‘Mindhunter’ Review: David Fincher’s Netflix Return Debates the Origins of Evil — And It’s Pretty Funny, Too

12 October 2017 12:01 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

It’s no spoiler to say the second episode of “Mindhunter” ends with “Psycho Killer” by the Talking Heads. And considering the focus of hour No. 2 was a serial killer who had sex with his victims’ heads, well, that’s a pretty funny way to wrap two scene-setting hours of television.

David Fincher’s return to Netflix, after putting its originals program on the map with “House of Cards,” isn’t as consistently uproarious as its second hour kicker implies, but the fictionalized story of criminal profiling’s birth does have a dark sense of humor to match its grim, academic nature. Fincher and creator Joe Penhall have crafted a markedly talky original series that shouldn’t work at all — not really. Through two of the first 10 episodes, it’s unclear what kind of long-term potential “Mindhunter” has beyond the morbidly fascinating conversations between analysts and murderers. But its mission is pure, »

22 September 2017 9:17 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

USA Network and Oxygen have cut a deal for the rerun rights to NBC’s “Chicago P.D.

The drama series hails from producer Dick Wolf’s prolific Wolf Entertainment banner based at Universal Television. The series is heading into its fifth season its NBC.

Chicago P.D.” is one of three Chicago-based procedurals that have become pillars of NBC’s primetime lineup. “Chicago Fire” launched the franchise in 2012, followed by “Chicago P.D.” in 2014 and “Chicago Med” in 2015. Last season, NBC fielded a fourth installment, the legal-themed “Chicago Justice,” but the show was not renewed for a second year.

Toronto Film Review: ‘My Days of Mercy’

8 September 2017 9:43 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A lesbian romance stretching across bitterly divided death-penalty political lines might sound like a recipe for case-pleading dramatic contrivance, but it’s handled with plausible restraint and delicacy in “My Days of Mercy,” Israeli director Tali Shalom-Ezer’s first U.S. feature.

Her acclaimed prior 2015 “Princess” was a disturbingly intimate portrait of unconventional domesticity edging toward quasi-incestuous abuse. It showed high promise, but there’s still a sense of surprise in how well Shalom-Ezer navigates the very different focus and milieu of Joe Barton’s astute screenplay here. Produced as a vehicle for co-starring friends Ellen Page and Kate Mara, “Mercy” serves them both well, with critical support likely to help the film find an audience despite its challenging themes.

The Moro family are first glimpsed on what appears to be a vacation, but in fact is something very different: driving their ancient Rv to yet another vigil amongst death-penalty foes (and advocates) outside a prison where »

“Moonlight” premiered at the Telluride Film Festival exactly one year ago, followed by a bow in Toronto before making history by winning Best Picture in one of the most exciting Academy Awards ceremonies of all time. While “Moonlight” may have opened more doors for black filmmakers than for queer ones, the film’s central themes of identity, masculinity, and sexuality were firmly rooted in queerness. It turns out, “Moonlight” was only the beginning, as queer cinephiles can look forward to a veritable feast of quality Lgbtq films coming out of the fall festival lineup, beginning with the Toronto International Film Festival.

A very gay-friendly city in an extremely gay-friendly country, Toronto will host some of the most anticipated queer films that have already made waves at Cannes and Sundance. Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” will play the festival before heading to New York, as well as this »

The Top Five Elias Koteas Movie Roles of his Career

Elias Koteas is one of the actors that you almost always see as a backup, a secondary or supporting role that is noticeable, but isn’t the star actor of the film. This is where he seems to shine though, as his personality seems to come out so much more when he’s not put on the spot. In some roles he’s been absolutely diabolical, while in others he’s been somewhat comical and even heroic.
