Time Machine: Best Picture Nominee Co-Star Timberlake on the Oscars' Red Carpet

1 May 2015 7:34 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Justin Timberlake on the Oscars' Red Carpet Justin Timberlake at the Academy Awards The Social Network actor Justin Timberlake arrives at the 83rd Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. At the ceremony, Timberlake and Black Swan actress Mila Kunis introduced the nominees – and eventual winners – in the animation categories. Throughout the proceedings, he pretended to be the elusive Banksy, whose Exit Through the Gift Shop was a Best Documentary Feature contender. The joke fell mostly flat, but Timberlake actually elicited some laughs when he imitated three-time Oscar-nominated veteran Kirk Douglas*, who mercilessly stretched the Best Supporting Actress announcement into what seemed like hours. Admittedly, Douglas was funny. (The winner in that particular category turned out to be Melissa Leo for David O. Russell's The Fighter.) As announced by the Justin Timberlake-Mila Kunis duo, the Best Animated Short Film was Shaun Tan »

The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced Monday that write/director/actor/Genius John Cameron Mitchell will receive a special Tony Award at the upcoming 69th annual presentation of stage honors. Mitchell had racked up Drama Desk and Obie Award nominations before he put the off-Broadway smash "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" into the world, but it was that bold musical about a transgender East German rock musician that came to define him. The production was revived in 2014 with none other than Neil Patrick Harris in the lead (he won a Tony, as did the revival), and Mitchell himself recently returned to the role for an eight-week stint. "John's return to 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' is one for the history books," American Theatre Wing President Heather Hitchens and Broadway League Executive Director Charlotte St. Martin said in a joint statement. The network might want extra promotion for their upcoming "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert. Hollywood & Broadway: Studios Rush to the Stage Despite Clashing Business Models

7 April 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When Hollywood merges with Broadway, there are always fender-benders.

Just ask Harvey Weinstein.

As the movie aficionado and awards maven steered “Finding Neverland,” his first venture as a lead theater producer, toward the Great White Way, eyebrows raised in his wake.

He switched press agents. He swapped out the lead actors. He entirely scrapped an earlier version of the musical with a different creative team. When in spring 2014, he landed a much-coveted spot for the show on the Tony Awards telecast, naysayers tut-tutted that the play hadn’t even begun performances out of town, much less confirmed its Broadway run. Besides, Jennifer Hudson, the star of the Tonys segment, wouldn’t even be appearing in the actual stage production.

“I was criticized for Jennifer,” Weinstein recalls. “But this song (‘Neverland’) has been downloaded a million times, and all over the world people now know ‘Finding Neverland.’ In the movie business, »

Saturday Night Live Recap: Will You Play With Us, Michael Keaton?

5 April 2015 10:33 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

After an incredible amount of Oscar season hype, there was a moment this year when it became difficult to separate Michael Keaton from Birdman. As he reminded us last night on SNL, though, Michael Keaton is so much more than that movie. The welcome lack of a Birdman sketch this episode may be the direct result of Neil Patrick Harris's groaner of a tribute to the "locked out in his underwear" scene during the Oscars. Or maybe Keaton is just itching to move on. Either way, instead of a scene from that movie, the lone callback to Keaton's filmography came during a wonderful monologue that gleefully celebrated his widely beloved earlier roles. But even with all the attendant baggage of expectations that comes with being Michael Keaton, the host proved he didn't have to coast on our appreciation for him.Over the course of the night, Keaton disappeared into »
