Beyond the Lights movie review: blitz the glitz

15 hours ago | | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Smart and passionate, this is one of the ultimate Hollywood fantasies: an adult romance performed by gorgeous actors with palpable onscreen chemistry. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

It is a sign of how broken Hollywood is that the smart, stylish and passionate Beyond the Lights didn’t get the studio support it needed to make the kind of splash it deserved at the U.S. box office last fall. It didn’t open very wide, and it disappeared from screens almost instantly afterward. There is no excuse for this.

This is mainstream filmmaking at its very best. This is a believable romance between adult characters played by gorgeous actors with palpable onscreen chemistry. This is one of the ultimate Hollywood fantasies. This is a movie about the entertainment industry — specifically, »

This is the kind old school, tempered, meaningful adult love story that people complain Hollywood doesn't make any more. It's about a rising hip hop star (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who is being ground down by her exploitative industry and the Boy Scout of a cop (Nate Parker) who happens to save her life one day. Their relationship plays out in unsurprising ways, but what makes Beyond the Lights stand...

What's New on TV, Netflix Streaming, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: February 23 - March 1

23 February 2015 5:50 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"Beyond the Lights"

Writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood's triumphant return is a labor of love worth your love. This romantic drama stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Noni, a self-destructive pop singer who's tired of the limelight and all it entails. An off-duty cop named Kaz (Nate Parker) steps in to save Noni from making a terrible decision, and naturally, they fall for each other hard and fast. Mbatha-Raw and Parker have great chemistry. Plus, Minnie Driver is excellent as Noni's stage mom.

"Watership Down"

Martin Rosen's emotionally devastating animated film, based on the novel by Richard Adams, has gotten a spiffy Criterion restoration. There aren't a ton of bells and whistles on this Blu-ray, but those little bunnies have never looked so good. »

Doc Nominee Rory Kennedy Celebrates at Chateau Marmont

20 February 2015 7:02 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Oscar week festivities made room for the serious on Friday as docu filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Oscar-nommed for “Last Days in Vietnam,” was celebrated at Dom Perignon’s fourth annual Academy Awards luncheon.

A mix of industryites (“American Experience’s” executive producer Mark Samels; producer Ron Yerxa; thesps Minnie Driver, Peter Fonda, Julian Sands and Cheryl Hines), fashionistas (Valentino’s Carlos Souza, Nicky Hilton) and friends of the producer-director (including “Still Alice’s” executive producer and Kennedy first cousin Maria Shriver) joined Kennedy at the Chateau Marmont for a flower-filled and bubbly-fueled luncheon on the hotel’s scenic garden terrace.

Hotelier Andre Balazs was the host along with executives from the French champagne house. First-time nominee Kennedy found that documentaries and champagne “go very well together, as it turns out.” Notably, the documentary feature category (unlike the director category) includes two women director nominees — Kennedy as well as “Citizen Four’s” Laura Poitras. »

Billed as Friday the 13th meets Glee, Stage Fright is a new take on the classic slasher formula which sees Kylie Swanson (Driver) brutally murdered after her star-making performance in the Broadway-bound musical ‘The Haunting of the Opera’. Ten years later, her producer Roger McCall (Loaf) is running a musical theatre summer camp where Kylie’s twins, Camilla and Buddy help out. When Roger decides to revive ‘The Haunting of the Opera’ kabuki-style for the end of term entertainment, Camilla wants her mother’s cursed role. But the masked Opera Ghost returns with rehearsals ready to break a leg and strike down the cast and its leading lady again…

DVD Review: 'Stage Fright'

27 January 2015 12:56 AM, PST | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★★☆ There's an eerily effective collision of genres happening in Stage Fright (2014). Horror, comedy and musical are all at play and, under the masterful hand of writer and director Jerome Sable, make for deliciously gory fun. While it hearkens back to the canon of 1980s "summer camp slasher" films , there's a refreshing tongue-in-cheek comedic tone here. Viewers can get the all-knowing wink as well as some guts on the side. Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) is having a rough time: ten years ago, her mother, Broadway diva Kylie Swanson (Minnie Driver), was murdered. This unexpected death leaves Camilla and her brother Buddy (Douglas Smith) in the care of their mother's manager, Roger McCall (Meat Loaf).

We—like most of Hollywood—are over extreme nail art. But in Minnie Driver's case we're about to make an exception. Because the Behind the Lights star just posted what could easily be the manicure of the year. Yesterday, the actress shared a close-up of her four-finger tribute to…Sade! Yes, itty bitty photos of the queen of cool and singer of "By Your Side," "No Ordinary Love," and "Kiss of Life" adorned Driver's digits. The image used for the nail decals was from a shoot with photographer David Montgomery in 1980. In it, the crooner rocks a denim shirt, gold hoop earrings, red lipstick and an over-the-shoulder braid—Aka classic Sade style.  "#Tbt »

NBC Cuts Down About a Boy Second Season Order

7 January 2015 3:24 PM, PST | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

NBC’s love of Minnie Driver’s About a Boy is going down hill. The series that follows a story of a boy who befriends a male neighbor who teaches him the way. Now it seems that the second season is not performing as good as they hoped. It was originally ordered a 22 episode count, which is now shaved down to 20. Yes, it is a small decline that could be hinting at trouble in their paradise. So far no one from the show has responded to the bad news yet.

I am sad about this news. This show is a unique one that has painted a very interesting story. However, NBC may not be the network with their best bet of being a strong hold for fans. I am thinking that it would be a better niche based show that Netflix or Hulu could save with success since it would »

About a Boy: NBC Cuts Second Season Episodes

7 January 2015 12:11 PM, PST | | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

The peacock network doesn't want quite as much of About a Boy. Deadline is reporting that NBC has trimmed the sitcom's second season from 22 to 20 episodes.

About a Boy revolves around San Francisco songwriter Will Freeman (David Walton) who had a big hit. It set him up for life financially -- and gave him a lot of freedom and free time. His world is turned upside down when a charming boy named Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) and single mom named Fiona (Minnie Driver) move in next door.

About a Boy has been really struggling this season and it seems very likely to be cancelled by spring. It's currently averaging a 1.2 in the 18-49 demographic with 4.15 million viewers. That's down 36-40% when compared to last year's figures.

The 17 Most Underrated Movies of 2014

31 December 2014 5:42 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

One of the most disappointing realities about 2014 was that as box office shrank compared to last year, independent films were often hit the hardest. Despite stellar reviews, even festival darlings like “Whiplash,” “Foxcatcher,” “The Skeleton Twins” and “Dear White People” each grossed less than $10 million domestically. Here are the 17 most underrated movies of 2014 that deserve a second look in the opinion of Variety’s film critics and reporters.

1. “Enemy

Jake Gyllenhaal’s biggest, most buzzed-about performance of 2014 may have been in “Nightcrawler,” but his best work could be found in “Prisoners” director Denis Villeneuve’s existential thriller about a mild-mannerded Toronto history professor who discovers he has a doppelganger in the form of a bad-boy bit-part movie actor. Virtually a solo — make that dual — performance piece, with Gyllenhaal playing most of his scenes opposite himself (and, in one case, a giant tarantula), this freewheeling mash-up of Davids Cronenberg and Lynch »
