Before the senators of Alpha House return for their mid-season elections next month, brush up on where the four roommates left off last year – and see why TV Guide’s Matt Roush called the show a “bawdy, brazen comedy” by a “master of satire” (that would be Doonesbury and Alpha House creator Garry Trudeau).
You can watch the entire first season with the just-released DVD, and see why it was one of the top shows on Amazon Prime last year. It’s a can’t-miss for fans of John Goodman, Trudeau and Amy Sedaris — or anyone who likes their politics purposely funny.
And stay tuned for the show’s second season – returning next month on Amazon Prime Instant Video – just in time for actual mid-season campaign finales. »

The Oscar race is in full swing now that the Telluride, Venice and Toronto Film Festivals are coming to a close and for those of you that may be interested, I'll be chatting Toronto and the Oscar race this afternoon around 1:30 Pm Pst on Huffington Post Live with Jeff Wells from Hollywood Elsewhere and Anne Thompson from Indiewire as things are starting to shape up in terms of the Oscar race, though this is looking like it could be a particularly volatile year. In terms of updating predictions, I'm going to begin with the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor races, neither of which I have really given much attention just yet and the Supporting Actor charts I haven't touched since first opening the doors back in early August. So how much have things changedc Well, quite a bit and not so much depending on how you look at it. »

Louis C.K has reportedly been cast in the upcoming Dalton Trumbo biopic.
Trumbo's titular character was arrested for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the Red Scare.
Despite being blacklisted from Hollywood, Trumbo would go on to win two Oscars under different pseudonyms.
Louis C.K. will play fellow screenwriter Arlen Hird, who was also blacklisted and would fall on hard times.
We hate to say it, but with certain Hollywood gossip mongers otherwise indisposed at the moment... toldja? A few days ago, we were discussing potential dark horses for the Oscar race, and one of the films we particularly highlighted was "The Gambler," Rupert Wyatt's remake of James Toback's 1974 James Caan vehicle about a college professor with the titular addiction. Penned by Academy Award-winning "The Departed" scribe William Monahan, it now stars Mark Wahlberg, Brie Larson, Jessica Lange and John Goodman. The film was, heretofore, absent from the festival circuit and without a release date, but Paramount has just made their intentions known, announcing via Variety that the film will compete in the awards season this year, opening in limited release on December 19th, before expanding wider on New Year's Day, a similar pattern to the one that Wahlberg's "Lone Survivor" took last year. That film didn't ultimately do »

I guess it was news that "The Gambler" was getting a limited release in December to qualify for awards. This has been in the cards for a while now. Maybe it was all about settling on a date (or even some soul-searching at Paramount, which will be releasing a bunch of movies over a six-month stretch). The date: Dec. 16. The film is a remake of the 1974 James Caan drama with Mark Wahlberg in the lead. Wahlberg is pretty important to the studio as of late, anchoring the billion-dollar blockbuster "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and whatnot. He dropped a significant amount of weight for the role and could certainly become part of an already over-stuffed Best Actor converstion. But the way I hear it, John Goodman is someone to at least pay attention to in supporting, too. So take all that for what it's worth in early September. The film was »

Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren visited Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens yesterday to film a cameo for the second season of Alpha House, Amazon's political comedy created by Doonesbury's Garry Trudeau. And while Warren's certainly no stranger to television appearances, this marks her debut as an actress. (Though she's pretty much playing herself.) In her scene, she crosses paths with Senator Gil John Biggs (star John Goodman) in the green room for CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper. She’s signing copies of her (real-life) book, A Fighting Chance, for a fan and also signs one for him, with a sly note that she’s not going to be running for president. More than any other political show on television, Alpha House makes constant winks to real-life politics. So, this is confirmation that Elizabeth Warren will not be running for president, right??This wouldn’t be the first time, either, »
