Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

Best of the Decade #14: Zodiac (2007)

10 December 2009 6:23 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

David Fincher's true crime masterpiece about a serial killer that terrorized Northern California throughout the late 60's and early 70's may very well be one of the best police procedural dramas of all time. Film Junk's Best of the Decade #14: Zodiac. Starring an incredible ensemble cast of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Jake Gyllenhaal and Chloe Sevigny, Fincher puts forth a film of immaculate detail and an endless investigation that became an obsession of many of San Francisco's media and law enforcement members. At a running time of almost three hours, Zodiac follows the steps of the reporters and beat cops through the investigative process. They try to figure out the randomness of the murders and why the killer sent confessions and cryptic clues to the newspapers. As the killer collects more victims, James Vanderbilt's screenplay becomes that much more riveting. Fincher films some death »

NBC to Pollute Programming with Campaign-Convenient Truths

11 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Because stern confessionals from Anthony Edwards and a sky-soaring "The More You Know" graphic are not in vogue anymore, NBC will try a new strategy with its upcoming pro-environmental service announcements. Instead of just airing as commercials, NBC's environmental campaign will overhaul new episodes of 30 Rock, The Office, The Biggest Loser, Heroes, and Community. Jack Donaghy, Michael Scott, and Jillian Michaels will acknowledge their carbon footprint, and then shout at it like the do-nothing underling it is. Preview of the proceedings after the jump. »

Caught Caring: Anthony Edwards and Shoe4Africa

5 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

Motherhood star Anthony Edwards is no stranger to marathons, having run the Chicago 26.2-miler three times since 1999. On Sunday he completed in his first New York City marathon, however, and crossing the finish line was momentous in more ways than one. Not only was it his first race in six years, the 47-year-old former ER actor and dad-of-four raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Shoe4Africa along the way — money that is earmarked for a pediatric teaching hospital in Kenya.

Alanis Morrissette, former ER doc Anthony Edwards, The Incredible Hulk's Edward Norton and Christopher Reeve's son Matthew battled through the sweat and determination on the streets of the Big Apple, all for a good cause. "It was such a thrill but I'm burnt," Edwards told People moments after crossing the finish line. "I'm totally tired! But that's the point. I'm just so happy that I finished. Motherhood (the Movie)

26 October 2009 10:59 AM, PDT | Momlogic | See recent Momlogic news »

Marilyn Kentz: I have four kids, so I figured I knew a little about the lifestyle portrayed in the latest Uma Thurman movie, "Motherhood." In it, she plays Eliza, a stressed out mom with two cute kids and a clueless husband.

In what I perceived to be the longest-ass day in history, Eliza takes care of dog maintenance, endures car harassment, takes her youngest to The Park of Irritating Moms, shops in a version of Loehmann's, rides her bike, blogs, enters a writing contest, gets critiqued and then does a rewrite, shops in a party store, argues with just about every belligerent New Yorker she comes in contact with, charms the few nice ones, decorates her apartment in pink streamers and balloons, redecorates a cake, dances with a messenger, runs away, and throws a birthday party for her six-year-old.

My mommy instincts were assaulted because Eliza seems to have none. »

Uma Thurman on 'Motherhood'

22 October 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | Momlogic | See recent Momlogic news »

When asked if she reads any mommy blogs -- like, for instance, this very site -- Uma Thurman says, "I feel a little guilty." Here's why.

Single Mom Seeking: Although Thurman plays a mommy blogger in the new film "Motherhood," she explains: "I didn't get a chance to get into the blogging world -- and I feel so badly telling you that. I apologize."

Thurman -- who received an Academy Award nomination for "Pulp Fiction" -- plays Eliza Welch, a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger with her own site, "The Bjorn Identity."

Eliza's dilemma might hit home for many of you: She has put her writing aspirations on hold to raise her two children.

In the meantime, her good-natured but absent-minded husband (played by Anthony Edwards, best known for his character Dr. Mark Greene on "ER") seems tuned out to his wife's conflicts, not to mention basic domestic reality. Her best friend »
