Don Johnson Accuses Germany of Hurting His Reputation

22 August 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

American actor Don Johnson's lawyer is poised to file a damages claim against the German Finance Ministry for hurting the actor's reputation. The former Miami Vice star, 53, was stopped for a routine check as he entered Germany from Switzerland last November with two other men. Officials found and photocopied documents listing transactions totaling $8 billion but didn't seize them. They allowed Johnson to continue his trip without formally questioning him. But the actor claims his reputation was damaged because his name was allegedly made public by officials at the ministry, which oversees customs authorities. Johnson, who has strongly denied any wrongdoing, insists the statements weren't his, but were from potential investors for a movie project. In May, German customs investigators said they had determined that the documents belonged to another person who had remained in Switzerland, and said no offense had been committed. German authorities never launched a formal investigation and consider the matter closed, they said. »

Johnson Denies $8 Billion Rap

14 March 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Miami Vice star Don Johnson has vigorously denied allegations he was stopped at the Swiss-German border after customs officials found $8 billion in his luggage. The 53-year-old Nash Bridges actor is protesting that the reports have caused "irreparable damage" to his reputation, and has had two bank accounts closed because of it. He rallies, "There is no truth to this story. It has no merit, no foundation. They have taken a routine incident and blown it up into this money laundering ring that supposedly I am involved in, and it has caused me unbelievable difficulty." Johnson claims he was leaving Zurich after a meeting with business associates about a film-financing project. He says, "They gave me some bank statements, some résumés, stuff like that to show they could perform as investors. My assistant had them in a briefcase." German authorities have stated they will know within a month whether they will proceed with a case against the former husband of Melanie Griffith. »

Johnson Denies Customs Rap

13 March 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Miami Vice actor Don Johnson's representative has denied his client was detained at the Swiss-German border after police reportedly found $8 billion in his luggage. Elliot Mintz has poured scorn on reports Johnson was stopped after German customs officials allegedly found the massive stash of shares, bonds, checks and credit notes in November - and are now looking to pursue a money- laundering case, according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Johnson's representative says that his client went through, "a routine border check by customs officials. After a few minutes, they waved the car on." He added, "He does travel with extra cash, but it is unlikely he would have an extra $8 billion. Don has done well for himself, but not that well. If he is under investigation, no one has contacted him." However, U.S. Customs and tax officials have reportedly been informed of the alleged incident by their German counterparts. »
