From action figures to trading cards to board games, some film favorites are rooted in the spirit of play. Much like the toys at the center of the upcoming “Max Steel,” about the team-up between teenager Max McGrath and his alien friend, Steel, these stories have come to the big screen in a big way. Starring Ben Winchell, Andy Garcia, Josh Brener, and Maria Bello, “Max Steel” is set to be released Aug. 28, just months before the anticipated production based on the TV show and Hasbro toys “Jem and the Holograms,” out October 2015. To celebrate, we’ve rounded up five films originally born from the imaginations of toy designers! “Transformers”The first of the live-action films based on the ’80s-era Hasbro robot toys debuted in 2007. It was the year that pushed Shia Labeouf out of the Mickey Mouse wheelhouse and into the series that would solidify Michael Bay’s status »

Locarno: ‘Tikkun,’ ‘Schneider,’ ‘Wonderland’ Make Running in Fest Biz (Exclusive)

12 August 2015 12:33 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Locarno – “Tikkun,” “Schneider vs. Bax,” “Wonderful” lead early business announcements at an ever busier Locarno Fest Industry Days, now packed with a full roster of events, where Philippe Le Guay’s “Floride” and Catherine Corsini’s “Summertime” both gleaned positive reviews, boding well for sales off what one sales agent called the “Locarno-Toronto express.”

Energized by a rising presence of Hollywood stars – Edward Norton, Andy Garcia and Amy Schumer, in town to tubthump “Trainwreck” – Locarno’s industry presence shows no signs of curbing growth hitting 1,200 attendees for its Aug. 8-10 Industry Days, 14% up on 2014.

In a banner industry deal at Switzerland’s Locarno Festival, L.A-based Bleiberg Entertainment will represent U.S. and world sales rights on “Tikkun,” from Israel’s Avishai Sivan, one of the outstanding titles – it swept top honors at July’s ever-more relevant Jerusalem Fest – to hit Locarno without an international sales agent.

'Ghostbusters' Reboot to Feature This Heavy Metal Legend?

10 August 2015 2:51 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Production on Sony Pictures' Ghostbusters reboot is still under way in Boston, and according to a new report from the Boston Herald, the highly-anticipated reboot may have added a high-profile new cast member for a cameo role. Director Paul Feig has reportedly brought on heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne for scenes involving a rock concert. Paul Feig has been posting photos from the set ever since production started earlier this summer, but he has yet to confirm Ozzy Osbourne's presence quite yet.

The scenes in question were shot at Boston's Citi Wang Theater, which is actually just across the street from the Boston hospital that stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon visited in costume last week. The theater was transformed into the Stonebrook Theatre for an event dubbed "Rock Revenge Fest featuring Ozzy Osbourne," which was part of a "12 Hour Marathon of Metal." The Boston »

Ozzy Osbourne may make a cameo in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot

10 August 2015 6:44 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne may be joining Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd on a list of performers set to make a cameo in next year’s Ghostbusters reboot.

According to the Boston Herald, director Paul Feig was shooting a concert scene in Boston, Massachusetts at the Citi Wang Theatre, and Osbourne headlined the heavy metal concert in the scene.

Outside the theatre, which was renamed the Stonebrook Theatre for the shoot, posters were reportedly hung up promoting a “Rock Revenge Fest Featuring Ozzy Osbourne” for a “12 Hour Marathon of Metal.”

Billboard also reported that a casting call was released for the scene, asking for people to play audience members at a “heavy metal concert.”

It’s entirely possible that the concert is a set piece for a giant ghost attack in Ghostbusters, but for now it’s unknown how it will fit into the film’s plot.

Bill Murray films his cameo for the Ghostbusters reboot

9 August 2015 11:51 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

It seems that Paul Feig‘s Ghostbusters reboot is getting better by the day – and we haven’t seen an ounce of footage yet. After Dan Aykroyd filmed his cameo for the movie, we have now learned via Heat Vision that the legendary Bill Murray has also filmed a spot in the movie.

It seems that Murray was spotted on his way to set in Boston over the weekend. Bmd are reporting that Murray will play a professional supernatural debunker named Martin Heis, though this isn’t confirmed by any official source as yet.

The new Ghostbusters, an all-female troupe, are played by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

Chris Hemsworth, Michael Kenneth Williams, Andy Garcia, Cecily Strong, Matt Walsh, Nate Corddry and Neil Casey also appear in the film.

Ghostbusters will be released next summer (July 22nd).

Bill Murray 'Ghostbusters' Cameo Confirmed

9 August 2015 11:50 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

For several years, while Sony was developing their Ghostbusters reboot, it was believed that original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray would not appear in the movie. It appears that all has changed, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that Bill Murray has arrived in Boston to shoot a cameo in the reboot. No details about his appearance were given, and it isn't known if he will portray Peter Venkman or a completely different character.

Last month, we reported that another original Ghostbusters star, Dan Aykroyd, will cameo as a New York City taxi driver, who picks up Kristen Wiig's character, Erin Gilbert. The scene reportedly features Dan Aykroyd saying the classic line "I ain't afraid of no ghost," with Gilbert replying, "That's a double negative! That means you are afraid of ghosts!" Since Dan Aykroyd isn't playing Ray Stantz, it seems unlikely that Bill Murray will portray Peter Venkman.

Murray Films "Ghostbusters" Reboot Cameo?

9 August 2015 9:25 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Though it's a full reboot with no inclusion of the previous two film's continuity, Paul Feig's upcoming female-centric re-invention of the "Ghostbusters" franchise will include some familiar faces in bit parts.

