Pierce Brosnan Moves From Spy to Detective in Psychological Thriller ‘Spinning Man’

17 May 2017 1:15 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“I would say it’s Hitchcockian.”

That’s how Pierce Brosnan describes his latest film, “Spinning Man,” a dark psychological mystery written by Matthew Aldrich and directed by Simon Kaijser. Film Bridge is bringing the film to Cannes.

“In Simon’s hands, it has a spellbinding, bleak menace to it,” says Brosnan.

Based on a novel by George Harrar, “Spinning Man” stars Guy Pearce as a happily married professor whose life unravels when he’s implicated in the murder of one of his students. Minnie Driver co-stars as his wife, who begins to doubt his innocence.

“This is such a character study,” says Brosnan. “Especially in its depiction of the disintegration of a marriage.”

Brosnan plays Malloy, a tenacious Irish police detective in charge of the murder investigation.

“Malloy is a seasoned detective,” says Brosnan. “He’s a weary man who looks for proof, slowly and methodically. Yet he’s also a man with compassion, »

Why ‘Speechless’ Creator Didn’t Set Out to Depict Disability ‘Writ Large’

10 May 2017 11:09 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Dimeo family looked particularly well put together as they prepare to walk the Paley Center for Media purple carpet. It was a Tuesday night in Beverly Hills, and the cast and crew of “Speechless” were celebrating the penultimate episode of their debut season with a screening and subsequent panel, moderated by Variety‘s own Debra Birnbaum.

While fans of the freshest face on ABC’s Wednesday night comedy lineup were already well aware of the chemistry between stars Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Micah Fowler, Mason Cook, Kyla Kenedy and Cedric Yarbrough — that’s Cee-drik, not Ceh-drik — seeing them interact in person was certainly something to write home about. The cast is already operating as a unit, said series creator Scott Silveri.

“They’re not dysfunctional … ” Silveri began, only to have Driver finish his sentence. “… the family works perfectly,” she asserted. This familial-level of banter persisted through the entire panel, which »

Heal the Living review – heart-rending tale of organ donation

26 April 2017 2:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Katell Quillévéré’s polished mosaic of interconnected lives is intelligently acted and visually arresting but its cardiac-transplant storyline is a little glib

Katell Quillévéré’s first two pictures, Love Like Poison and Suzanne, established her as a film-maker of delicacy and grace; this third feature is based on the novel by Maylis de Kerangal, adapted by the director with veteran screenwriter Gilles Taurand.

It is every bit as beautifully made and intelligently acted as you might expect, with some wonderful visual imagery at the very beginning. Yet I was disappointed. The organ donation storyline is a readymade trope, bringing together disparate life stories; it creates its own internal narrative economy of donor and recipient. But it’s a rather Hollywoodised high concept, reminiscent of Alejandro González Iñárittu’s 21 Grams or even, frankly, a slushy romantic weepie from 2000 starring Minnie Driver called Return to Me. Those films had the idea of infringing the donor anonymity rules, »
