I have long been a fan of the freaky genius that is David Lynch. Even when I have no idea what his movie's about (Mulholland Drive) or think that one is about something, but have no way of corroborating if I'm right (Inland Empire), I love the sheer, unabashed weirdness that pops out of his enormous head.
Now, Mr. Lynch wants to sell me coffee. I guess he's been selling it for five years, but he sent out a Twitter message this morning that it's now for sale through Amazon and at the L.A. book shop, Book Soup. Well, I love coffee! I love coffee even more than I love David Lynch, if that's possible! Unfortunately, though, his "David Lynch Signature Cup Coffee" retails for $16.27 for a 12 oz. canister (or 8 oz. for $11.95). Unless he can assure me that Laura Dern picked the beans with her own hands, and that

Streep at 60: We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competition. Previously 78, 79, 81, 82 and 83, 85, 87 and 88
I believe that Meryl Streep's film career can be divided into five chapters or acts (thus far).
Act I (Liberated Lady) 1977-1981Act II (Chamaeleonidae Erotica) 1981-1988Act III (Funny Lady) 1989-1992Act IV (???) 1993-2001Act V (The Great Entertainer) 2002-presentAfter the High Drama years it came as a shock to many when Meryl was suddenly making comedies. Some felt it was a career crisis and there was some backlash going on. This is possibly hard to comprehend for her new young fans but great success always leads to it and many people were sick of Streep's total dominance as the Eighties wound down. It was somewhat common wisdom at the time that her run at the top was ending, having turned 40 in 1989. Several younger stars were coming into their own

There is something insanely romantic about a movie on a city rooftop. And I’m not just talking taking a hold of your girl’s hand. It’s the night air, the hint nostalgia for drive-in movies, and hopefully stars in the sky as well as the screen.
Here is Portland’s schedule thanks to the Northwest Film Center …
The Northwest Film Center presents: Top Down: Rooftop Films July 16-August 27 This summer the Northwest Film Center’s Top Down rooftop cinema event is back for a fifth season. But before the movie... the tour! It starts in just under three weeks in Denver. I'm not getting paid for this but I'm going to shill because live theater needs to be promoted. It's so much cooler than TV ... even if Corporate America can't profit off of it as much (finite audience = number of seats in house) and thus makes it seem uncool by ignoring it or dismissing it as irrelevant.
Oscar winner Estelle Parsons, 81, headlines the August tour
And given that The Movie -- all caps because if it's any good it'll be Big -- is going to be the subject of much discussion whenever it begins to film and especially once it's in theaters, you'll want to be in the know early on. Even if you're not normally a theater person. If you haven't been following theatrical buzz and awardage these past couple of years, it's

Adam of Club Silencio here with another look at my favorite actresses and their distinguishing claims to fame.
I had a dream. In fact, it was the night I met you. In the dream there was our world, and the world was dark because there weren't any robins... and the robins represented love. And for the longest time there was just this darkness. And all of a sudden, thousands of robins were set free and they flew down and brought this blinding light of love! And it seemed like that love would be the only thing that would make any difference... And it did. So I guess it means there is trouble till the robins come. Martin Luther King Jr. and Laura Dern; civil rights or robins of love. Both valid dreams from inspirational dreamers. Laura Dern is one of our most bright, inspiring and expressive actresses -- an angelic beauty with an edge.

What made you want to be a part of the show?
Mark Feuerstein: Well, first of all, I grew up in New York City, going to first a public school, then a private school, and when I got to the private school in Manhattan, I learned of what we called "The Promised Land," which are the Hamptons. Laura Dern's movie star father Bruce Dern wed his third and current wife, Andrea Beckett, the day after the same Nevada judge married Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould.
The Great Gatsby star surprised his girlfriend with a wintery proposal the morning after completing a marathon in Lake Tahoe in 1969 - and insisted they wed that day, but he had no idea they'd almost be sharing an anniversary with a doomed Hollywood supercouple.
Dern tells WENN, "It was snowing and it was just beautiful and I said, 'You know what, why don't we get married?' Carson City was just down the hill and there's no blood test there - and she's terrified of needles.
"We went to the county court judge, who was out to lunch, so we walked around and I got a leaf from the maple tree in the yard and gave it to her as her bouquet. When he got back he married us and, as we were walking out, he said, 'You know, I married Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould yesterday!'
"We know how well that turned out!"
Dern and his wife will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary later this year; Streisand and Gould's marriage lasted eight years.