Dan Aykroyd has already revealed he'll have a cameo, and now it seems Bill Murray could well be showing up to join his "St. Vincent" co-star Melissa McCarthy on the film.

Murray was seen walking to the set recently, and Heat Vision is claiming he will make an on-screen appearance. No word as yet whether the last of the surviving main Ghostbusters, Ernie Hudson, will also pop up.

Bmd adds that Murray will play a professional supernatural debunker named Martin Heis. Chris Hemsworth, Michael Kenneth Williams, Andy Garcia, Cecily Strong, Matt Walsh, Nate Corddry and Neil Casey also star in the film which opens July next year. »

Bill Murray in Paul Feig's Ghostbusters Updated

9 August 2015 6:18 AM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Take this for what it's worth. Bill Murray turned up in Boston and seemingly made his way to the set of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters. If true, Murray will be joining Dan Aykroyd who also makes an appearance in the movie as a cab driver. Whether or not he's going down a similar path and just doing a small cameo and not playing his original character of Peter Venkman, remains to be seen. Or maybe he's just delivering a pep talk and a cushion. Feig's Ghostbusters movie hits cinema screens next July and stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, Andy Garcia and Chris Hemsworth. Updated - The Hollywood Reporter is now confirming that Murray will indeed be in the movie. His role however, is still unknown at this point. »

Bill Murray to make a cameo appearance in Paul Feig’s female-led Ghostbusters reboot

9 August 2015 4:32 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Update: The story has now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter…

Whether you like it or not Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot is definitely happening and is deep into production as you read this. The Bridesmaids director has been vocal about the criticism towards his new approach and in the past month or so he’s been revealing images from the set on his official Twitter account.

Last month we got confirmation that Dan Aykroyd had already filmed a small cameo appearance alongside leading lady Kristen Wiig and now it looks like another original might be returning to make an appearance.

According to SuperheroHype, Murray – who starred as Dr. Peter Venkman in the 1984 original and the 1989 sequel – was spotted heading to the set yesterday morning after arriving in Boston on the 6th. While there has been no confirmation on the images, the chance that Murray could appear doesn’t seem »

The discreet charm of Andy Garcia by Richard Mowe

Andy Garcia - recipient of the Leopard Club Award at the Locarno Film Festival: "I have taken my shirt off once or twice. But not to take anything else off is a matter of policy.” Photo: Locarno Film Festival

Andy Garcia, even while perspiring and mopping his brow, has a certain blasé charm - and a fabled electric smile. It’s all in the genes of his coveted Cuban roots. Once dubbed “the next Al Pacino,” now he’s content to be Andy Garcia, a family man who's happy to work in both studio films and independent titles. Garcia, 58, has a reputation as a smart dresser, mainly Armani, and keeps suits from his movie roles. He appears for his encounter at the Locarno Film Festival in a dark blue suit, shiny black shoes and jazzy socks - despite the sweltering temperatures - and for most of the time lurks behind dark glasses. »

Locarno: Andy Garcia on Hemingway, Family, Directing and Cuba

8 August 2015 3:20 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Locarno –What should be the policy of Switzerland towards Cuba now that the political situation in Cuba has turned? a Swiss journalist asked Andy Garcia at the beginning of a journalists’ group interview in Locarno, where Garcia received the Leopard Club Award Friday night.

That got Andy Garcia going. “The political situation is Cuba has not turned,” Andy Garcia said politely, but very adamantly. “There is one government, a dictatorship. The Castros are still in power. There’s never been a popular election in Cuba. Nothing will change in Cuba until the Castro regime leaves and the people are free.”

And Garcia expanded on the state of Cuba for another full minute. Later on at the presser, at the stately Orsalina Hotel, high above a crustal blue Lake Maggiore in the Swiss Alps, Garcia, more relaxed, ironized that whenever he gave an interview, whatever he spoke about, the only headlines would be about Cuba. »

Sneak Peek images from the upcoming "Max Steel" feature film, based on the Mattel action figure line, directed by Stewart Hendler, starring Ben Winchell, Maria Bello, Andy Garcia and Mike Doyle, opening August 18, 2015:

"It’s very much designed to be grounded within the teen experience," said Hendler about the new film:

"'Max Steel' is an origin story following  'Max McGrath' who suddenly begins generating massive energy bursts from his body. Max meets a 'techno-organic' alien named 'Steel' and the two form a symbiotic bond that keeps their individual energies under control..."

"Neither of them can live without the other," said Hendler, "and they drive each other crazy. But when they work together, they can actually be something cool..."

Created internally by Mattel, the "Max Steel" franchise spans multi-platform entertainment, toys and consumer products.

The Max Steel line of action figures produced by Mattel initially sought to emulate Hasbro's original 12-inch 'G. »

Locarno Powers Up Industry, Global Attendance

5 August 2015 12:10 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Locarno – Digital; the world cinema revolution. Forging a new global movie landscape, these paradigms look set to pump up attendance and drive discussions at Switzerland’s 68th Locarno Fest’s Industry Days.

Three days out from the world premiere of Meryl Streep-starrer “Ricki and the Flash” (above) which opens the 68th Locarno Fest Wednesday night, 1,142 industry pros had signed up for this year’s Industry Day, which run Aug. 8-10. That’s 9% up on the last year’s final delegate total, and 26% higher 2013’s final count.

Put these attendance hikes down to several factors. Film fests’ functions have evolved dramatically this decade, in synch with industry needs. There are few better cases in point than Locarno. Nadia Dresti, Locarno’s head of international, originally launched its Industry Days in 2010 to allow producers and sales agents to screen all the films in Locarno’s major sections over just three days. »
