Rian Johnson compares Star Wars: The Last Jedi to the Original Trilogy

19 July 2017 10:35 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While J.J. AbramsStar Wars: The Force Awakens was an enormous success at the box office, one of the biggest criticisms aimed at the film was that it adhered to closely to the plot of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. And, with December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi said to be taking the characters down a darker route – as well as reportedly revealing “The Most Shocking Truth In Star Wars History” – there has been some concern that the next movie will attempt to be the Empire Strikes Back of the Sequel Trilogy.

The Empire comparison is one that isn’t lost on director Rian Johnson, and speaking to Fandango, the filmmaker has acknowledged that there are some similarities, although he also compares the tone to that of The Force Awakens and Return of the Jedi:

“The temptation is to say, well it’s a middle chapter, »

"Twin Peaks," Episode 10 Recap: True Men

18 July 2017 2:15 PM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's worth quoting the latest (perhaps the last?) gnomic pronouncements from Margaret "The Log Lady" Lanterman (the late Catherine E. Coulson), speaking via phone to Deputy Sheriff Tommy "Hawk" Hill (Michael Horse), in full:  "Hawk—electricity is humming. You hear it in the mountains and rivers. You see it dance among the seas and stars. And glowing around the moon. But in these days, the glow is dying. What will be in the darkness that remains? The Truman brothers are both true men. They are your brothers. And the others, the good ones, who have been with you. Now the circle is almost complete. Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not. »

‘Twin Peaks 3×10′ Review

18 July 2017 4:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

If you are a fan of Twin Peaks you’ll no doubt have already thanked David Lynch and Mark Frost in your head for bringing us season 3. At episode 10 we are now officially down the rabbit hole, but if you were looking for much progress in the main story you won’t get it here. What you do get is plenty of information that further strengthens this new world of Twin Peaks.

The key to this episode is characters, and what they are doing in this episode. Dougie (Kyle MacLachlan) is living life with Janey-e (Naomi Watts) who has found a new-found attraction to her slimmed down husband. Richard Horne (Eamon Farren) is further cementing how evil he is by terrorising his grandmother, and Gordon Cole (David Lynch) confirms something to himself about Diane (Laura Dern).

While it may feel like not a lot happens in this episode of Twin Peaks, »

Another D23, a massive Disney fan event, is now behind us. Over the weekend, the Anaheim convention centre was transformed into the ultimate Disney fan HQ with autograph signings by stars, fan photo ops, and all kinds of exclusive merch. It also turns into the hub of entertainment news, with 3 days of big, star-filled panels. While that was happening, I was busy covering the red carpet behind the stage, talking with all the filmmakers and stars, while a crowd of thousands of fans erupted at the big announcements being made on the other side of the wall. Rian Johnson says Luke and Rey are “the beating heart” of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

17 July 2017 4:15 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Following the Star Wars: The Last Jedi panel at D23, during which we got a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel for the hotly-anticipated blockbuster [watch it here], director Rian Johnson is out doing the media rounds, discussing everything from the meaning of the title (once again) to the heart of the blockbuster during an interview with Good Morning America.

According to Johnson, “It’s tough to talk about [the title] without talking about it in the context of the movie. [It doesn’t] necessarily have multiple meanings, but its meaning evolves over the course of the film. It’s tough to talk about without getting into the story, but for me, I guess what it ultimately comes down to is that first question of, ‘What is the deal with Luke Skywalker?’ Luke and Rey are kind of the beating heart of the film, I guess, [as is] their relationship. So The Last Jedi in all the things that it means is tied up in it. »

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson discusses Carrie Fisher’s role

17 July 2017 3:39 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson recently spoke with Good Morning America following the release of a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel for the next entry in the saga at D23 [watch it here], and naturally he was asked about the passing of Carrie Fisher and her role as General Leia in the film.

Speaking delicately on the subject, Johnson said: “Carrie gives a really beautiful performance in the film. We obviously didn’t make the movie to be her final Star Wars movie. Given that though, I think there are scenes that she has that are going to mean a lot to people and there are scenes that we have with her where now not having her around I watch them and I think I’m really thankful that we have that and we can give that to people. So ‘wraps up nicely,’ I don’t know, but it emotionally gives some kind of catharsis I guess, »

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director says Benicio Del Toro isn’t playing Ezra Bridger

17 July 2017 12:57 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Of all the mysterious aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi so far, one of the greatest hotbeds for fan theory and speculation is just who Benicio Del Toro is actually playing. Among the possibilities from fans so far are a Fett, a Sith Lord, a member of the Knights of Ren, and even Ezra Bridger from the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Ezra Bridger sort of walks the line of using his Jedi powers for good, fighting off the temptation to set off on the path of the Dark Side. Although this theory became less plausible once it was announced that the character was referred to as DJ during the production, some fans of the saga still maintained the thought that Del Toro could be Ezra.

Well, during an interview with Good Morning America director Rian Johnson shot down the speculation, saying that »

Exclusive: Mark Hamill & the Cast of 'Star Wars' Remember the 'Irreplaceable' Late Carrie Fisher at D23 Expo

Carrie Fisher's castmates are continuing to honor the late legend.

At the D23 Expo this weekend, Fisher's Star Wars: The Last Jedi co-stars spoke to Et's Cameron Mathison about her enduring legacy and the loss they're still feeling.

Mark Hamill told Et, "It's hard to accept you know? I still think of her in the present tense, you know, she's such an irreplaceable part of that legacy."

"But the films were about triumph and tragedy and unfortunately, real life rammed straight into our fantasy in a way that we never could have imagined," he added. "I think the film has an air of melancholy about it, which it doesn't deserve, but that's life, isn't it?"

Four different actresses just received Emmy nominations for their work on “Big Little Lies.” Not among them, for obvious reasons, is Naomi Watts, who doesn’t actually appear in the acclaimed HBO miniseries — but, according to an extensive new Guardian profile, she almost did.

“We talked about doing that together,” Watts says of her longtime friend Nicole Kidman, who produced and stars in the adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name. “I might have been in it.” Actually in the show are Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Alexander Skarsgård, all of whom are now up for Emmys (as is Kidman). Watts got to star in “Twin Peaks,” though, so who got the last laugh?