During the encore, it was Paul McCartney and John Lennon on the big screen, Bettye Lavette and Sir Paul on the small one. If meditating hippies had megachurches, the services might be something like Saturday night’s star-studded Change Begins Within benefit at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by resolutely weird film director David Lynch. In a world-class feat of celebrity wrangling, Lynch brought ex-Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr together to the same stage for the first time in seven years, but that wasn’t all. The concert/revival meeting also featured Donovan, Sheryl Crow, Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Vedder, Howard Stern, Moby, Laura Dern and Ben Harper, Bettye Lavette, Mike Love, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. I know what you’re thinking: What the … ? Well, it turns out that all these people meditate. And they all seem to like David Lynch. Some of them, maybe all, are

American stage and screenwriter Tom Cole has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 75.
Cole died on 23 February at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut after suffering from multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood, his wife, Joyce Chopra, has confirmed.
Best known for his film and stage writing, it was Cole's 1985 film Smooth Talk that helped launch Academy Award-nominated actress Laura Dern to fame after it became a surprise hit at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film was directed by Chopra, who also produced the television version of Cole's hit play Medal of Honor Rag. Cole's title character in the play was performed Off Broadway by Howard E. Rollins Jr. in 1976, and by rapper Heavy D in a Los Angeles-staged version produced by Will Smith in 2005.
Cole's other stage works include Fighting Bob and About Time, which became a signature performance piece for James Whitmore after he appeared in the original New York production in 1990.
The writer, who earned a master’s degree in Russian at Harvard University, was inspired by his experiences in the Slavic nation as an interpreter for a government-sponsored science exhibition to compose his first book, An End to Chivalry. He later taught Russian and English literature at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
In addition to his wife, Cole is survived by a daughter, Sarah Rose Cole; a brother, Morrill; and a sister, Elizabeth.

Filmmaker David Lynch's upcoming meditation benefit has become a mini-beatles reunion with Ringo Starr joining Sir Paul McCartney for the show.
McCartney and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder were among the first stars to sign up for the Change Begins Within concert at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on 4 April - and now Starr has joined the performers.
It has yet to be seen if Starr and McCartney will play together at the benefit - if so, it will mark their first onstage collaboration since the George Harrison tribute show A Concert For George in 2002.
Sheryl Crow, Moby and Donovan, who heads up the musical wing of the David Lynch Foundation, are among the stars on the bill.
Laura Dern, the star of many Lynch movies, will co-host the event with rap mogul Russell Simmons.
Proceeds from the show will benefit the David Lynch Foundation's efforts to teach one million at-risk children to meditate.

Despite rumors that Graydon Carter was scaling things back for this year's Vanity Fair Oscars party, the soiree was as A-List as ever at its new venue the Sunset Towers. Jennifer Aniston could relax after her presenting duties, and when she and John Mayer hit the party, they couldn't keep their hands off each other. The couple cuddled up every chance they got, and he twittered a sweet message about her. Salma Hayek hugged her friend Penelope Cruz to celebrate her Supporting Actress win. Elsewhere, Jessica Alba and Kate Bosworth caught up with presenter Halle Berry to smile for the cameras, while Jake Gyllenhaal shared a moment with Reese Witherspoon. The fans let loose quite the screams when Kate Winslet, the star of the night, hit the red carpet with her Oscar in hand. The women at the Independent Spirit Awards looked beautiful but kept things more casual with their shorter dresses for the afternoon event. Anne Hathaway shined in her off-white dress with feminine details as many other actresses showed off their flirty styles. Cameron Diaz rocked the stripes, as did Michelle Williams in her sleeveless dress with pockets. Mary-Kate stood out with her shoulder pads and long sleeves and the award-winning Penelope Cruz - who had a run in with ex Tom Cruise the night before - look perfect in a frilly hemmed brown dress. Meanwhile, the men ranged from jeans to suits, but still looked handsome as usual. James Franco didn't manage to shave for the event but wore his pinstripes proudly. Aaron Eckhart, Emile Hirsch and Blair Underwood sported the denim look while Mickey Rourke had fun running around the blue carpet chatting with everyone. Make sure to check out all of Buzz,

5:00 Pm Mickey Rourke (a lot more on him if you scroll down), Kerry Washington, Taraji P Henson, John Malkovich, Darren Aronofsky, Debra Winger, Rosemarie DeWitt... lots of famous faces flashing at us, some of them probably trying desperately not to think about the Oscars tomorrow. Ben Stiller is talking at us to introduce our host Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder, Hamlet 2). Why is it that I think Stiller is so funny when he's playing himself and not so funny in actual movie roles? Jokes about "most of us haven't seen these films"... why do I get so much flak for suggesting Hollywood types don't watch all the nominated movies and yet, they themselves joke about it constantly. (sigh) He's joking about how the Oscars are orgies of backpatting for beautiful people. At the indie spirits they're beautiful on the inside instead. People don't seem to think this joke is funny.
