Time-Travel Comedy Future Man Lands At Hulu

12 September 2016 10:02 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Barring any potential spinoff movies further down the pipeline, Lionsgate’s lucrative Hunger Games saga wrapped up late last year forcing the citizens of Panem – Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence included – to venture out beyond the Ya tentpole to advance their acting careers.

Buoyed by scene-stealing turns in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, the latter got off to an award-winning flyer, which looks set to continue with the release of Passengers later this year. Elsewhere on Sony’s slate – specifically, its TV slate – we now have word that Josh Hutcherson’s Future Man has landed a series order at Hulu.

A half-hour sci-fi comedy by trade, we understand that Future Man‘s inaugural season spans 13 episodes in total, with a cast comprised of Eliza Coupe, Derek Wilson, Ed Begley Jr. and and Glenne Headly. Meanwhile, Sausage Party dream team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are on board to produce »

Calm down, 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' was already a remake of another movie

4 August 2016 2:35 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

As with any actor whose work I love, there are films that stand out as particularly great in the career of Steve Martin, and one of those films is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. There are many great things about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Michael Caine is a perfect foil for Martin, whose work as nascent con man Freddy Benson is inspired. Frank Oz does a terrific job of creating this romantic, beautiful French fantasyland where people are going to believe the incredible lies told by Freddy and Caine’s master bullshit artist Lawrence Jamieson. Glenne Headly gives one of her most nimble performances as Janet Colgate, the poor defenseless tourist who ends up targeted by Freddy and Lawrence. Ian McDiarmid, best known to the fanboy nation as Emperor Palpatine, is dry and deadly as Arthur, Lawrence’s manservant. Miles Goodman’s score is terrific, one of the great comedy scores of the ‘80s, »

TV Review: The Night Of "A Dark Crate"

25 July 2016 2:03 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Picking up where we left off in Rikers,  Nas (Riz Ahmed) is still dealing with his new surroundings and everything we know about jail. His response to the question “Do you fear for your life?” was pretty sad. Not knowing whether you should be scared, then getting back “good luck to you” isn’t very reassuring. An ocean of new scenarios washes over his face.

Detective Box’s (Bill Camp) talk with the arresting officers was information we already know. We know that Nas doesn’t look anything like the two hardened men Box points to as an example. And, we know that most jurors aren’t going to give them the same amount of doubt as they would Nas. During the press conference, Nas' heritage is brought up just enough to broach the question of any ties to "organizations." Well, if that doesn't do a good job of casting doubt, »

The Night Of Recap: And When He's Dissed... Oooh, Fire!

Well, that settles it. After this week’s installment of The Night Of, I’m swearing off even the most innocuous misdemeanors, like jaywalking or tossing a martini in the face of Ann Coulter.

From the opening images (rolls of barbed wire dotted with fluttering plastic bags) right through that closing shot of Naz’s cot engulfed in flames, I felt like I’d been completely immersed in the Rikers Island expeirence along with the wide-eyed college student indicted for a murder I’m pretty sure he didn’t commit.

Review: 'The Night Of' introduces a fan favorite from 'The Wire'

24 July 2016 7:01 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's The Night Of coming up just as soon as I can't think of any last-minute advice... "There's a whole separate judicial system in here, and you just been judged and juried." -Freddy At this stage of the story, The Night Of has essentially become two separate, but equally important, shows: a legal drama about the cops and lawyers working on opposite sides of Naz's prosecution, and a prison drama about Naz adjusting to his new life in jail at Rikers Island. But even as John Turturro and Riz Ahmed are playing the lead in their own mini-drama, the two halves are linked by the fact that Stone — like so many other characters this week — is fighting to protect Naz. Naz is wildly unprepared for incarceration, but he appears to have a guardian angel in Freddy, a disgraced former boxing champ played by the show's latest Ghost »

Review: 'The Night Of' is the great drama HBO very badly needs right now

5 July 2016 10:26 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

There's his name about a minute into the opening credits of The Night Of: James Gandolfini. That Gandolfini, who died three years ago, is still listed as an executive producer on the new HBO miniseries speaks to the deal he signed way back when he was going to co-star in the project (in a role now played by John Turturro), and to his role as one of the people championing it through development. It also evokes images of a time when HBO owned the Prestige TV game outright, benevolently renting space out to would-be challengers because its position was so strong. That was a long time ago, before the rise of Netflix and all the other Peak TV players, and before HBO skidded into its current rough patch. Executives keep leaving abruptly. Recent dramas have either failed outright (the expensive, star-laden Vinyl got unrenewed last month), imploded quickly (True »

Watch: First Trailer For Steve Zaillian's HBO Limited Series 'The Night Of' Starring John Turturro And Riz Ahmed

Last week, we dove into the recent troubles HBO has been having, but let's be clear: when all the cylinders are firing, they still have some of the best programming around. This summer, they're unveiling a limited series that looks like it could be a knockout. Screenwriter and director Steve Zaillian ("Moneyball," "Gangs Of New York," "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo") has gone behind the camera for "The Night Of" starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed, directing seven of the show's eight episodes (James Marsh of "The Theory Of Everything" fame, has helmed one episode). The exact plot details remain under wraps, but the drama will detail the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and the feral purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused await trial for felony crimes. First Trailer: HBO's "The Night Of" Series

18 April 2016 7:31 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Despite the various troubles at the network which have seen HBO struggling in the past year or two, when they put their minds to it they can still produce some of the best television around.

Today they've released the first trailer for "The Night Of," the network's attempts at those dark, gloomy, ultra serious season-long crime mystery drama serials that have been a staple of British and Scandinavian TV in recent years.

Created by "Moneyball" and Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" screenwriter Steve Zaillian, the eight episode project stars John Turturro and Riz Ahmed about a police investigation along with the legal proceedings and nasty purgatory that is Rikers Island where accused await trial. Zaillian helms all but one of the episodes, the last being tackled by "The Theory Of Everything" helmer James Marsh.

Harker’s Hits: Hollywood

There’s no such thing as quiet days in Hollywood. There’s always something happening and today is no exception, so let’s jump right into the fray!

• Oscar-winning legend Warren Beatty’s been keeping a fairly low profile since his wildly expensive Town & Country bombed 15 years ago. But apparently the lothario (long-rumored to be the subject of Carly Simon’s enduring hit “You’re So Vain”) is coming out of semi-retirement as news broke that his pet project based on the life of famed millionaire/movie producer/shut-in Howard Hughes will be released this fall. (He’s been working on this since the ’70s as writer, director, producer, and star.) What’s of more interest to me/us is that he also said he’s working on a sequel to his uber-stylish, three-time Oscar-winning comic-book adaptation Dick Tracy. No word on whether bold-name costars like Annette Bening, Al Pacino, »
