Of the many, many great things about Batman: Arkham City, hearing Mark Hamill’s lethal shriek as the Joker opposite Kevin Conroy’s commanding baritone as Batman was a welcome nostalgia bomb for anyone who spent their afternoons in the 1990s glued to Batman: The Animated Series.
To commemorate the release of the “Game of the Year” edition on May 29 — which includes all the game’s downloadable content plus the new level Harley Quinn’s Revenge — EW has an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Hamill and Conroy in action for a key scene from the game. And if it’s »

The Avengers: Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America With a cume of $463.35m after 18 days, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers has surpassed George Lucas’ Star Wars ($460.99m) at the domestic box office, thus officially becoming the fifth biggest blockbuster in history. By next weekend, The Avengers should surpass Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace ($474.54m) to become the fourth biggest domestic blockbuster in history. Impressive? Of course. Any way you look at it, The Avengers‘ box-office performance, whether in North America or abroad, has been phenomenal. The Disney / Marvel actioner has surpassed the expectations of most — if not all — prognosticators. Now, having said that, The Avengers is not a box-office phenomenon on a par with Star Wars. Not even close. Studio/media spin and p.r. b.s. aside, the true barometer of a movie’s success is how many tickets it has sold, »

After thirty years, three terrible prequels and acres of spin-off material, the "Star Wars" brand has been somewhat tarnished. The fans are still legion, but it's become harder and harder to get excited about the series, and the highlights drift further and further from memory. That being said, we'll always a place for the original trilogy in our hearts, and much of that comes down to the second (or fifth) installment, 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" Despite the success of the original, creator George Lucas seemed to have taken some of the criticism to heart, a took a back seat for the follow-up, handing over the directorial reins to his old film school professor Irvin Kershner ("The Eyes of Laura Mars," "The Flim-Flam Man") and hiring veteran screenwriter Leigh Brackett and bright young thing Lawrence Kasdan, who'd come to fame thanks to his as-yet-unmade scripts for "The Bodyguard" and "Continental Divide. »

“Why do you always have to try and save me? I could handle it on my own. Yeah, I admit I've gotten beaten before, but I won't always be on the receiving end, you hear that? You understand?” - Tetsuo (Akira)
Alright, I got a whole lotta nothing to do and an overwhelming urge to start on it, so let’s get through this, shall we? If you somehow failed to see Chronicle, the screenwriting debut of Max Landis, son of John, you missed a dime-a-dozen tale of “power corrupts” and a great deal of “what could’ve been.” It’s not to say the movie is bad, it’s really not - but having seen it in the theater, and now on Blu-ray, there’s actually very little to recommend.
Three teenagers in Seattle, Tetsuo (Dane DeHaan), Kaneda (Alex Russell) and Token (Michael B. Jordan) receive telekinetic powers whose »

The Empire in Leicester Square played host (alongside four other cinemas around the country) to the third annual British Independent Film Festival last weekend, and we were there to catch the world premiere of British high-octane horror Airborne on the Friday evening, as well as a trio of films screened the following day.
As the title suggests, the festival celebrates independent filmmaking and the choice of features this year represented an encouraging mix of genres (the full list of films can be found on the festival’s website.)
Boasting a number of familiar faces from popular genre films of the past (including ‘Last Crusade’ villain Julian Glover and a certain farm boy-turned Jedi Knight) Airborne follows a group of misfit passengers on a night flight to New York who get more than they bargained for during their stormy journey.
A number of stars from the film were in attendance on the Friday, »

A day doesn't go by without someone unearthing a set of rare behind-the-scenes Star Wars photos, showing us glimpses of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher smiling, laughing and just plain clowning around. Many of these images are beginning to surface once again in advance of Star Wars Celebration VI later this August in Orlando, Florida, which is a four-day celebration of all things Star Wars. Many of these images also appear in J.W. Rinzler's book, Making of The Empire Strikes Back, which you can snag over at Amazon. In writing about the event and book, The Daily Mail posted a bunch of said images, including this random one from the set of Return of the Jedi. We don't remember seeing this image go around a ton -- and if it has, we apologize for the...

As you might imagine, studios are combing their libraries to find related items to reissue to tie in with the frenzy surrounding the May 3 opening of The Avengers. Coming Tuesday are two more discs that come closest to the feature film, a sextet of Marvel Animation films in two sets. Making their Blu-ray debut, the first set is Ultimate Avengers Movie Collection which contains the two animated films based on the successful Ultimates comic, along with the bonus film Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. The other Blu-ray set is merely dubbed Marvel Animated Features and contains Planet Hulk, Invincible Iron Man, and Doctor Strange.
Both Ultimate films pretty closely follow the initial Ultimates arcs from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch although the script is better at aping Millar than the animation is following Hitch’s naturalistic style. A significant change is that Tony Stark’s identity remains a secret and »

Dear Robert Pattinson,
I must say I never thought I'd see the day. Let me just start things off by saying until now, I've only known you as the twinkly Edward Cullen, who made me put my foot down and wipe the Twilight movie from my memory with a simple "Hang on tight spider monkey". It was you that put me to sleep as my girlfriend nearly wept at your performance in Water For Elephants, and has since continued to pressure me to watch Remember Me. Perhaps the final straw came at the very start though, when you played the same bastard who collapsed the possibility of Harry Potter ever bagging Cho Chang. You may not know me Mr. Pattinson, but rest assured, I know you.
Despite my grievances, anger, and blind rage at my woman's lust for you...dammit I respect you. I just saw the trailer for Cosmopolis »

If Jesus or Tupac ever finally return like we’ve all been saying they will, they should probably do it in a Judd Apatow film or something like that. We love cameos, don’t we? It’s especially delightful when it’s extremely unexpected, and of course extra points if they are playing themselves – or better yet some kind of silly version of themselves. It’s all about recognizing the kind of person you are perceived to be, and then playing off that in a way that makes the audience realize that you are in on the joke. If a celebrity is able to do that, it’s instant coolness. 12. Mark Hamill as Mark Hamill in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back It takes a very special kind of person to don a spiky wig, giant fist, black cape, and the title Cocknocker. Considering that this film had so many cameos that Kevin Smith actually had to »

The late Heath Ledger really created one of the most chilling performances ever as The Joker, a truly unique and original takes on a character we've seen many times before (but for my money the definitive Joker is still the Mark Hamill version from the Batman animated series and recent computer games), and one of the many strong points Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight had going for it. When it was announced that Tom Hardy's Bane, a once serious threat for the Dark Knight in the comic books but now relegated to B-list status villainy, would be facing off against Batman in the sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, it was taken as a given that comparisons would be made between him and Heath Ledger's psychotic clown. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hardy himself compares the two villains, promising a very different threat for Christian Bale's Batman this time round, »

DVD Playhouse—April 2012
By Allen Gardner
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan, »

Mark Millar is probably comicdom’s biggest crossover success story at the moment. His book Kick-Ass was adapted into a cult hit movie, and was also the likely inspiration for “real life superheroes” like Seattle crime-fighting dork Phoenix Jones. Another Millar book, Wanted, was a major hit that was raped and savaged by Hollywood and set up as another piece of posture fodder to help further Angelina Jolie’s continued sidejob as action superstar.
Dave Gibbons has worked with his share of comic book legends, among them Alan Moore and a still somewhat sane Frank Miller, back in the ’80s and ’90s. His work on Watchmen is the obvious key reference point on his C.V.
A collaboration between these two heavies holds some appeal for most people who are into drawings accompanied by words within the confines of colorful squares. So if you’re looking to get a gander of their new book, »
