The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations are Here

17 December 2009 7:15 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.

First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.

The other nominations causing me to scratch my head »

Diamond of Hollywood

7 December 2009 2:46 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Precious, the story of an obese and abused black teenager, is the year's most reviled as well as praised film in America. But director Lee Daniels is used to trouble, he tells Gaby Wood. He grew up gay on the streets of Philadelphia, after all, and is drawn to the most disturbing truths. That'll be why he's heading to America's Deep South for his next film…

For the past month, one particular actress has filled American movie screens and visited American minds. She is obese and very dark-skinned, and the character she plays – a 16-year-old illiterate girl from Harlem who is abused by her mother and pregnant by her father for the second time – has been dealt one of the worst hands society has to offer. Yet what's most often said about Gabourey Sidibe – in this Aniston-adoring, holiday-spirited culture – is none of those things. It's that she is completely wonderful, »

Armored Movie Review

4 December 2009 4:38 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Nimrod Antal’s Armored feels like a film from a different time; specifically, an action thriller from the late 1990s. It’s the kind of second tier B movie that might have starred Cuba Gooding Jr. in the lead, Michael Keaton in the Dillon role, and Laurence Fishburne in the same role he’s got here.  Due to the shrieking chaos of most modern action films, this fact actually proves to be a good thing.

Under the skilled direction of Antal, Armored trades up shaky cam and overcooked editing for expertly shot and nerve-jangling chase sequences that feel inspired by 1970’s crime thrillers. The second string cast, including Dillon, Fishburn, Ulrich and the always dependable Ward, all deliver down-to-earth performances that fit the characters.

Unfortunately, a predictable plot rife with holes and inconsistencies and a script banged together from old heist clichés shoots the movie in the foot before it »

November 25: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

25 November 2009 3:33 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this long holiday weekend, but you won’t be able to move off the sofa after all that turkey, plus: football! But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Old Dogs this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched a bunch of other dads-suck movies that came before.” Instead Of: Old Dogs, in which John Travolta and Robin Williams get unexpectedly saddled with seven-year-old twins and go on to demonstrate what awful parental figures they are... Watch: Wild Hogs (2007), in which a bunch of suburban dads escape their terrible lives of 5,000-square-foot McMansions and mass consumerism by riding off into a motorcycle sitcom; Dogs seems keyed to appeal to the same audience, down to same star (Travolta) and »

The show only ran for 12 episodes, but every single one of them is hysterical, and many are funny enough to bring tears to your eyes (that’s not PR, that’s my opinion). Fawlty Towers also starred Prunella Scales, Connie Both and Andrew Sachs.

Well it’s the 30th anniversary of the show and the episodes are being re-released in a special edition, remastered DVD set – and we have four (4) copies to give away!

Precious – Based On The Novel “Push” By Sapphire Review

5 November 2009 7:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In the movie “Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire”, an obese black girl growing up in 80s Harlem is beaten and verbally abused by her selfish mother.  The girl is pregnant with her second child after being raped again by her father.  Still hopeful for a better life, the girl enrolls in a program that teaches wayward young women to get their G.E.D.  Through the help of a saintly teacher and the support of her classmates, the girl finds confidence and love.  The movie co-stars comedienne Mo’Nique, pop sensation Mariah Carey, and cross-genre musician Lenny Kravitz.

“Precious” is not a Hallmark movie.  It is one of the best films of the year.

From the synopsis above, it would be reasonable to assume that “Precious” is nothing but the most trite, mawkish, and manipulative of movies.  However, director Lee Daniels manages to dodge every trap and »

In Desperate Need of More Cuba? Wrong Turn At Tahoe Can Help.

3 November 2009 9:28 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Forget what you may have heard to the contrary — Cuba Gooding, Jr. is the hardest working man in show business. Well, he’s the hardest working man in direct-to-video cinema, anyway. If his seriously dodgy Val Kilmer co-op “Hard Wired” wasn’t enough to satisfy your unnatural craving for Cuba’s patented brand of second-tier action, you’ll only have to wait a few weeks to enjoy Franck Khalfoun’s “Wrong Turn at Tahoe,” which co-stars Harvey Keitel and Miguel Ferrer. If this release doesn’t cement the man’s place at the top of the Stv pile, I don’t know what will. After all, when you’re releasing more movies per year than the likes of Steven Seagal and Val Kilmer, that has to account for something, right? Here’s the lowdown on the plot: Love. Honor. Power. Fear of death… People live for all kinds of reasons. »
