Film Review: Story Lets Down Chloe Grace Moretz in Stupid ‘Hick’

25 May 2012 12:37 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s understandable that people from the Southern or rural United States would criticize the general media. With films like “Hick,” which generally portray them as idiots or sociopathic, there is no balance or honest characterizations. Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne and Alec Baldwin add their take on it all.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

This is a strange and thoughtless film, with characters that meet each other one second, and become emotionally or too familiarly involved the next. It supposes that a 13-year old girl would get a gun for her birthday, and then hook up – Wizard of Oz-like – with a cast of stereotypes that will become her new family. Alec Baldwin plays a guy named Beau, which is all you need to know about the authenticity of this story.

Luli (Chloe Grace Moretz) is restless on her 13th birthday. Her main present is a handgun, and her parents (Juliette Lewis »

The Webby Awards' best five-word speeches -- plus Patton Oswalt's funniest quips

21 May 2012 6:30 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Why did the International Academy of the Digital Arts and Sciences choose Patton Oswalt to host this year’s 16th Annual Webby Awards? Oswalt has an inkling: “I look like the Internet personified,” he told an audience filled with celebrities, tech bigwigs, and humble entertainment journalists this afternoon. But Oswalt needn’t have been so self-deprecating. His jokes were uniformly well-received at Monday’s awards ceremony, especially when the comedian went off book. This, for example, is how Oswalt reacted after Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau accepted a statuette on behalf of Greenland.com: “I think winter just came! »

Hick

21 May 2012 2:53 PM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

There would seem to be plenty to get excited about in Derick Martini’s second feature film, Hick (based on the novel by Andrea Portes). If the plot is not especially enticing (a young girl from a hick town leaves home, travels West, and experiences the evils of the world), then the cast certainly garners attention. Chloë Grace Moretz takes the lead, playing alongside Juliette Lewis, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne and Alec Baldwin. Moretz and Redmayne each starred in two major pictures from last year (Hugo and My Week With Marilyn, respectively), and their pairing here certainly makes for an intriguing »

History books are filled with accounts of famous firsts — the first women’s rights convention, the first World War, the first man to walk on the moon. But who was the first Internet user to read a blog post, then scroll down to the comments section and furiously type a simple message: “First”? Comedian, Ratatouille star, and amateur fake historian Patton Oswalt may have just discovered the answer.

An Internet hero in his own right, Oswalt is hosting the 16th Annual Webby Awards next Monday. The following FunnyOrDie video, which dramatizes his quest to discover the first “First,” serves as »

The Firm: Cancelled, No Season Two?

12 May 2012 7:56 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

It's been a rough road for Mitch MicDeere. Now, it's come to an end -- at least on NBC. The Firm has been cancelled after one season of 22 episodes.

The Firm picks up years after the young attorney (Josh Lucas) made his deal with the mob to take his old crooked law firm down. He and his family have come out of hiding but their problems haven't gone away. The show also stars Molly Parker, Callum Keith Rennie, Juliette Lewis, Natasha Calis, Tricia Helfer, Martin Donovan, Shaun Majumder, and Paulino Nunes.

The series represented one of NBC's biggest launches of the season but it misfired right from the start. The two-hour premiere brought in a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 6.32 million viewers.

How 48 hours at large in La turned Fellini into a maestro

12 May 2012 4:18 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A new film will suggest what happened when director Federico Fellini vanished for two days in 1957

It is a cinematic mystery surrounding the disappearing act of one of the greatest names in the history of film.

A new movie is set to explore what may have happened when the celebrated Italian film director Federico Fellini disappeared for 48 hours on his first visit to America, where he was due to attend the Oscar awards.

Instead of a smooth trip to the 1957 ceremony, the man who was to make such classics as La Dolce Vita and 8½ almost missed the awards gala after going missing for two days somewhere in Los Angeles. Fellini Black and White, to be written and directed by Homeland producer Henry Bromell, and starring Brazilian actor Wagner Moura as Fellini, will suggest the film-maker fell under the spell of Hollywood and America in the 1950s and spent the two days discovering jazz, »

Juliette or Guilietta?

