Maria Bello turns to a life of crime

24 December 2008 7:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

After too many years of playing second fiddle to other stars, Maria Bello is ending this year on a good note.

Bello just signed a deal with HBO to executive produce and star in a new, as-yet-untitled series. The story sounds familiar: A woman whose husband is killed begins a life of crime in order to support her family. She has three sons she uses as henchmen. I guess the family that kills together, chills together.

I’m not clear on how this concept is too different from Weeds, but I’m happy to see Bello in a lead role. She always seems to be somebody’s wife, although she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in The Cooler and Best Actress for A History of Violence. She also was on ER for a few seasons as Dr. Anna DelAmico.

Currently, Bello is in The Yellow Handkerchief »

Chicago – Paramount Home Video has scheduled two waves of catalog titles making their debut on Blu-Ray for the holiday season and the first set hits this week, just in time for you to finish up your Christmas shopping.

There are some recent comedy hits, a highly lauded drama from last year, and a forgotten Samuel L. Jackson movie. It’s hard to imagine anyone out there looking to buy all six of these titles and schedule a Blu-Ray marathon in their own home, but it’s also easy to see someone in your family having one on their holiday wish list. All films are presented in 1080p High-Definition Widescreen and feature English 5.1 Dolby True HD audio tracks.

Letting your Heart Stay on your Sleeve -- Dellamorte reviews Into The Wild on Blu-ray

16 December 2008 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

My father passed away in 2007. My father had been sick for a very long time, almost ten years. My father’s passing was both a relief and a pain. I found out via E-mail. My mother called me in the morning, but I didn’t get her message until I woke up fully and because I have an iPhone, checking e-mail generally happens moments before messages. Death - like that - is a weird thing. I spent the day at home baffled, drank, and took a nap after some time. When you’re faced with death, when it becomes real but isn’t, you don’t exactly know what to do. When I woke up from my nap I went to see Into the Wild, which had opened recently. Emile Hirsch plays Christopher McCandless. Chris was a college graduate with parents of a smothering nature. His father Walt (William Hurt »

For Your Consideration Corner

15 December 2008 1:00 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Glenn here again for another installment of For Your Consideration Corner. What movies are tapping my brain this week? All images sourced from Awards Daily unless otherwise noted.

Just earlier this week I discussed movies that come out of nowhere at this time of the year with misplaced hopes and dreams of Oscar. So, for this week's look at the For Your Consideration campaigns I thought I would take another trip towards this territory. Ads for these movies generally focus on specialty categories - your Best Animation Feature and acting categories mostly - because they know they're not getting anywhere near Best Picture.

One film that got my attention was The Yellow Handkerchief, which stars William Hurt and Maria Bello - a History of Violence reunion of sorts - that I had literally never heard of before. Not in festival lineups or anything, a rare thing indeed. I actually quite like the ads, »

Damages Season 2 Begins In January On FX

13 December 2008 8:24 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Damages season 2 is coming at us and we’d better strap in for this high-stakes litigation drama.

Starring Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Ted Danson & Tate Donovan, season two will add William Hurt and Timothy Olyphant to the star studded cast. (is that an oxymoron?). Damages has it all: Mystery, subterfuge, suspense and some confusion and it only gets better from there.

Season one was an insidious piece of quality story telling. When I pick up on new shows, it’s hard to miss the formulaic outlines of a scripted show. Damages took that scripted play book and apparently used it as a booster seat for someones child because they never even went there.

Last Season (One):

The show premiered with Ellen Parsons (Played by Rose Byrne) running through the streets covered in blood. This becomes an investigation of the murder of her fiancé, David, who was killed in their apartment. »

Such is the case with this "Damages" preview, which gives us glimpses of William Hurt, Ted Danson and Glenn Close in Season 2 of the FX show, which returns Jan. 7: And then there's this promo for "24's" new season, which begins Jan. 11. Discuss: Coolest Movie Presidents

4 November 2008 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I gotta keep this short because you shouldn't be in front of a computer right now unless you've already voted. And I haven't yet. But since we pride ourselves on being oh-so-timely and up-to-date with what's going on in the world, I offer this obvious discussion topic and then say "Go Truman."

So who are your favorite movie presidents? If you're stuck, here's a little game:

Eddie Albert, Jeff Bridges, Lloyd Bridges, Josh Brolin, James Caan, Ronny Cox, James Cromwell, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, James Garner, Kelsey Grammer, Bruce Greenwood, Gene Hackman, Dan Hedaya, Hal Holbrook, William Hurt, Perry King, Kevin Kline, Tiny Lister, Bob Newhart, Jack Nicholson, James Earl Jones, Leslie Nielsen, Donald Pleasance, Bill Pullman, Dennis Quaid, David Rasche, John Ritter, Tim Robbins, Cliff Robertson, Martin Sheen, Billy Bob Thornton, Jack Warden, Robin Williams

Name the movie in which those actors played the U.S. President. »

Incredible Hulk

"There once was an angry young man..." sounds like a fairy tale, but the rebooted Hulk got a huge leg up with the casting of the intense Edward Norton as the scientist who turns green with rage. This Hulk has narrative problems, but as a straight-ahead action picture it keeps a pretty good beat as it rocks along, and definitely benefits from Norton and Tim Roth as his nemesis; Liv Tyler and William Hurt also star. Scott examined all the features of the 3-disk Special Edition on DVD; also available in a single-disk DVD edition and on Blu-ray. Buy it.

DVD Review: The Incredible Hulk (2008)

19 October 2008 9:30 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

When Superman returned to movie screens in 2006 after a 19-year break, the film decided to offer a continuation of earlier events. Indeed, it went back even farther than its immediate predecessor, 1987.s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Superman Returns ignored Peace and 1983.s Superman III to extend the tale found in 1981.s Superman II.

On the other side of the spectrum, we find Marvel Comics. Hulk. The franchise made its big screen debut with 2003.s Hulk, the cinematic equivalent of a crash and burn. While the flick scored big with $62 million during its opening weekend, it garnered terrible word of mouth and immediately plunged to earth. After this huge launch, Hulk only made an additional $70 million as it wound up with a decidedly disappointing $132 million gross.

To the surprise of many, this relatively poor performance didn.t kill the franchise. Instead, the folks at Marvel and Universal decided to reboot the series. »
