Tribeca Film Review: ‘Whitney. “Can I Be Me”‘

28 April 2017 8:42 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Whitney. ‘Can I Be Me'” is Nick Broomfield’s documentary about the life and death of Whitney Houston, and it’s the rare Nick Broomfield movie in which the filmmaker isn’t center stage. He co-directed it with Rudi Dolezal, and there isn’t a single scene in which Broomfield, with his puckish, dogged delight in stalking interview subjects, invades a room tailed by a crew member holding a boom mike, thrusting himself into the face of Bobby Brown or Clive Davis or Whitney Houston’s relatives or the maid who cleaned her hotel room the night she died. I’m a fan of Broomfield’s conspiracy-theory music docs (“Biggie & Tupac,” “Kurt & Courtney”), but “Whitney: ‘Can I Be Me'” has no conspiracies to uncover. It just has a story to tell, and it does that incredibly compellingly.

I Never Could Stand Isabella Rossellini’s Accent

Do you ever have an famous actor or actress in your life that always rubbed you the wrong way?  For some reason there was this “thing” about them that you couldn’t stand and you could never, ever get over it.  For some people it might be the “blah” way that someone like Juliette Lewis talks.  For others it could be the irritating sound of Gilbert Gottfried’s voice.  You can’t explain your irritation but you just know it’s there and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.   That’s how I feel about Isabella Rossellini’s accent. I think she’s a great actress.

Kristen Stewart Covers "Elle"

Sneak Peek footage, plus images of "Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart, in "Elle" (UK) magazine, photographed by Kai Z Feng:

"...put two of Hollywood’s coolest characters in a room together and sparks are bound to fly. That’s exactly what happened when we tasked rockstar/actress Juliette Lewis to have a 'deep and meaningful' with her friend Kristen Stewart, one of the few young actresses working successfully across Hollywood blockbusters, high fashion and cultish Indie movies today.

"The results were predictably unpredictable with Lewis accusing Stewart, 20-years her junior of being 'a scrapper' and able to ‘throw a punch’.

"Stewart admitted she has 'no rhythm' but wishing she could 'tear shit up on the dance floor'. Then the pair discuss everything from the perils of social media, telling autograph hunters to 'fuck off' and maintaining true friends despite the pressures of fame.
