Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards in full on Thursday, July 16. NBC's comedy series "30 Rock" led the pack with a total of 22 nods. The amount of nominations the show has received marks the most nods that a TV show has ever collected in history.
Beside scoring Best Actress in Comedy nomination for its leading actress Tina Fey, "30 Rock" also earned Best Actor in Comedy nomination for its leading actor, Alec Baldwin. Outstanding Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor in Comedy, as well as Best Supporting Actress in Comedy were some other nods that the show got. In addition to those, "30 Rock" brought Jennifer Aniston a gong for Outstanding Guest Actress In a Comedy Series, thanks to her guest starring role as Claire.
Also nabbing multiple nominations was "Mad Men." The AMC's drama series earned 16 nods all at once, just one count less than

The nominees for the 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning in Los Angeles by Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson, Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and Television Academy chair John Shaffner. Among the nominees were some past winners, some past nominees and a few who’ve never had the feeling of “Its just a thrill to be nominated.”
The real surprises were the nominations of both Family Guy and Flight of the Conchords in the “Outstanding Comedy” category, the nomination for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog in the “Outstanding Special Class – Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs” category (Say that three times fast) as well as the 22 nominations for 30 Rock, which is an Emmy record.
A rules change expanded the number of comedy, drama and key acting category nominees from five to six for which intensified the competition for those extra slots. Ties in the voting actually

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as

Since the EMMYs have 2,741 categories, we only focus on two things: first, how our favorite shows did and second, which big screen stars other than La Pfeiffer (she's always there with her television kingpin husband) will show up. Which of them got nominated for their small screen sojourns whether longform or more movie-like?
Speaking of which...
Drew Barrymore on the set of Going the Distance
Yes, you, Drew. But you knew she knew (everyone knew) that her affecting work in Grey Gardens as "Little Edie" was going to make the grade. "Big Edie" Jessica Lange also won a nomination for the narrative feature based on -- but also sort of jumping off from and commenting on -- the famous beloved documentary of the same name. I hope to have an interview with their director here soon.
Before we get to the rest of the big screen folks, here's the nominees

The nominees for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today in Los Angeles, and the show to garner the most nods was 30 Rock, which received a record 22 nominations for a comedy series. With the Emmys expanding their number of nominees from five to six in certain categories, some new shows were finally able to get some recognition, although a few big shows were still overlooked in their final seasons: most notably The Shield and Battlestar Galactica. There are a ton of categories so I only included some of the major nominees below. For the complete list visit the Emmy Awards official website [1]. What do you think of the nominees? Did any of your favourite shows get left out? What are the biggest oversights? 30 Rock rules the Emmy Nomination Roost this year with an astounding 22 nominations. I won't be able to look at a winged woman holding a giant atom without thinking of Tina Fey. On the drama side of things, Mad Men made it's mark with a whooping 16 noms, bringing its total to a ridiculous 32 nominations since it entered contention. To give you an idea of how awesome the Emmy folks think Mad Men is, it is the only show nominated for Outstanding Writing besides Lost, which snared a single nomination in the category. Now, for the major 2009 Emmy Nominations, and our reaction.

Chicago – The 61st Annual Emmy Nominations were announced today and there were a few surprises, a few disappointments, and a variety of unusual choices. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences displayed a desire to move forward with some first-time nominees, mostly ignoring some tired staples like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Desperate Housewives,” but also missed some arguably deserving choices.
The Best Drama and Best Comedy categories expanded to seven nominees this year, which allowed for a wide variety of networks to claim a “Best” nominee.

The nominees for Best Drama are “Big Love,” “Breaking Bad,” “Damages,” “Dexter,” “House,” “Lost,” and “Mad Men”. The refusal to give in to pressure to nominate the last season of “ER” is nice and its hard to argue with too many of their actual choices, but HBO’s great “In Treatment” needed to be in that seven and “True

Simon Baker is in. Anna Paquin is not. In today's Emmy nominations, Baker scored a Lead Actor in a Drama Series nod for his freshman hit, The Mentalist. He'll face off a familiar field: In Treatment's Gabriel Byrne, Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, Dexter's Michael C. Hall, Mad Men's Jon Hamm and House's Hugh Laurie. All five of those gents were nominated last year; Cranston is the defending champ. The corresponding Lead Actress race looks just as similar. Last year's winner, Damages' Glenn Close, is, like last year, up against Brothers & Sisters' Sally Field, Law & Order: Svu's Mariska Hargitay, Saving Grace's Holly Hunter and The Closer's Kyra...

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

Our Emmy prophets — forums moderators Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria, who also contribute to AwardsHeaven.net — agree on five of the six women who will vie for lead actress in a drama series. They both think returning champ Glenn Close ("Damages") will face off against 2007 winner Sally Field ("Brothers and Sisters"), three-time also ran Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer") and newcomers January Jones ("Mad Men") and Anna Paquin ("True Blood"). For the sixth slot, Rob – who went four for five right last year – opts for Oscar winner Holly Hunter returning to the race a second time for "Saving Grace." Boomer – who got all five nominees right last year – believes "Big Love" star Jeanne Tripplehorn will break through and land her first nod. Best Drama Series Actress

Streep at 60: We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competition. Previously 78, 79, 81, 82 and 83, 85, 87 and 88
I believe that Meryl Streep's film career can be divided into five chapters or acts (thus far).
Act I (Liberated Lady) 1977-1981Act II (Chamaeleonidae Erotica) 1981-1988Act III (Funny Lady) 1989-1992Act IV (???) 1993-2001Act V (The Great Entertainer) 2002-presentAfter the High Drama years it came as a shock to many when Meryl was suddenly making comedies. Some felt it was a career crisis and there was some backlash going on. This is possibly hard to comprehend for her new young fans but great success always leads to it and many people were sick of Streep's total dominance as the Eighties wound down. It was somewhat common wisdom at the time that her run at the top was ending, having turned 40 in 1989. Several younger stars were coming into their own

...oh, don't act like you don't speak of them often.
I don't think I'll be getting to "Best of the Aughts" until late this year or possibly March 2010 given what's sure to be a crazed Oscar season but I was looking over those old Actors & Actresses of the Aughts list (compiled to reflect 2000-2005 cinema) and realizing how much can change within four to five years of cinema. Halfway through this decade Meryl Streep hadn't yet reconquered the world, Christian Bale hadn't yet started alienating fans, Scarlett Johansson hadn't yet started boring people, Heath Ledger hadn't left us, Holly Hunter hadn't moved to the small screen, Jude Law's career hadn't receded, Maggie Cheung hadn't vanished...
Here's what the lists looked like in 2005

We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competitive field. Previously: 78, 79, 81, 82, 83 and 85
Meryl Streep's first act was the Liberated Lady. The second was The Chameleon in which Meryl was always the lead, always had new hair, voice and body language and basically controlled Oscar's Universe. It was as if there was only 4 spots for Best Actress, one reserved for her in perpetuity. This second act ended with her intense immersion into notorious dingo-hating Lindy Chamberlain in A Cry in the Dark. [Editor's Note: Yes, I'll do a top ten performance list when "Streep at 60" wraps in mid July. I've heard your requests and I've been rewatching all the movies.]
Starting in 1989 Act III of Streep's career began but we'll get to that shortly. First, let's look at her competition in the last two years of her legendary Act II.
