," she told me, "It's about six people who are lost, trapped underground, but they have to survive.  There's danger and they have lost their memory and they have to fight.  They become friends, but in the end they find out only one person has survived, so the test was to kill each other.  It's about human potential, human danger, what we are »

First official stills from subterranean thriller The Gauntlet starring Bai Ling

2 November 2009 10:44 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Somewhere, in an underground castle in China, six strangers awake with no memories. Yes, we seem to be getting a lot of these kinds of films lately, but Matt Eskandari's upcoming thriller, The Guantlet, looks like it might bring a little bit of extra mysticism to the survivalist horror genre.

When I looked up a little bit more about the project I found out that Eskandari and writer Adam Lawson were influenced, of course, by films like Saw, but also classic mysteries, like Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" about ten strangers who are lured to an Island by an unknown host.

Synopsis:

In a sunken castle underneath the earth, six strangers wake. They have no food. No memory. No water. And no way out. These strangers are from every normal walk of life, yet they each have a secret. They don't know it yet, but they're »

Bai Ling sex scenes

It's an almost comically slow news day here, so I'm going to point you in the direction of a non-news related item I found amusing today. Cinematical Seven: Bai Ling's Favorite Bai Ling Love Scenes

14 October 2009 8:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Chinese-American actress Bai Ling had her breakout role in 1997's Red Corner, a courtroom drama in which she defended Richard Gere from a corrupt government trial - romancing him, naturally, along the way. But since then, Ling has played a streak of bad girls and scantily-clad seductresses that put her equally-sensual public persona front and center, in films ranging from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to this year's Crank: High Voltage. Even in her latest film, the independent drama A Beautiful Life, Ling plays a stripper - albeit one with a heart of gold.

Some might argue that her career choices lean toward female objectification, and they wouldn't be wrong. But there's something wholly empowered about the way Bai Ling tackles her film roles. Sure, she's played her fair share of strippers, prostitutes, and femme fatales, but does it matter if she totally owns and embraces those characters »

A Beautiful Life

29 September 2009 3:58 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

A Beautiful Life, a film that I produced and co-wrote with Wendy Hammond, opens on October 2nd in limited release and stars Jesse Garcia, Angela Sarafyan, Bai Ling, Dana Delany, and Debi Mazar. The film deals with sexual abuse, love and violence. I'm not going to give the plot away except to say it ends with hope, which is why I spent so many years of my life trying to make it. I understand this story.  I, like Maggie, the main character, am a survivor.  I know what made her run and I understand what made her hide and search for a better existence.     My wish is for this film to contribute to the continuing dialogue of how to better prevent abuse, as well as to protect and understand the survivors of sexual abuse.   We need to know abuse occurs in many forms and many times a day all over this country. »

After making a name for himself at Cannes with his award-winning shorts, Nyu film grad Antonio Campos took his feature debut there last year. "Afterschool" earned its share of controversy during its festival run, along with as a Spirit Award nomination for best first feature. Reminiscent of Gus Van Sant and Michael Haneke, this hazy story of digital detachment blends viral video and prep school tragedy in its story of a paranoid internet junkie (Ezra Miller) who witnesses the death of a pair of classmates who overdose on drugs, and »

Mary Lambert directs Bai Ling in 3-D zombie mermaid horror 'Hydrophobia'

17 September 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Bloody Disgusting breaks the story that Mary Lambert (director of Pet Semetary I & II and The Attic) is directing a horror film called Hydrophobia - about a zombie mermaid (zombermaid, if you will) which stars... dum duhm dum... weird asian actress Bai Ling!

Still in development, actor Nathan Philips is rumoured to costar, according to Moviehole. The film has a Myspace Page, and website of cinematographer Michael Karp has a detailed page as well. Read the official synopsis!...

Official Synopsis: "Nick Bigman has a problem. He comes from a long line of surfers; his father was an amateur surfer, his grandfather Rod Bigman a surf champion who appeared in 1960's beach movies like Beach Bongo. Unfortunately, Nick suffers from Hydrophobia, an anxiety disorder that plagues many Americans who suffer from this extreme fear of the water. Crank: High Voltage DVD Review

16 September 2009 7:51 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Crank: High Voltage is a movie with a limited target audience. It is not for those who go to the theaters to make out with their dates. It is not for those who pop in a DVD to relax after a hard day’s labor. It is not for small children, those with heart conditions, or women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. And frankly, it’s vile enough that I would not be at all surprised to discover it were carcinogenic. But, like a pack of Marlboro Reds, it is not something without a certain charm and appeal. More after the jump:

Crank: High Voltage picks up just where the first film ended. Jason Statham’s Chev Chelios falls from a helicopter, bounces off a car, and lands face first in the center of Los Angeles. Seconds later he is, abducted by Chinese gangsters so that his organs »

Pet Sematary Director Developing a Case of Hydrophobia

16 September 2009 1:02 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Director Mary Lambert is leaving the Pet Sematary behind in lieu of some more oceanographic terrors. Seems she has developed a serious case of Hydrophobia, the title of a new chiller about a killer mermaid that can only be stopped by a man afraid of water. Think of it as the anti-Splash.

I hadn't heard anything about Hydrophobia until stumbling upon a blurb about it on Moviehole. They were reporting that Wolf Creek star Nathan Philips is rumored to be joining the cast opposite Bai Ling, who it seems will be playing the killer mermaid. Bai Ling as a murderous man-eating mermaid; I can totally see that. I can totally see that even without the mermaid aspect.

Scouring the Internet for further information, I ran across the film's MySpace page and the website of cinematographer Michael Karp, who I can only presume must be attached to the project since he »

2009 Vma Review: Defending Kanye, Loving Gaga and the New 'New Moon' Trailer

14 September 2009 4:30 AM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

When the new trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon is only the third most-talked about event from the MTV Video Music Awards, you know the show was great.  I tune in every year and have been severely disappointed for the last couple of VMAs.  Britney's "comeback" was a dud and the Jonas Brothers don't belong at an event like this.

But the 2009 VMAs were a breath of fresh air, with controversy courtesy of Kanye West, a swell of support and love for Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga stepping out and becoming the most awesomely crazy person in the entertainment industry, taking over the title from Bjork and Bai Ling. »

[DVD Review] Crank 2: High Voltage

8 September 2009 6:04 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

What is there to say to Crank 2: High Voltage? Those of you who have already seen it know what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t, the experience is roughly analogous to walking in on your kid using the neighbor’s cats to re-enact the civil war. You know, deep down, that you’re supposed to scold your kid, maybe get him psychiatric help, but your obligatory socially conscious reaction is undercut by two factors: a) it’s kind of hilarious, and b) you can't even begin to fathom why it happened in the first place.

Picking up several months after the events of the first film, the film opens with our dashing lead hero Chev Chelios (Jason Statham, who proves here that he can grunt and scowl his way through any role) falling out of an airplane and landing on the hard pavement of a city street. »