10 May 2012 8:33 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Have you heard that Juliette Lewis will be starring in a film called The Days of Mary (2013?) loosely based on Federico Fellini's Oscar-winning Nights of Cabiria (1957)? It feels like her first lead role in ages so we hope it actually happens.

poll by twiigs.com

It's now in Reno -- practically Rome's twin ! (kidding) -- and Juliette is a girl looking for love in, we presume, the wrong places. Bad things tend to happen in movies where Juliette is entangled romantically: mass murder (Nbk), end of times chaos (Strange Days), thumbsucking (Cape Fear) but this project doesn't feel as shocking / sacrilegious when you remember that Nights of Cabiria has already been reimagined once as Sweet Charity (1969) starring Shirley Maclaine.

Okay, wait, we need to remake reboot reimagine that poll now...

Review: Chloe Moretz Is Trapped In The Unclean, Clammy Coming-Of-Age Indie 'Hick'

8 May 2012 12:02 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Later, there will be a brief discussion of how literature is not film, and how some actions and themes do not survive translation from the page to the big screen because our mind can better deal with envisioning them than it can with actually seeing them. Before that though, I feel I have to pause and note that "Hick," adapting Andrea Portes' novel for the screen under the direction of Derick Martini ("Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire," "Lymelife"), is one of the most unclean and clammy films I've ever had to endure at a film festival. Not because it was incompetent and not because it deals with violent and sexual material but, rather, because it is both incompetent in general and even more incompetent specifically when it is concerned with violent and sexual material. We're supposed to be watching the cross-country adventures of 13-year-old Luli (Chloe Moretz, who »

Juliette Lewis Joins 'Nights of Cabiria' Remake Without Lee Daniels

8 May 2012 10:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Back in December of 2010, I was quite disgusted at the prospect of Precious director Lee Daniels taking on a remake of Federico Fellini's classic film Nights of Cabiria, the Italian 1957 film which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Thankfully, since Daniels has been busy with The Paperboy, and soon The Butler, and there hasn't been any word on development of the proposed remake over the past year and a half. But THR says, a different remake of the classic film is apparently in the works, and it's in much worse hands than the Best Director nominated filmmaker, and Juliette Lewis is slated to star in the film. Read on! Titled The Days of Mary, the film will be contemporary re-imagining of the original film which followed Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina as a wide-eyed, naive prostitute walking the streets of Rome as she looks for true love, »

• Arnold Schwarzenegger continues his streak of gritty action films, signing on to star in the thriller Ten, Open Road Films announced today. David Ayer (Street KingsEnd of Watch) will direct the script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, A Good Day to Die Hard), which follows a team of crooked DEA agents who start getting mysteriously executed after a dirty drug raid. Schwarzenegger’s role in the film is unclear, but we’re guessing it’s light on introspective soliloquies.

Juliette Lewis To Star In Film Based On Fellini's Nights Of Cabiria

7 May 2012 2:56 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With NBC's low-rated legal thriller The Firm moved from Thursdays to Saturdays back in February, cancellation for the TV sequel to John Grisham's popular novel seems eminent, if it's not already assumed. So it's not all that surprising to see one of its stars moving on to other projects. For Juliette Lewis, it's a starring role in a remake of an Oscar-winning film Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria debuted at Cannes in 1957 and follows a prostitute living in Rome, searching for love but only ever getting her heart broken. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film the following year. In 1966, it was turned into a stage musical, with Neil Simon writing the book and Bob Fosse directing/choreographing. Then in 1969 the play was made into a movie starring Shirley MacLaine. And now it looks like the original Nights of Cabiria screenplay will be revisited »

Yikes. We almost got away scot-free with no word for quite some time on Precious director Lee Daniels‘ planned remake of Federico Fellini‘s 1957 classic Nights of Cabiria. An update on the film is back to the frontburner, but from a different group of filmmakers.

Variety reports that Constellation Entertainment, the group behind Sabrina and Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Rainmaker, are now set to remake the film, and they have their star. Juliette Lewis will step into the shoes of Giulietta Masina‘s iconic character in the film titled The Days of Mary. She’ll be directed by producer Brad Michael Gilbert, who last worked on the Liam Neeson bomb After.Life and will be making his feature debut here.

If one switches out Rome for Reno, you still have the basic plot of the original, with a bright-eyed prostitue exploring the night life of the city. Gilbert stated, “he »
